On Friday in Tokyo, Japan, TNA Wrestling World Heavyweight Champion Kurt Angle defeated longtime rival Brock Lesnar for the IWGP Championship in a match for Antonio Inoki’s new IGF wrestling promotion.

TNA officials spoke by phone with Angle following the match, who had this to say:

“The IWGP Championship is the second title to add to my growing collection,” Angle said. On July 15 at Victory Road, I’m going to add a third title – the TNA World Tag Team Championship. Then after Victory Road, there will only be one more title for me to win – and that’s to take the X Championship from that fat slob Samoa Joe!”

Angle finished up by saying…

“It's real...it's damn real...thank you!"

Kurt Angle will be returning to the United States with both his TNA World Heavyweight Championship as well as the IWGP Championship.

Hopefully this will lead to some interpromotional matches.

Yeah, i'd love for some inter-promotional stuff between TNA and IWGP... maybe Lesnar will turn up in TNA? It's possible...

Who else could put on a great match from IWGP with some TNA guys? It would definetely boost the X-Division, that's for sure.

Very interesting. I didn't even know that this match was happening, thanks for filling us in. Still, I doubt we'll be seeing any inter-promotional matches, in TNA at least. TNA has become more and more distant to other promotions as of late, and there hasn't be any of the cool stuff they had years ago lately. Like the X Cup and, um, International X or something?

This is very interesting. Eventually Angle is going to have to drop that title, and I'm interested in seeing who. I really hope we do get some inner-promotional matchups. God what the wrestling community would do if Lesnar showed up on Impact or Victory Road to take Revenge on Angle, I'd shit a brick. I think Lesnar still has a few years to go on the no compete clause.

I hope this match turns up on youtube, I like watching Angle and Lesner matches. Now I want to see the rematch.. Angle said he will defend against Lesner in an mma match. Now that would be worth watching. Also I would like to see some interpromotional stuff with tna. Lesner on tna equals ratings! Plus I love japanesse wrestling so some other guys on tna would be awesome too.

This is some interesting news, but I like it. Can you image if this did lead to some interpromotional matches? It be off the charts and TNA fansbase could only grow, though TNA seems pretty stuck on the idea of only using their talent. Once in awhile they go away from that, but I can see Angle showing up with the belts but losing the IWGP title soon. But what an accomplishment for Angle another World title for him.

this can be only good news for angle and TNA.

heres hopeing they will get a deal going to exchange talent and have some brilliant matches on impact and TNA PPV's

Lesnar could not to return to New Japan due to visa problems, he was then stripped of the IWGP title, and a tournament was held, which Hiroshi Tanahashi won. Earlier this year, Tanahashi lost to Yuji Nagata, who is the current IWGP Heavyweight Champion. therefore the IWGP BELT angle won is not and will not be recongnised by New japan pro wrestling the federation that owns the IWGP BELTS

When the belt was stripped Lesnar decided not to give the belt back to New Japan Pro Wrestling. The belt Angle is holding is the third generation of the IWGP Championship that has a different lineage than the original IWGP world title. Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar are the only people to hold this version of the belt so far. The belt is actually called the IWGP Third Belt Championship but IFG and TNA refer to it just as the IWGP World Title.

Did I correctly here Mike Tenay call it as the World Title of Antonio Inoki's new federation?

I believe Inoki's new company is called the Inoki Genome Foundation, or some such thing.

I haven't seen any of Brock's work in Japan but looking at the picture of him he looks a lil smaller like overall body size and with a bit of a gut to him. I didn't think he would be the type to let his fitness slide, he seems very obsessed with his physique. Might just be an odd picture, just a thought.
