Best and Worst of Samuel L. Jackson

PS: Can we do a best and worst of Samuel L Jackson someday?
The real challenge here is remembering everything that Samuel L. Jackson's been in. Good luck here, folks.

For best, I'd of course have to go with Jules Winfield in Pulp Fiction; the role is absolutely iconic. It sounds like the easy pick, and maybe it is, but I definitely feel it's the right one. I can't imagine anyone else playing that role, not even Laurence Fishburne.

For worst, I'd have to go with whatever role he played in S.W.A.T., that of the head of the unit who ends up going corrupt or something. The whole movie was dreadful, but I certainly remember his performance for not just being dreadful, but him obviously not giving a fuck how dreadful it was.

It'd have to be Jules from Pulp Fiction. It's so part of his character, he's made some money spoofing it in Boondocks and The Man and a lot of his Nick Fury is basically Jules who grew up a little.

He was amazing in Unbreakable and in Coach Carter he spawned a host of knockoff inner city coaches from Remembering the Titans to that Antonio Banderas movie.

My favourite was him in Black Snake Moan, though.
It could be the blues music, but it was such an open and vulnerable performance, which is something other than the usual "Motherfucker".

If Deadpool ever shows up in a movie alongside Green Lantern, I'd hope they'd let Mr Jackson play John Stewart.

Best: Die Hard With A Vengeance for the hilarious pairing of John McClane and Zeus. The banter between McClane and Zeus is classic. My favourites scene from the movie...

I also loved his portrayal of Shaft.

Worst: I'm not sure. I enjoy Sam Jackson in pretty much anything, he's one of my favourite actors. Maybe The Other Guys since he's only in it for 5 mins or Star Wars. I've never cared for Star Wars and I didn't really care for his character in the film. I don't even remember the name of the character he played.

Jackson has a whole career of shit films that made it to the cinema without considering his side career with films that didn't.

No line ever spoken in a movie struck me with the poignancy and sensitivity of Jackson in 'Jurassic Park' uttering:

"Hold on to your butts" :icon_sad:

Django Unchained was one of those movies I was very nervous about watching. I absolutely love the original spaghetti western Django, and I hate hate haaaaaate remakes. Thankfully; Django Unchained wasn't so much a remake as it was a spiritual sequel to the original (with a Franco Nero cameo).

Sam L's character seemed to be playing the dragon unto the big bad guy of the movie, and then I realized that Sam L's character was in fact the big bad guy of the movie. He practically had the would-be main villain in his back pocket, and was the toughest bad guy to put down. Quentin Tarantino has never used Sam L in a way that I've disapproved of, kudos to him.

On to a remake that reaffirmed my unabashed hatred of remakes; Robocop.

I'm pretty sure that the director of that shitstorm built Sam L's role around an assumption of how easy it would be to cast him if he was used as the most moronic interpretation of how he's often typecast. Sam L played the head/spokesperson of a defense contractor that was an amalgamation of every shitty role he'd ever played because "fuck it, I need the money".

Fuck you Bill, Snakes on a Plane is a masterpiece of modern cinema.

One of my favorite actors, but Samuel L. Jackson has starred in and been apart of so many awful films, so it's hard to remember all of them. The Spirit was terrible, and and I've tried more than once, but I can't sit through Kite or The Samaritan (or Fury).

Lakeview Terrace is one of those tricky choices. The movie had so much potential with one of Jackson's best performances, but LT settles for cheap shock reactions."How dare you fondle each other in front of my kids! Heathens!" Jackson hitting his daughter after Kerry Washington's character teaches her how to dance, or the numerous not so subtle racial jabs from Jackson.

I've always been a fan of The Long Kiss Goodnight, and Def By Temptation is one of my personal guilty pleasure favorites. Def By Temptation is an old Troma release, and it's a really campy and cheesy B-movie horror flick. Jackson plays a minister, but his character only appears in flashbacks and visions for the main character.

Probably Star Wars and The Avengers since Sam. L Jackson doesn't do much drama at all in them.
I'm not much of a Sci Fi/Fantasy fan. Science and History bored me to death at High School and the Movies are generally very long and drawn out and bore me to death, all of those movies feel very generic to me. Only pure Sci Fi film I like is The Matrix, hate lord of the rings and Star Wars is very overrated.

The one where he's the crazy racist cop neighbour is a classic. That's my fave.
