Angle vs. Wolfe: Too Much Too Early?

The Angle vs. Wolfe match at T.P. for me was a superb bout between two excellent wrestlers. This match had it all near falls, both guys kicking out of finishers, submissions and counter wrestling, hell we even saw Kurt do his famous moonsalt bellyfloop. As good as this match was, my question to you is. do you think they gave us, the audience too much in their first contest and how can they top what they did?

Usually I'd say "yes", but this is a special case. Desmond is a TNA rookie, so there's a ton left for the fans to see. Angle is a veteran, but he's shown in the past that he can just keep going, and pull out something new at any moment.,

For instance, his matches with AJ. They' fought quite a lot, but I'd still say their match a few weeks ago is a candidate for MOTY. He's fought Morgan a few times, and still continues to make the matches better and better. Add in that he's facing someone new to the masses, and it leaves goldmines of potential for the future.

I think it depends on what TNA does as a follow up. As NSL said, the fact that Wolf is very much a newcomer leaves lots of possibilities open. There are a number of great matches that TNA could put them in and all of them can seem completely fresh and every bit as competitive as their first one. I've heard rumors, though I don't know anything for sure, that TNA plans to do a two out of three falls match with Wolf and Angle at the next ppv. According to the rumors, each fall will have to be on a certain way. One fall would have to be won via submission and so on and so forth. If this turns out to be true, then it could be an interesting match

I feel that there is still a long way these guys can go, although I was jacked when Angle won the match considering just how dominant Wolfe had been booked to look up until that point.

But both of these men are tremendous wrestlers and I have good faith that they could pull off 100 great matches together.

If that match had ended in any other way than Wolfe tapping out I would have been very disapointed. As for it being too much too early? I don't think so. if anything, TNA fans who were unfamiliar with Wolfe (Or Nigel) have had their eyes opened to what an amazing talent he is. Kurt does an amazing job week in week out, and the guy apparently wrestled most of the match with an injured back.

I'm excited to see where they take this storyline. I hope they don't end it. I'd like to see a stipulation in their next PPV match. Maybe 2 out of 3 falls Submission match or something along those lines. That would be EPIC!

To me TNA did the same thing with Joe/Angle. I know it was huge with Kurt coming to TNA at the time, but they could've waited a little bit more, and gave Joe some more seasoning.

Kurt Angle is huge star in the worls of pro wrestling, and if Wolfe loses to him again, it's going to kill all that momentum he had coming in. Maybe he would've been better of going against someone like Morgan or Hernandez?

I must say, DM's talent could help pull them up, but only if this program and others draw fan support and interest. If not, then I have a feeling DM won't last very long.

I did not see the match, but I have heard nothing but great things about it. My feelings are this. I like the concept of Desmond going after the top star. Usually the new guy comes in a squashes a bunch of jobbers. He is going after the "Greatest Wrestler in the World" That is the best way to make a name for yourself. Now they scheduled a best 2 of 3 match for the next PPV. After that, they can go with a Iron man match. I think it is a great way to get Desmond immediately in the Main Event. This is the best angle that TNA has started in a while and I don't want to jinx it by over thinking it and just enjoying it for what it is.

That match was AMAZING! And as for anyone doubting Kurt, I feel he just developed a new finisher of sorts. His side-arm-bar-choke was pretty cool. After the match Desmond mouthed/said "I don't know what that was" "What did you just do to me?". Angle is full of surprises. TNA lets these guys WRESTLE. That is what they both do best. Desmond is being built to be HUGE! I hope TNA, or Hogan doesn't change what they're doing with him.

I think it is an excellent way to bring in a new guy and make name for him. What better way could you build a man then going after the best. To me there is only two ways to build a anew star. 1) BE THE BIG MAN THAT ABSOLUTELY DESTROYS THE COMPETITION (BROCK LESNER OR GOLDBERG) 2) OR BE THE NEW GUY THAT GOES RIGHT FOR THE TOP DOG IN THE YARD. That is exactly what TNA did with Wolfe and I thought it was a pretty good move. I like what i have seen out of the guy andi think he has alot of great potential.

TNA does this all the time, instead of thinking logically about the long term drawing power of certain people, they just rush into things that should have months of build up beforehand, they push people too hard, too soon and they have nowhere to go but down, there are many examples of this:

Kurt Angle comes in after being demoted to ECW and ends Samoa Joe's (one of TNA's few homegrown stars) year and a half undefeated streak in his first PPV match, signifying right off the bat that WWE stars are superior to TNA's.

Christian was a career mid-carder and he comes in and wins the World title within 3 months, it makes the company look small time, they should have taken the time to build him up as one of their own first.

Victoria was a jobber for her last 4 years in WWE, she comes in and wins the Womens title within a month.

Wolfe is just the latest example, I mean I've enjoyed his feud with Angle, but where does he go from here? Angle-McGuinness was somewhat of a dream match, why do it at a point when TNA's PPV buyrates are at an all time low? Surely they could have built to this at a later date.

yeh but this is a bit better than the wwe way of making stars - 2 years in ecw squashing nameless jobbers, convincing no-one that they will ever be impressive - see: Archer, Vance and Sheamus. And for those that wanted Wolfe to go over clean, really? So in his first month at a PPV he defeats the greatest wrestler in the world, what next? I liked this, it gave him legitimacy, but didnt blow to early, by being beaten by angle.

The main event tonight was great, and they spent very little time actually in the ring with each other. Angle got to work with Daniels, and Wolfe got to work with AJ.

The promos through the night were great, except for a wolf pun, and give us something to look forward to. I'm hoping we see some semblance of a rematch at Final Resolution, but there's alot going on with Angle and a possible title match.

I normally like feuds to build quite slowly over time.

But, I really like the Angle/McGuinness so far.

I was so impressed with their match at Turning Point.

I hope their next matches in the series are as good, and I hope that this is a long feud that can run and run.

It certainly has masses of potential.

A 2 out of 3 Falls match between these two would be awesome!

Maybe it has been slightly rushed, but even so, it looks to be a great feud...

Here's the thing: Angle put Wolfe over so well in the first month, especially that incredible payoff at the pay per view, that they can have this feud keep going.

That's the basis for a great feud: Nothing gets settled but it is still great to watch. Wolfe has been given the ball and he's ran with it and Angle, to his credit, is pushing as hard as he can to stay ahead.

I could see this turning into a multi-month feud that could eventually include the world championship and I'm 100% in favor it.

Nah. They are both such incredible, athletic, versatile wrestlers. They would have no problem giving the fans something different each and everytime they face off. I loved the matches. It was insane. I'm glad they put Angle in a feud with him. They couldn't have picked a better person. Angle is known in TNA as the best acquisition in their history, why not go after the best? The Godfather, the whatever else he was called. This feud has only just begun! .. I hope.

So I'm sitting at my computer, having luckily tracked down the now legendary Kurt Angle/Desmond Wolfe match in its entirety. Terrific, I think, now I can watch the allegedly superb match between two of my favourite wrestlers despite having missed Turning Point. What ensued was seventeen minutes of moderate disappointment; disappointment so moderate that I wasn't sure whether I was even disappointed until this morning.

I've decided that I am disappointed. Is this the best these two can do together? I hope not. The match had lots of impressive spots and it makes for one impressive highlight video, but it was just lacking a certain... cohesion. Too much too early? Not enough, I'd say.

Interesting question. I'm going to say it's not too much so long as this isn't your typical push. If everyone was being thrown into a feud with one of, if not THE, top guy on their first day in the company, I'd thing they're jumping the gun with some guys who aren't ready. But I like Nigel. He's proven himself to be a great talent, and with an injury prone prospect like him, you might not wanna waste time with a slow build and just jump in with both feet and capitalize on every second he can give the company. It'd blow if he was sidelined before he made anything of himself in TNA and he had to be rebuilt from square one after returning to active competition, but this sorta bypasses that snafu (sp?). Now, the fans are invested in him big time and he's got a pretty safe time. A star is born, and because this type of booking isn't an everyday thing, it seems like a huge deal.

Now if every... Damn, I can't even remember the name of that guy who's with Rhino and 3D. But if every guy like that got the random hot-shot to the main event that Nigel has gotten, I'd be a pretty annoyed. Except not really. I've lost all expectations of TNA in recent years, and a couple good months aren't enough for me to get my hopes up.

Also, I don't think that established guys coming in should get this random hot-shot type of feud. Like when Angle came in, that feud with Joe was a bit of a waste and they blew off the first match too quickly. And then they did the same with the rematches. Guys coming in who are a big deal should get a bit of a slower build before that first big money match and not waste them and burn the fans out. The build shouldn't be Hogan-slow, but you know what I mean.

The Nigel push is for important noobs only.

I think it was a wise move to get McGuinness on the TNA map ! I dont know if its wise to give those two too many more matches after that show, but it got the fans that weren't familiar with McGuinness to see what he can do and know that they've got a real superstar there !

Had they given us Angle v. Wolfe as the main event tonight, I'd have jumped straight on this bandwagon. But, they didn't, and what we got was a few decent short promos.

Angle picked up a quick win, and Wolfe still had a chance to stand tall at the end. This is all building up well, and hopefully we get a decent payoff at Final Resolution.

love the move with Wolfe going right after Angle.. it made him a legitimate character and force in TNA without giving him jobber matches (the way WWE introduces people)..also Angle coming off the MEM character for a year is given a chance to try and turn face which I think has more to do with Hogan coming in than anything else.

I thoroughly enjoyed their first match, I actually personally enjoyed it more than the triple threat, which is strange because I normally prefer the spottier matched much more than psychological matches, but something about this one i loved. I personally rated it 5 stars, but i hope they're given triple the amount of time for Final Resolution for their match, which would make it like three five star matches in one.

What I'd like to see happen, would be Wolfe to win 2-0 in the Final Resolution match. Its not as bad as 2-0 in a Three Stages of Hell match, because the fans won't feel as robbed. Then, Angle could ask for a rubber match, an iron man match- that he wins 1-0. Just 1-0. Then have Angle go after AJ and eventually win the title, after a feud. Then, the night after Angle wins, have Desmonde come out and say something along the lines of-
"Congratulations, Mr. Mangled, on winning the TNA championship. But you and I have a score to settle. You and I need a rubber match."
"What the hell are you talking about Wolfe? I beat you fair and square in the middle of that ring in our Iron Man match!"
"Yes, yes you did. But lets count the decisions we have each. You have submitted me once. You have pinned me once. I have submitted you once, I have pinned you once. So, in my view, we need a rubber match, and we should make it for that title of yours. But instead of just trading wins back and forth forever, lets realy go after that title. Lets have us a ladder match."

Which I believe would have a nice shock factor, and be four great matches for us fans, and a storyline i would enjoy very much.

Couldn't agree more. The feud would have taken a significant turn for the worse had the match been allowed to have been booked as it was established, IMO. But Foley really helped by throwing in that proverbial monkey wrench by booking Angle in a handicapped match against Raven & Stevie Richards, which ultimately helped sustain the momentum for Wolfe by giving him more cheap heat.

I was kind of worried the way Angle was put over Wolfe at Turning Point via the tap-out, because it made Wolfe look weak, but as of right now he's looking much, much stronger.

I personally feel that right now this is becoming too much too soon. A match like the one they are going to have at Final Resolution is more of a match to end a feud. I don't see how these two could possibly continue fueding and top themselves after this match. So right now, I have the feeling this feud is going to end after Final Resolution, and I was not hoping for that at all. I was kind of hoping for this feud to go in February of next year, ending at that pay per view.

Oh well, either way, they've put on an excellent program, and Angle is doing a great job of helping Wolfe get established in TNA. I am definitely looking forward to their match at Final Resolution and I hope Wolfe goes over there as he could really use the win.

I don't think it was too much at all because Wolfe is still new to people like me who are unfamiliar with anything he did before TNA. I would actually say that the exact opposite of this thread's question would be the case instead. The more we can see of what Wolfe is capable of, the more TNA fans he will win over. I've heard a lot about his stuff in ROH, but now he is in a different federation and needs to prove himself to THOSE fans.

Then there's Angle. Although I miss the Main Event Mafia, it is good to see him as face again because it is something different. He is able to put on a good match with most opponents, and I think Wolfe is too. They might not top the match that the original post mentions, but I definitely think that they will have more great matches because they are both great in the ring.
