The Nashville Fairgrounds announced:

"A special event called "Celebrating 35 Years Of Wrestling - Jerry 'The King' Lawler Tribute" will be held at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds' Sports Arena in Nashville (formerly known as the TNA Asylum) on November 7th, 2008. Doors open at 6 PM and start time is 8 PM. Ringside tickets cost $15 and general admission is $10."

The Nashville Fairgrounds is, of course, the former TNA Asylum, and a building I promoter in 1997-99 with Bert Prentice as Music City Wrestling and then NWA Worldwide Wrestling.

This "Celebration" show is being promoted by Bert Prentice. No card has been realised yet. The show will be part of the annual Tennessee State Fair.

Nashville NWA Promoter Mike Porter will also be promoting wrestling cards during the State Fair on October 7, 14, 21, & 28 and November 11, 18, 25 (Thanksgiving Show) and 27.

The largest non-TNA gate & house in the Nashville Fairgrounds in the last decade featured Jerry Lawler vs Jackie Fargo in a Steel Cage in he late 1990s. Gate was in excess of $10,000 which was at the time the largest gate in the building in a decade or so. Also wrestlng on that card were Members of The Bad Street Boys, Former WWE Stars Shannon Moore & Joey Matthews (Joey Mercury), WWE star Shane Helms (Hurricane Helms, and Christian York.

So there's some sort of show to celebrate 35 years of The King. All well and good. It's very impressive that he's managed to stay around for that long. It's probably even more impressive that he isn't dead like most wrestlers are at his age. What'll be even more amazing is if WWE let him appear at this show.

Anyway out of those 35 years Lawler has been pointless for a very large percentage of that time. Forget his stuff up until he joined WWE. He was a talented worker. But for 15 years he's been a sell out. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But he went from being a serious wrestler, to selling himself as a comedy act in WWE. He feuded with Bret Hart. But it wasn't a serious feud. It just that Bret Hart wasn't able to do comedy which might have given it that impression. So for 15 years he's been a worthless wrestler. And for 10 years he's been a worthless commentator.

Maybe they should just celebrate the first 20 years of his career.

And for all the years he has been with the WWE, he hasn't won any titles there. He died in the AWA. I seriously can't remember all that much of Lawler in the WWE. Like you mentioned, he had that feud with Bret Hart and I guess he won a match against Jake "The Snake" Roberts, tagged a few times with his son Brian Christopher. But, aside from that? He hosted bikini contests and remained on colour commentary. And, didn't he hate on the WWF a long time ago while he was in Memphis or something?
