So, I've been sailing the sea of the Internet, drifting through the web islands, and in particular IGN.Com to which I received a free 30 day premium membership today.
What does that have to do with wrestling? The answer is simple: http://tv.ign.com/articles/118/1181516p1.html

If you click the link above, it will lead you to a Wrestling Wrap Up - on a site where there are apparently only 3 wrestling articles (directly related to wrestling, not the SvR games), 2 of the about CM Punk and all of them after june 29th.

This made me wonder - it seems that CM Punk has really elevated wrestling's public image into new hights. Maby not as high as the Attitude Era, but it's certainly climbing up again.

What do you think?

Dude i am a regular visitor of IGN and they have been doing "Wrestling wrap ups" every week for AGES! Now so it has nothing to do with a boom in popularity.

I don't know what else i can say really? Is it growing in popularity??

Wrestling has it's flare ups. Every once in a while -- sadly, it's usually a death or something negative behind the scenes -- big media outlets will give it some coverage. In a week or two, it dies down and then life moves on.

I wish it were true, it just likely isn't. Still, the ratings are about where they've been and that will probably continue.

Wrestling isn't getting anymore popular anytime soon. Its in a down period with no reason to try to improve itself

Wrestling isn't more popular, but it's also not as bad as people think. Looking at ratings only is insanely dumb. More channels, more peripheral outlets to watch wrestling, etc. Wrestling is very popular, when a show is the number 1 show on a network pretty much every week, year-round, it's pretty damn popular. No TV show in the past 10 years, even though this is a "down time" has been as popular as Raw.

I doubt that this is any indication that wrestling is growing in popularity. If anything, wrestling has been decreasing in popularity since the 90's. Wrestling fans werent ashamed to admit that they were fans and wrestling wasnt synonymous with death and steroids.

Wow dude notalgia much? In the 90s wrestling wasn't synonymous with steroids? So I guess everyone just forgot about the 80s and early 90s when Vince was on trial for it. Or when the roster actually was a ton of roiders (today there's like 2 guys who look to be on roids). Stop letting nostalgia get to you. It's the same now as it was pretty much every time before. It's not as popular as it was '98-'01, but it's nowhere near as bad as it was '94-96.

the real reason wrestling gets more gripe with the media is because of the "trash TV" image it had in the late 90s when it was popular. A LOT of people still think wrestling is basically a jerry springer show. Vince is trying to HELP that image with the PG programming everyone on here thinks they hate so much.

I think you're confusing a growth in popularity with mainstream recognition. The WWE is getting more recognition with a storyline than they have in years but that may OR may not lead to a growth in popularity and business. Given how wrestling has had many missteps in the past 6 years with all the deaths and the wellness policy stuff, their business has definitely gone into a "valley". However, the way the WWE made this great CM Punk angle has given them applause from the mainstream media for having an entertaining storyline that mixed fact and fiction together. This mainstream recognition may lead into a growth in business, but if and only if the WWE plays with the storylines on their show correctly and makes it an entertaining product as a whole.

Summary: The business is not necessarily getting more popular, but it was recognized for having something great, and they may do better business with the media watching them, if they play their cards right.
