Going on 10 years with WrestleZone
In continuing with the oft un-posted in Time Machine series I will be doing all year here on the forums, today we will look at the world of sports in 1981.
We begin in the United States of America with the SuperBowl Champion Oakland Raiders. The Raiders beat the Philadelphia Eagles, 27-10, to win SuperBowl XV. Clearly this was during the pre-Al Davis era.
In the UEFA Champions league, Liverpool defeated Real Madrid, 1-0, in what is considered a high-scoring game.
Rhode Island's Pawtucket Red Sox hosted the Rochester Red Wings in a minor league baseball game, setting the record for most innings in a single baseball game. The game went a total of 33 innings - more than three full games - and had to be suspended and then started again more than 2 months later.
Major League Baseball went on strike for 49 days.
The LA Dodgers, led by manager Tommy Lasorda, beat the NY Yankees 4 games to 2, and the series MVP was a three-way tie, thus 3 MVP's.
The Boston Celtics won the NBA Title, 4 games to 2, over the Houston Rockets.
On September 16th, Sugar Ray Leonard defeated Tommy "Hitman" Hearns in the 14th round to unify the Welterweight Titles.
The USSR Men's Team won the World Field Hockey title held in Kuala Lumpur. Nobody cared.
Tom Watson won the Masters in golf. Tom Kite was the money leader at $375K, a fraction of today's winnings for a year.
Wayne Gretzky again dominated pro hockey, winning the scoring title and MVP again. The NY Islander dynasty moved ahead, winning the Stanley Cup 4-1 over the Minnesota North Stars.
John McEnroe owned Tennis again, winning both Wimbledon and the US Open.
The USSR won the Men's Water Polo title. Nobody cared.
