Am I Selfish?

I own a laptop computer which I use for all of my dealings such as work, internet, communication etc. This is the only computer in my home where I am currently living with my family. Now fully well knowing this I allow everyone to use it whenever i am not busy with it, as long as they ask my permission.

I went out earlier today while leaving my computer at the home. When I come back a few hours later and want to again use it I find my sister on it. Now she had not asked my permission but that annoys me, so I told her I needed to use it and would give her time to finish up what she was doing and give it to me.

I waited 10-15 minutes and she showed no signs of getting off so I said "Ok I need to use it please give it to me". She responds "Why?", I said in return "Its none of your business, its my computer and I need to use it". Her response is "Youre always on it, all the time!"(she was yelling) and I yelled back "Thats because Its mine, I own it and purchased it with my own money". She then yells "Take it you selfish prick" and shoves it into my arms.

Now I allow them to use it whenever I am not busy using it as I said before. I in no way should give them the right to do this, as a matter of fact they, having their own jobs, could easily save up money to purchase their own and do with it as they please. I out of my own generosity allow them to use my property and yet I am constantly called selfish when I dont let them or I want it back, or because I use it a lot.

So do you agree with them? Am I selfish?

Then no you're not, though getting into a shouting match with a 24 year old is a bit childish to both parties. You could have said what you were using it for without resorting to the "it's mine" tactics. If you said porn she'd never use it again.

Well if it is my property for which I payed in full, thus I have every right to defend my ownership of such, just like a man has the right to protect his property from imminent domain.

And she pisses me off, as it is perpetual, thus I resorted to expressing my anger in raising my volume.

Also I think people watch porn on my computer. Which is fucking gross. (I have multiple siblings)

Selfish? No. An idiot? Yes.

If you don't want people using your computer without your permission, why is there not a password on your account? Put a password on your user account, and make sure you don't have an auto-login, and anytime the computer is awakened or turned on, they have to enter a password to get on it.

And if they want to use your computer, they have to come ask you.

Like I said, selfish? No. An idiot? Yes.

Incorrect and I will show why.

If you don't want people using your computer without your permission, why is there not a password on your account?

Why do you think that I do not have one on there?

Put a password on your user account, and make sure you don't have an auto-login, and anytime the computer is awakened or turned on, they have to enter a password to get on it.

Already do, but this is not the point. They should respect me and my property and not use it without my permission, be I logged in or not.

And if they want to use your computer, they have to come ask you.

Should be done regardless, you argument is moot.

Like I said, selfish? No. An idiot? Yes.

Idiot? Not in any way. I password my computer, but if I do not allow them to use it I am berated with an assault of yelling and insults from every member of my family.

Now normally I would rise above such petty insults but when it is incessant and I receive it both at home and on my phone I think I will just give them the password.

Your points overall are moot though. The thing is if I had a password or not the point is they should not be using it without my permission. If I want I should be able to leave my own property out in the open, fully open and use-able and return to find it unused. The thing here is disrespect aimed towards me and my right as a property owner not my idiocy from not hiding it or passcoding it from them.

And come now Slyfox, I respect you as a post and usually agree with your points, but do you really need to be so pessimistic and resort to such petty insults on me? The answer is you indeed do not. You can easily tell me what you think I should do or at the very least ask all of the details before resorting to such petty insults.

I have three computers and one laptop which i use for my uni work, the wife and kids use it.

In the end if i need to use it badly i would still let the wife do her thing on it, I don't understand the issue.

IMO if your sister wants to use it then talk to her like an adult, my two year old and four year old play the me and its mine game, I dont bother with that nonsense.

work your issues out, your both grownups.

Incorrect and I will show why.
I can't wait, especially since you're the one complaining about how someone is on your computer without your permission.

Why do you think that I do not have one on there?
Because I assumed if you DID have one on there, you wouldn't have given out your password? Which means she could never get on unless you were there?

Already do, but this is not the point. They should respect me and my property and not use it without my permission, be I logged in or not.
Agreed, but obviously that's not the case. So, you COULD be mad at them, or at yourself for not foreseeing the possibility they might get on your computer without permission.

By the way, I could have told you that would have happened.

Should be done regardless, you argument is moot.
Except it WASN'T done, so my point is actually quite valid.

Idiot? Not in any way. I password my computer, but if I do not allow them to use it I am berated with an assault of yelling and insults from every member of my family.

Then you are an idiot. Why put a password on the computer to keep your family off of it, if you're just going to give them the password.

And if you give them the password, how can you whine when they use it? Your reality fails in so many ways.

Your points overall are moot though.
Obviously not, since you're on here complaining that they were on your computer without your permission. Which shouldn't happen, if you take the proper steps to prevent it.

Good point, allow me a parallel example.

I work in the IT department at my school. Our students know they shouldn't get on any sites which can contain pornography, illegal items, or games. Using your theory, the IT department shouldn't take any precautions (like a web filter, for example) and just assume every student will do the right thing and will never look at web sites they're not supposed to look at.

Makes sense, right? Of course, if we DON'T have a web filter, and firewalls and all that, and students look at pornography, we can be held criminally liable, but hey, we told them "no, don't do that" so that should be enough right?

Your theory sounds pristine, until you go over it with the cold hand of reality. Then it just appears as foolishly naive.

And come now Slyfox, I respect you as a post and usually agree with your points, but do you really need to be so pessimistic and resort to such petty insults on me?
You want your family off of your computer, so you set up a password making it harder for everyone to log in (including yourself), just so you can tell your family the password (you know, the ones you were trying to keep from getting on in the first place), and then bitch when they do without your permission? Yeah, I think insults are quite appropriate in this instance.

Instead of being offended by them, why not learn from them? Why not change your user password, and not actually tell anyone? Do that, and three things will not happen. 1) Your family will not get on your laptop without your permission again, 2) You won't have to create a thread bitching about your family again, and 3) I won't call you an idiot again...well, at least not about this.

The answer is you indeed do not. You can easily tell me what you think I should do or at the very least ask all of the details before resorting to such petty insults.
In this case, the details actually made me think less of you. Are you sure that's the course of action you want me taking?

Then change yourr password, only have one account on it and tada. Easy.

It astounds me someone makes passwords to keep people out, and then tells people what their password is. I see it all the fucking time at work.

That, and the "clever" people who think using the word "password" as their password will never be guessed. So many stupid people in the world.

You do come off as a bit selfish, but I see your point. Keep in mind these kind of things work both ways when living with other people. I'm sure there are things in the house that you use even though you didn't pay for them. Did you pay for everything you eat or drink? Did you pay for all the toliet paper you use? Believe me I understand your point, but when you use "I bought it with my money" as an argument against people you live with you're opening a door that could lead down an ugly path. We're not always going to get along with the people we live with all the time. It's damn near impossible. I'm guessing this will be forgotten by tomorrow.

That's actually the #1 most frequently used password, right above abc123.

I'm gonna pull the ass card here and laugh at the fact, that he is 37 and his sister is 24 and he has other siblings and they still live at him, that's funny and creepy.
