How would you book the unification process if the WWE decided that they only wanted one midcard title? A few ideas came to mind, but one sticks out. Feel free to either criticize it, praise it or add your own idea...
This idea came to me after watching CM Punk and Dolph Ziggler wrestle on Monday Night Raw a few weeks ago. The match was pay-per view quality, and I would really like to see that match at the upcoming Royal Rumble for the WWE Title. I started thinking about how the WWE could be creative in booking the match, and I came up with this:
CM Punk talks a lot about old school pro wrestling. He wants to bring back the ice cream bars. He wants to bring back the Winged-Eagle World Title (I believe he said that to WWE.com a few months ago...) You know what else he should want to do that hasn't been done since the old school days? He should want to hold the World Title and the mid-card title just like The Ultimate Warrior did. (Yes, I know, it was the IC Title, but the US Title works too...)
CM Punk winds up winning the title vs. title match at The Royal Rumble ... a move that gets the belt off Ziggler and allows him to focus solely on the World Title. The next night on Monday Night Raw, John Laurenaitis informs CM Punk that the rigors of being the WWE Champion are too strenuous for him to simultaneously hold the US Title, and that because of that, he is stripping him of the US Title.
Laurenaitis then announces a 16-man tournament for the US Title. Later in the show, Cody Rhodes makes it known that he intends to enter the tournament and unify his IC Title. Laurenaitis allows Rhodes into the tournament on the condition that each of his tournament matches double as US Title matches ... with the belt being able to switch hands via count out or DQ.
Given the 16 man field with three weeks of build between the Royal Rumble and the Elimination Chamber, the WWE could use the first two weeks of Raw/Smackdown! to get it down to the final four. That would mean 4 first-round matches on both Raw and Smackdown! the week after the Rumble followed by 2 second-round matches on Raw and Smackdown! the next week. It would allow a one-week build for the semi-final matches that would take place at Elimination Chamber. The finals would be held 6 weeks later at WrestleMania.
