Rebooking Survivor Series 1989

MMK

Getting Noticed By Management
First, let me remind people this is Rebooking/Fantasy booking. I bring this up because at this event I'm including a wrestler who was not even in the WWF at the time BUT could have been if the stars had aligned. They didn't, but in the world of rebooking I'm going to book the Survivor Series I would have liked to have seen. So with that, here we go...

SURVIVOR SERIES 1989

THE HULKAMANIACS
Hulk Hogan/ Dusty Rhodes/ Demolition: Ax and Smash
VS
THE FOUR HORSMEN
Ric Flair/ Barry Windham/ Brain Busters: Arn & Tully w/Bobby Heenan

(I know, Ric Flair wasn't in the the WWF in 1989, BUT he almost was. In fact they created Summerslam in 1988 solely to debut Flair but the deal fell through. IF he had arrived in 89 it would have been the perfect time, as 3/4'S of the Four Horsmen were already in the WWF. Flair was the only missing piece. Also, the concept of Survivor Series teams of 4 was custom made for the Four Horseman. If the NWA have a trademark on the term Four Horsmen, then they can simply be called The Heenan Family as I would have had Heenan manage all 4 members. Also, Tully Blanchard left the WWF the night before Survivor Series, which further complicates things. He failed a drug test. But I think his dismissal could have waited until after the event.

On the babyface side, Demoltion continue their awesome feud with the busters, Dusty Rhodes reignites his NWA feud with the Horsemen, and we get the dream match of Hogan vs Flair.

SOLE SURVIVOR: Ric Flair OR Hulk Hogan
(If this is Flair's debut, then he has to win. Perhaps Hogan gets double teamed on the outside of the ring by the other Horsemen and iss consequently counted out then it might be possible. Or Flair could simply hit If Hogan gets the win, then that means this is the end of the feud and Flair debuted much earlier in the year. Perhaps immediately after Wrestlemania 5 thus leading to a Hogan/Flair Summerslam 89 main event. So if this is the beginning of the feud, then I go with Flair. If it's the end of the feud, I give the win to Hulk. Either way, it would have been a great Survivor Series Main Event.)

THE KINGS COURT
Macho King/ Zeus/ Mr.Perfect/ The Genius
VS
TEAM U.S.A
Jim Duggan/ Hercules/ Brutus Beefcake/ Koko B.Ware

(Savage & Zeus vs Hogan was PLAYED out by the end of 89. Savage and Hogan had feuded all year long, while Hogan and Zeus had been feuding since June. Enough is enough. In fact the only reason I keep Zeus around is I think he's a good bodyguard for Savage and a great foil for Hercules. How do you not have a Hercules vs Zeus feud? I mean, come on.
Also, The Genius (Lanny Poffo) is Macho Man's real life brother and the then manager of Mr.Perfect so pairing the two of them with Macho and Zeus makes PERFFECT sense. Even moreso because Perfect and Genius were about to enter a feud with Brutus.
I also like that on the babyface side, every guy carries a prop. Hacksaw has his 2x4, Herc has his chain, Brutus has his scissors and Koko has his parrot)

SURVIVORS: Macho King Randy Savage & Mr.Perfect
(Perfects undefeated streak remains in tact)

THE WARRIORS
Ultimate Warrior/ Rowdy Roddy Piper/ Jake Roberts/ Rugged Ronnie Garvin
VS
THE MILLION DOLLAR TEAM
Andre The Giant/ Ravishing Rick Rude/ Ted Dibiase/ Greg Valentine
(This combines several feuds that went on throughtout 89. Warrior vs Andre. Andre vs Jake. Jake vs Dibiase. Jake vs Rude. Warrior vs Rude. Piper vs Rude. And Garvin vs Valeninte.)

SOLE SURVIVOR: The Ultimate Warrior. Warrior's being booked strong at this point on the way to Wrestlemania to face Hogan, so no sense in having him lose here.)

TAG TEAM SPECIALISTS
Tito Santana/ The Rockers/ The Hart Foundation
VS
THE FRENCH CONNECTION
Rick Martel/ The Rougeaus/ Dino Bravo & Earthquake

(Love The French Connection as a stable. Tito and The Rockers vs Martel and The Rougeaus at Summerslam 89 is probably the match of the year for the WWF in 1989. Have a rematch with Survivor Series rules with the addition of a few more guys and you have a classic survivor series opening match. The faces are referred to as "tag team specialists" as the rockers and harts are both tag teams and Tito was part of the former tag team champions: strike force.
TECHNICALLY, Earthquake is not a french-canadian, but he is canadian and he was Dino Bravo's tag team partner. So I feel he's not too out of place in this match. If people don't like his inclusion, you can easily take him and Jim Neidhart out and have it be 4 on 4. This is the only 5 on 5 match, as the others are all 4 on 4. I don't feel it's necessary to have an arbitrary number attached to each match. If the match calls for 5 on 5, then go with 5 on 5, if it calls for 4 on 4 (Such as with the 4 horsmen) then go with 4 on 4.

SURVIVORS: The Rockers and/or The Hart Foundation
(Survivor Series is about Tag teams, and The Rockers were always referred to as "Tag team specialists" so logically they, or any tag team really, should have the advantage in a survivor series match. So at least one of these matches has to have the Tag Team get the win. Plus, since this is the opening match, a Rockers win gets the crowd into the show.)

LEFTOUT: Akeem, Honky, Snuka, Powers of Pain, Bossman, Bad News, Bushwackers, and Rooster.
No need for any of them. Bossman was feuding with Dusty but I never cared for that feud and would have much rathered see Dusty feud with the Horsemen. Also Bossman and Akeem had no feuds left as a tag team seeing as how they were on the verge of splitting up, as were the Powers of Pain. Bushwackers, Bad News, Rooster, Snuka and Honkytonk were all jobbers at this stage.

I love your thread and I love your card, MMK. As soon as you said, “I'm including a wrestler who was not even in the WWF at the time BUT could have been if the stars had aligned” I knew you were talking about the Nature Boy!! Here's my version. Notice Windham in a role that is not as good as being a part of the Horsemen.

The Dream Team – Dusty Rhodes, the Hart Foundation (Bret the Hitman Hart and Jim the Anvil Neidhart), and the Bushwhackers (Bushwhacker Butch and Bushwhacker Luke) (with Rugged Ronnie Garvin)
vs.
The Hart Family – the Honky Tonk Man, Dino Bravo, Greg the Hammer Valentine, and the Fabulous Rougeaus (Jacques Rougeau and Raymond Rougeau) (with Jimmy Hart and Canadian Earthquake)

The Matadors – Tito Santana, the Red Rooster, Hercules, and Demolition (Ax and Smash)
vs.
The Models – Rick Martel, the Twin Towers (the Big Boss Man and Akeem), and the Powers of Pain (Warlord and Barbarian) (with Slick and Mr. Fuji)

The Ultimate Warriors – the Ultimate Warrior, Rowdy Roddy Piper, the Widowmaker, and the Rockers (Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty)
vs.
The Heenan Family – André the Giant, Ravishing Rick Rude, Haku and the Brain Busters (Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard) (with Bobby the Brain Heenan)

The Hulkamaniacs – Hulk Hogan, Jake the Snake Roberts, Brutus the Barber Beefcake, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, and Superfly, Jimmy Snuka
vs.
The King’s Million Dollar Court – Macho King, Randy Savage, the Million Dollar Man, Ted DiBiase, Zeus, Mr. Perfect, and Bad News Brown (with Sensational Queen Sherri, Virgil, and the Genius)

I tried to keep everyone that was on the original card on my version. Instead of five 4-on-4 traditional Survivor Series Elimination Tag Team match, I made it four 5-on-5 matches. I liked your idea of giving each manager their own teams. For the sake of Fantasy booking, let’s pretend that Barry Windham, Tully Blanchard and Akeem were on the card. I put the Widowmaker on the Ultimate Warriors, only for him to walk out half way through the match and revert back to being a Heel. The rest, I’m sure you can figure out.

survivor series 89 happens to be one of my favorite ppvs of all time, right along with survivor series 90 and summerslam 89-91..

but rebooking it is a fun concept and i like your ideas, i just wanna make it clear that 89 was so much fun to watch as a kid and still is entertaining today for me .. the intro, the promos, the wild teams, loved it so much and wish survivor series could go back to all 4 on 4 team matches.. EVERY MATCH, with 11 other months that we get the singles world title match..

would it really hurt to have ROMAN REIGNS ..whom is now officially the #1 contender, team with 3 guys and face off with SETH ROLLINS and 3 other guys.. continues the feud and saves their 1 on 1 title match for Dec PPV or sum time in Future..

the match at Survivor Series 89 i would alter first is Hulk & Jake & Demolition vs Ted Dibiase & Zeus & Powers of Pain..
the only thing awesome about this match is the super cool promos and pictures!!
Hulks team makes sense since Jake is biggest babyface in upper midcard at time and DEMO is top babyface team and enjoy their baby run till back to heels in summer 90.. i would SWAP out POWERS of PAIN for Colassel Connection of ANDRE & HAKU ..simply cause haku can work wonders with the babies compared to barbarian & warlord and have history with Demolition... i know andre & haku were managed by heenan but a quick mention that bobby heenan made a deal with Fuji ( which managers did often on wwe tv in 80s- 91 ish) so that and powers of pain especially warlord could have great power struggles with warrior & neidhart & bump rockers so that would work well....PLUS JAKE and Andre had good chemistry for whole year regarding the snake in the bag...

boy oh boy do i miss that GREAT GREAT hype SUPER HYPED intro voiced by VINCE MCMAHON... especially 1990 survivor series was PERFECT and lookin 4ward to reading ur thoughts on rebooking 1990, because i totally loved that ppv start - finish, including the idea of baby survivors vs heel survivors to declare the ultimate survivor!! and loved how the put tito with warrior & hogan ( so 1 baby could job!!)
but it is fun to read all u dudes opinions!
keep up the intrigue..

who else loved Vince McMahon classic intro, HAWWWWWKKKK ANIMALLLL AXXXXXX SMASHHHHH CRUSSHHHHHH

ITS THE SURVIORRRR SERIESSS!!

The biggest issue I had with this (and the next two) was how the matches themselves were booked. Why, for example, have 3 members of a team disqualified for the same reason, beating up Hogan? Made them look clueless.

A few changes, including how matches are booked, would have made an ok card a lot better in my opinion.

Hulk Hogan, Ax, Smash and Jake the Snake v Ted DiBiase, Andre, Haku and Zeus - Andre and DiBiase have a back story and history with Hogan, the Powers of Pain did nothing in the actual match to put closure on their feud with Demolition, and the Colossal Connection were about two weeks away from beating Demolition for the tag belts. Tease that here.

Ultimate Warrior, Shawn Michaels, Marty Jannetty and Bret Hart v Rick Rude, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard and Barry Windham - what an all-star concoction, plus switching Hart with Neidhart makes for a better fit with their respective teams. Rude and Warrior never truly finished their feud and I wasn't a fan of Rude's feud with Roddy Piper.

As stated, add Jim Neidhart to Duggan's team as he's a better fit than Bret was, but that match otherwise stays the same, as does Savage's (with Earthquake promoted from the start rather than replacing Windham)

Not sure what to do with Piper's match, but really only need a replacement for Rude, I'm sure I can come up with something

So following on from my last post, the most logical change would be to put Bad News Brown in Rick Rude's place, foreshadowing his feud with Roddy Piper, and make Mr Perfect the heel team captain - there was mileage in a Piper-Perfect feud.

And then Brown's place in the Big Boss Man's team would be taken by Akeem
