Austin vs. Goldberg at Wrestlemania XIX?

Wolf Pac

Mid-Card Championship Winner
Looking back, Goldberg had arrived right after WM 19 but what if the WWE had bought Goldberg in before WM 19, do you think we could've seen Goldberg finally take on Austin instead of Rock vs. Austin 3? And had it happened, who could've faced The Rock at WM 19 instead? Or do you think they made the right decision going with Rock vs. Austin 3?

I don’t think Austin vs. Goldberg would have worked at WM19. It may sound petty but it wouldn’t have worked because Austin would have had to lose. Remember WM19 was Austin’s final match. Combine that with the fact that Goldberg was just coming into the company and it’s obvious what the outcome would have been. I don’t mean the obvious outcome would have ruined the match because I don’t think it would have been obvious at the time. I just can’t picture Goldberg beating Austin in the dream match on the WWE’s biggest stage when Goldberg was more or less just a one year guest for WWE. I think that would have left a bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths. If Goldberg were to actually commit to WWE and be a top star for years it would be a different story.

Austin vs. Goldberg wouldnt've gone ahead. Both would refuse to job to the other.

I highly doubt Austin would have refused to lose (not job) to Goldberg. He's friendly with Goldberg and he lost to Rock so I don't think it would have been an issue.

I think it was fine the way it was with Rock vs Austin. Especially with Austin being the flagship of the WWE, I don't think Vince would want him to lose to Goldberg at mania. Plus it was a cool storyline as it was. Austin and Rock have been on and off for four years trying to best each other. Austin had already beat him twice at Mania. Rock beat him fair and square in the center of the ring in an epic match. Goldberg is great for 5-8 minutes, but I don't think they could have pulled out as good a match as Austin/Rock always had

I would love to see Austin vs Goldberg, but Austin would have to win. There is no chance in hell Vince would let his top guy loose to WCW's top guy. That wold be like saying WCW's top guy was superior to WWF's. People may say it is Vince's ego, but in that position, I wouldn't let Austin loose to Goldberg either.

But in saying that, would Goldberg agree to lose to Austin?

This is what I was getting at Brain.

From reports, the guy does have a pretty big ego....

Of course it was the right decision, it was going to be Austins last ever match and putting Rock over was the right way to end his career and finish their epic rivalry. Why on earth would WWE job Austin, their hugest start for the previous 6 years and biggest ever behind Hogan to a guy who was the face of their competitor during that same timeframe?????? I agree Goldberg should have debutted at Wrestlemania 19 , it would have had massive buy rates and whomever he squashed would have got the rub, but they would not have been able to build a fued to it. They should have had a heel like Christian who was not booked on the show do an inring promo whinging about not being on the card and challenge anybody out back to a Wrestlemania moment. Goldbergs music hitting would have blown the roof of of the outdoor stadium.

Give me Rock and Austin any day over Austin v Goldberg. In theory it sounds good, but it was Austins last match (?) and having it with The Rock made sense

Goldberg and Austin would have been a cool match to see, but they made the right choice with The Rock facing Austin again because not only was that a better match in name but also The Rock needed a Wrestlemania victory over Stone Cold. They made the right call here. I would have wanted to see the Goldberg match too though, unfortunately we will never see that. There really isn't anyone else The Rock could have faced that year which would have been a problem. An Austin rematch beats a random feud for The Rock any day.

I would have been happy to see Goldberg v Austin at any PPV really.

However, Mania 19 would not have been the best time for the match to take place. As we know, the match with The Rock was Austin's last match in the WWE and he went out on a classic, which is the way it should be. Rocky and Stone Cold always worked so well together, and had an epic rivalry over the years so it made sense for Austin to finish with The Rock finally getting te WM victory over Austin. It brought thei rivalry to a satisfactory conclusion.

Goldberg v Austin was a match everyone wanted to see, but in his last match with the WWE, there would have been no way that Vince would have let his top guy throughout that era lose to WCW's top guy throughout that era. Not a chance. It would be signifying that WCW was better than the WWE and we know Vince refuses to hint at that in any situation, let alone with his top guy in Austin.

Austin needed to lose at WM19 to bow out on his back, but Goldberg would never have been booked to go over had the match taken place, especially as he was on a 12 month deal. Had Goldberg been signed for longer and was going to be THE GUY after that WM, then maybe. But if the situation had been the same, with Bill on a 12 month deal and Austin leaving, then Stone Cold would have been booked to win.

do you think we could've seen Goldberg finally take on Austin instead of Rock vs. Austin 3?

If I can recall the initial plan for WMXIX was Rock vs. Goldberg, Austin vs. HHH. This is why when Goldberg couldnt make it in time for WMXIX ... they changed it to Rock vs. Austin and Booker T being the #1 in a half-@ssed battle royale for the World Title.

So even if Goldberg decided to sign he probably would have faced The Rock.

And had it happened, who could've faced The Rock at WM 19 instead? Or do you think

If Austin vs. Goldberg did take place, that would have been a hard card to book? Againts HHH ... nope they were both heels, againts HBK ... nope he was locked in a program againts Y2J, Angle ... been there done that.

I guess then I would have done Benoit vs. The Rock ... sure it's not going to match Rock vs. Austin in terms of marquee value but Benoit could have done something better than a tag team match.

they made the right decision going with Rock vs. Austin 3?

I guess so ... it was a very good match and it was a perfect send off for both of their careers.

i personally dont think austins body would be able to hold up with goldberg at the time. we all KNOW goldberg isnt the safest worker lol (i.e. bret harts career) so i think himbworking with rock was the best choice. i never really liked the rock (austin fan for life, ftw!) but i think with him being the safest worker and finally beating stone cold and it being austins last match was perfct

Well as HH recently stated Goldberg as " someone who took himself too seriously" ... so i doubt they would have booked him against austin as he also had history with putting hart out of business...
anyhow.. it surely wouldnt have been another of those come spear jackhammer pin match..
austin definetly would have stunned and beer bashed! and thats the bottomline!
