As far as I know, it's recieved mixed reviews at best. Apparently, while the free running style is revolutionary many other aspects of the game digress rather than evolve. It's being described as disappointing game, but not one that's necessarily bad. I'll be getting soon but after seeing the internet reviews, I'm not nearly as excited as I once was. Still, one to look out for.
As Sam has already said, the game was meant to be revolutionary but instead falls on its face in some parts.
The only really bad thing that reviewers have to say about the game is that it lacks variety further into the game; sure mindless killing, pick pocketing and assassinations are all good fun but when thats all your going to do for the 10 hours of this game your gonna get bored.
Of course I don't think that will be to much of a problem as amazing production values will be more then enough to distract anyone from such short comings.

the game was all hype. The 7/10 ratings it received was being gracious at best, this game deserved a MAX of 5/10. Game is boring, gameplay sucks, storyline is decent at best. You use 1 button to fight, but you have to learn 50 button combo's just to do anything else in the game. I was looking foward to this game so much, but it was a huge dissappointment.
I'm with Brahma on this one. Running around and climbing buildings is fun for a while and graphically the game looks great, but doing the same things 10 different times gets old and boring. I did 2 assassin kills and returned the game ( I rented it). You run or ride your horse a good distance to get to the city and do everything (pick pocket, view points, assassinate, save citizens) all over again. Each "level" is just like the next.
This game shouldn't of gotten more than a 7 on the rating. I probably would of gave it a 6, 5 might be to harsh, but through all the hype it got 5 actually would make sense. Huge disapointment. Easily the most overrated game this year.
assassin's creed is a game made for a wide screen tv or a projector. Play it on a big tv screen if you can, it makes the game so much better. I know that can probably be said for a lot of games, but this game in particular needs to be played on a big screen. It makes the climbing and hay bail crazy jumps much more dramatic and fun.
Creed is much better game then people give it credit for. While it does have plenty of flaws(Bad AI, repeative tasks, sometimes glitchy controls) its still a great game and better then a lot of other games that have came out. On IGN they gave a higher score to Smackdown vs Raw over creed. I will tell you right now that creed is much more innovative then that game.

Agreed. This game is very much underrated. It's innovations - free-running, beautiful environments and an original setting - make up for it's shortcomings - bad AI, easy combat, repetition, a story I'd rather kill myself than have to sit through. It just goes to sure how wrong and shortsighted game reviewers can be. It's some of the most fun I've ever had for a game, if only for throwing beggars into stalls. And, of course, brutally murdering the ones that throw rocks at you after an exhilarating chase.

While its true that the missions do all follow the same formular it is still a very fun game. IMO i would have bought the game just for the free running as its one of the most satisfying things in a game, and as for the the leaps of faith there have been a few times when playing on my 42" HD TV that have given me the feeling of falling which was a surprise!
Its the sort of game you can forgive its bad points because the rest of the game makes up for it: Fantastic graphics, great story, amazing scale for the cities and fun gameplay.
I would give it 9/9.5 out of 10.

Oh God no is this a 9/9.5 out of ten... This is possibly a 5/6 out of ten... Ive never played a hyped up game that had so much repetiveness in it... is repetiveness a word? Not a chance... Seriously it was so hyped up and thats all that it is... Hype is something that might not be that great but everyone is making a big deal out of it... Assassins Creed was hype...

I'll be picking this up tommorow, along with Crackdown. People I know who have played it love it, and I could care less about bad AI. If I'm entertained, I consider it a good purchase. It's got a good used price as well-$26. That's decent for a game that came out recently.
I don't think it's worth buying man, it gets repetitive after a while. The kills are all the same and there's hardly an assassin aspect in most of the assassinations you have to do. Don't get me wrong its an amazing game and addicting, but that's just my opinion man.
Crackdown on the other hand is awesome, so much replay value to that game its inasne. And the way you have to level up your abilities is pretty cool, and once you are leveled up you can do some insane shiz.

From what I saw, it seemed like a pretty awesome game. The fighting system is pretty cool, and kills look awesome. The graphics are nice, and the climbing system and the leaps of faith are cool looking as well. I don't know if I'd buy it, but I'd definitely rent it and beat it.

Well, I didn't end up getting either game. Instead, I was able to get Saint's Row for 20 bucks and Halo 3 from a friend for 25. If I get a chance to go to the bigger mall about 20 minutes away soon, I'm definetely picking up Crackdown or Assassin's Creed. I felt Crackdown was pretty repetitive, basically jump around, kill gang members, kill a "boss", rinse and repeat. I think Assassin's Creed is more interesting, and I could pick up Crackdown anytime due to it's cheapness.

Well, I did end up getting Assassin's Creed over Crackdown, and I'm still patting myself on the back for it. Sure, both games are extremely repetitive, but AC has a story throughout, unlike Crackdown. I've already spoiled myself on what happens, and I'll just say I can't wait for AC2.
EDIT: Oh, and I forgot to mention that they are using a slighty modified AC gameplay engine on the new Prince of Persia game. Sadly, I haven't played any of the other PoP games, but I think I'll give them a rent now. I heard this new one gets rid of the time control factor, which was the main reason they decided to use the AC engine.

TheOneBigWill's 'take' on Assassin's Creed:
While I've owned this game for a while, tonight (Monday) was only the second time I ever sat down and truly attempted playing it. The first time, I spent about 20 minutes and got bored with the very beginning of the story and then quit. This time, I gave it a second chance and truly listened to the story.. then got into some of the opening game-play.
My overall opinion before I bought the game (for $60.00 at that time) was that it was somewhat similar to Fable, in gameplay. It looked like an open world (at least regarding the levels you're on) and it had free range from what I seen to be good or bad. (I'm still unsure if this is an option, since you have the ability to kill "silently" or "ragefully.") I've heard negative things about it, such as the A.I. - I haven't encountered this to say one way or another. So what I have come across so far is this.
Great graphics. The controls are WAY easier than I thought they'd be. The options on what to do and the stealth abilities are completely awesome to me. (hiding in a stack of hay. "Praying" to blend in, or even sitting on a fricken bench. lol As if to say, "don't mind me, I'm the guy that just killed a guard and dispite still wearing the same outfit, since I outran you and you lost sight of me, I can sit on this bench and you won't remember who I am."

I'm unclear what the main portion of the story is yet, except that it revolves around what I assume is modern day scientists trying to uncover a person's passed relation's life and events as an Assassin. You're placed inside a "dream world" in which you take over the role of the person they're trying to see the past to, apparently, and its your job to more or less relive that past and explain the story to them through your images.
Thus far, to end my 'take' on this game. I'm in love with it right now. And because my system went to crap, I won't be capable of playing it for another month or so. Rest assured upon getting my system back, this shall be one of the first games I go to.
