Going on 10 years with WrestleZone
As we recently learned in the WZ Rock Tournament, the late 80's and early 90s were certainly a breeding ground for a variety of artists, popular in different regions for different reasons. One a few transcended all musical tastes.
Pearl Jam got knocked off earlier than expected in the tournament, though not through the fault of their debut album, Ten.
This August 1991 Debut stands today as one of the most successful albums ever released, and helped drive society further away from glam metal and new wave, and into grunge. When you look at this album closer, it truly launched the phenom known today as "alt rock" into mainstream music.
"Ten" produced 4 singles, but at least 5 hits. Even Flow, Alive, Why Go, Black, and Jeremy still enjoy regular mainstream play, while "Oceans" enjoyed status as a single, and "Once" is still regarded as a top-flight opener.
"Ten" also hit #2 on the Billboard US Charts, and has been named to virtually every list of great rock albums of all time lists. The UK's magazine "Kerrang!" named "Ten" the #11 album on the list of 100 Albums to listen to before you die.
And finally, Pearl Jam's debut went Platinum - 12 times over.
Guns N Roses, on the other hand, survived all the way to their regional final before bowing out to Metallica. 1987's smash "Appetite for Destruction" certainly played a major part.
Whereas "Ten" represented societies move to alt and grunge rock, Appetite represented Glam Rock with a MUCH harder edge. It was LA's Rock Metal Scene, but in your face, along with Motley Crue. GnR succeeded where bands like WASP fell shorts - a razor sharp glam metal act with no apologies.
The track list reads like a Who's Who of 80's and 90's rock anthems. Welcome to the Jungle, Paradise City, My Michelle, Night Train, It's So Easy, Mr. Brownstone, Sweet Child O Mine. Good god, the album was its own greatest hits, in a debut!
The album was #1 on the Billboard 200 charts in the US both in 1988 and 1990. Sweet Child hit #1 on the mainstream Billboard 100 charts. Rolling Stone placed it #61 on its list of 500 Greatest Albums of all time. And the final stat...
Platinum. 15 times over. Only 19 other albums have EVER sold more than Appetite.
In your opinion, which debut was the bigger smash - TEN or APPETITE?
