Yesterday I saw 311, and I thought why aren't thse guys selling out arenas, they're one of the better the bands out there, there bassist peanut is insanly good he rocks a string bass so well teh guitarist gets less attention then him. There vocals are great, the two different singers blend to such an extent that it seems like there's only one, teh drummer is one of the best drummers today, there guitar is good, but it's definitely their weak point, but still he's a good guitarist. Even though they have an average guitarist, they should still be selling out arenas. Got any reasons why the arena I went to wasn't sold out, it was the cumberland county civic center in Portland, Maine, or opinions?

Here are some links to their music

Well, all I know is that I have never heard of them up here in Canada. So I'll have to check them out.

But, the fact of the matter is, for a band to be selling out arenas they need to be mega-stars. They need a wide combination of things.

A)They need at least 300,000+ First Week Record Sales of a New Album (In Today's selling standards)

B)They need to have a "classic, must own" album that defines who they are.

C)They need to have an extremely dedicated fan base that puts the word out there. The best advertising is word of mouth.

D)They also need some International Success. Being mega-popular in a foreign country also boosts a band's profile

E)They need a crap load of radio play! Without radio play and the industries "fat cats" backing them up they just wont cut it

F)MTV Play. Even if its just one video a month, a million pairs of eyes are going to see it and out of that million about 50 will become fans and then the hype ball gets rolling.

G)They need a wicked good, dedicated manager and a very reputable promoter behind thier asses. Without those, you cant break up into the mainstream of arena rock.

It probably wasn't sold out, because they aren't that good. There's 1, maybe 2 songs I can stomach from them, and the rest is all rather average crap. They try to be too many things at once, where if they just stuck to being a blend of 2 genres, they'd be passable.

They sell out tons of shows in the Philly area, but the places hold only 1000 or 2000 people most.
