One of the scenic beaches of Maine is our backdrop for this play, the sand gleaming in the sun, the waves coating the already wet sand more. A car sputters into view, then comes to a halt at the side of the road. A barely audible thud is heard, and the first actor comes out of the drivers side, in the form of Leon Kentsworth. He groans, kicks the car, then sits on the hood, looking out at the sun-coated water.
Leon: Well, this is great. Broken down in the middle of nowhere!
He looks into the car, and another person gets out, a cameraman. The view changes as we are now looking directly at Leon, visibly annoyed at the situation.
Cameraman: What now?
The interviewer turns to answer, but is saved by a rusty pickup truck pulling up alongside the two. A dirty man looks out the passenger side window at the car, then looks at Leon.
Man: Need a lift? I can bring ya into town. I was heading in for the day anyhow.
The camera shifts back to Leon, who looks back. He shrugs, then jumps off the hood and walks towards the truck as the camera follows. The man notices the second man, then looks down.
Man: Hold up, he coming too? I only have room for one more up here.
Leon: Only one? Theres no one else in there.
As he finishes the sentence, a chocolate Lab jumps onto the window. He barks, and the camera moves back a few steps.
Man: This heres Rusty. The two of ya could probably fit in the bed, if ya get close.
Leon just stares at the man, while the camera moves to the back of the vehicle. The interviewer just shakes his head and follows. He goes to jump in, but stops while on the wheel.
Leon: What do you want us to do with these things?
The camera moves to look in the bed, and a couple lobster traps come into the view.
Man: Just push em into the corner, they can probably take a better beating than you can.
Leon just shakes his head as he climbs in.
Leon: All this for an interview. Next time, Ill call him.
Cameraman: It would be easier.
The truck pulls out as they pass a sign that welcomes them to Eastport. Leon sighs as the sign zooms past and out of view.
Leon: We were so close
As a matter of fact, they werent. It took another ten minutes to get to civilization and get dropped off at the citys docks. The duo jump out as the man gets out of the cab, Rusty following him out. The man offers his hand to the interviewer, who looks at it for a minute before shaking.
Man: Nice meeting ya. Can you find your way from here?
The camera glazes over the surroundings as Leon considers the question.
Leon: I think we can, thanks.
The man nods and walks off towards the docks. Leon stares in that direction for a while, before turning back to the camera. He just shakes his head as he walks off with the camera following closely behind.
Leon: Well, were in the city at least, thats a start. Now to find the meeting place.
Leon looks down at a piece of paper with scribbling on it. He takes a look around as the camera looks out at the boats in the bay.
Leon: Something tells me that would be as easy as Im thinking it will be.
Cameraman: Is that him out there?
Leon looks out at the boat the camera is looking at while said camera zooms in on the moving target. The boat zooming into port does have a driver looking like their target, but Leon groans at the sight.
Leon: If it is, then we might as well head down there.
The two walk down to the dock as the camera stays on the boat is question. The closer it gets, the less the interviewer has his doubts about the person. They get to the docks right as the boat is being docked.
Leon: Well then.
The driver walks off, holding a trap in his left hand, rope in his right. He drops the wire box on the deck and ties the vessel off before turning to look at his guests.
Leon: Next time, Im calling you for the interview.
Flynn laughs, a loud noise that pierces the former silence. He pats Leons shoulder, a smile growing on his face.
Flynn: Come now, Maines not that bad. Sure, its different, but so is everywhere else in the world. Now, shall we start?
Leon: On a dock?
The former High school champion looks at the area, the camera following his gaze.
Flynn: Suppose youre right, not the right place for an interview.
He brings his hand to his forehead, a thinking motion for the man.
Leon: Do you have an actual car to go somewhere with?
Flynn shakes his head, then looks at his boat.
Flynn: Nah, I walk pretty much everywhere in town. We could go on deck, head into the cabins?
Leon empathically shakes his head.
Leon: No boats. Somewhere nice within walking distance?
Flynn: Theres a small park about a five minute walk from here. Good enough?
The camera looks over the two men, as Leon nods slowly.
Leon: Might as well.
Flynn: Great! Come along.
He walks off at a quick pace, leaving Leon and the cameraman quickly behind. The two business men have to run to catch up, but they dont meet up again until the park. Flynn sits at a wooden bench, two trees looking over the vast blue ocean. Flynn smiles as he looks over his shoulder.
Flynn: About time you got here. I almost fell asleep sitting and waiting for you.
Leon is panting at this point, annoyance painting his features. The cameraman doesnt seem that much better, as heavy breaths can be heard through the cameras mic. Leon walks up to the bench, as Flynn stands up, groaning as he stretches his legs.
Leon: Can we get this done?
Flynn: Thought youd never ask.
The camera positions itself in front of the bench as Leon takes a deep breath before going into his interview.
Leon: Hello, ladies and gentlemen. On Aftershock, our opening match will feature two newly signed talents. Dean Miles, and my guest at this time, Jimmy Flynn.
The camera pans back to include Flynn in the shot, as the man waves at the camera.
Flynn: Good day all!
Leon: Now, before we start with the questions, I think there are some people out there who want to know a little more about you.
Flynn looks at him, an intrigued look on his face.
Flynn: More than what was put on my app?
Leon nods, and Flynn sighs.
Flynn: What else do they want? Im a fairly straight forward guy, a kid who was a great wrestler in high school, and wants to go again.
Leon: Why do you want to come back? I think we all have the general idea you gave before, but I believe they want more.
Flynn sits on the bench, and invites Leon to do the same, which the interviewer does, forcing the camera to shift down a bit to keep both men in view.
Flynn: The biggest thing you need to understand
He rolls his head back and looks straight up at the clear blue sky.
Flynn: The biggest thing is that my family has always had an insatiable hunger for competition, we always have. My father is the biggest piece of proof for this. Played nine sports growing up, I believe, and hes coaching down at the Academy now, has been for five years now. Ive played four sports growing up, stopped for schooling, and now I need to get some more.
Leon nods, intrigued at the speech of the former wrestling champion.
Leon: But arent there other ways to get it?
Its Flynns turn to nod, as he turns to look at the smaller man.
Flynn: Believe me, Ive tried. Started with hunting and for a while that kept it good. But, after a while, shooting bears and moose two times your size started to not cut it, ya know? So I needed something else, and I felt a calling to go back to my roots, and I found WZCW. And now, I believe you have some questions for me.
Leon stares for a moment, then a cough from behind the camera gets him focused again.
Leon: Yes, first. What do you think of the other newcomer in your match, Dean Miles?
Flynn pats his face as he ponders the question.
Flynn: Dean Miles, why is that name familiar?
Leon shrugs.
Leon: Hes a former FBI agent, maybe youve seen him in the news?
Flynn: Possibly, but enough about that. I respect the hell out of anyone who protects a country, even if its from the inside like he used to. And now he wants to try out wrestling, could work out for him. I bet he got a ton of special training from the gov for hand to hand fighting, but Id also bet he doesnt know a lot about getting down on the mat and out working an opponent, like I used to do on a weekly basis.
Leon looks directly at the camera, while Flynn is still staring up at the sky, his legs out stretched in front of the bench.
Leon: Ok, anything else on him?
Flynn shakes his head as he looks back down at the camera.
Flynn: Not that I can really think of, next!
Leon shakes his head while The Devils Dancer looks right at the camera.
Leon: Ok, the other competitor in your match is someone who has already had a couple of matches in WZCW, The Shooting Star Josh Young. Young has been very impressive as of late-
Flynn: A-yayaya!
Leon recoils at the sudden noise while Flynn pushes the microphone away from Leon.
Flynn: Im stopping you there for a very important reason. When you say someone is impressive, one normally thinks of wins said someone has, correct?
Leon nods.
Flynn: Who did Young beat?
Leon looks down, Flynn staring intently.
Leon: Darren Bull.
Flynn: Darren Bull! The laughing stock of Aftershock! Let me tell you something about shooting stars, Leon. They might seem interesting at first, but sooner or later, and more than often sooner, they crash and burn out. The same will happen to Young, I guarantee it.
Leon: Are you saying youre going to make Young crash during your match?
Flynn puts his hand over his mouth in a mocking manner.
Flynn: I said no such thing, but it was implied, wasnt it? When you look at me, you see a physical specimen worthy of Olympus, with the skill to match an Olympian athlete. If you listen to the song that my people have sung when I enter for years, you hear a line that sounds like exactly what it says.
Flynn looks right at the camera, ignoring Leons attempts to get him to focus back on him.
Flynn: Miles, Young, one day you will see. Youll dare to come down to me. Cmon, take the chance.
Thats right, lets dance.
Flynn laughs as he walks off screen. The camera follows him for a bit before panning back to Leon Kentsworth, whos staring out at the direction Flynn went.
Kentsworth: Yea, definitely calling him next time.
