Sauron = perhaps the BEST villain in any story, ever.
Peter Jackson originally shot a scene in the final battle in Return of the King that had a physically restored Sauron fighting Aragorn. They removed Sauron, however, and replaced him with that giant troll thing. They thought Sauron was better left as a mystery. They were correct. There is nothing scarier than an evil that cannot be seen or fully known.
