Zima Ion (Shiima Xion) Signs With TNA

MB1025

Championship Contender
Lucha Libre website R De Rudo conducted an interview with Shiima Xion shortly after his Match at an IWRG event in Mexico. Xion revealed that he has signed a contract with TNA and will be making his debut soon.

Paraphrased translation:
Xiion Shiima "It feels like home," when talking about Mexico. Regarding his match at TNA's Destination X against Austin Aries, Jack Evans and Low Ki, the Filipino said "I love my name but TNA renamed me to Zima Ion, I have a contract with them and will be appearing on television soon."

Great News. I like Zima but he comes off as a Filipino Consequences Creed/Carlito. I hope they can give him a new gimmick. I'm sure we will be seeing Evans signed sooner than later...Not to sure about Low Ki.

TNA is certainly serious about building the X-Division. Which is why I never understood the logic of people hating them for "doing the PPV and then phasing out the X-division afterwards" I think we can put that to rest.

I think this is a good step in the right direction for the X Division...there are plenty of good young talent out there for it...bringing back guys that were in it 7 years ago is kind of annoying. So Shiima is something I look forward to seeing.

Or Alex Shelley just now getting a X Division title shot...I think he's beyond that by now...that guy has so much potential to be one of the greats, but Russo/Bischoff/Hogan won't give him a serious look until he goes to WWE becomes huge there, and MAYBE comes back then they'll be like "Oh yea' you're the man brother."

he does nothing but X Division and Tag Team Wrestling his entire career, yet when Hogan and Bischoff get there it is their fault Alex Shelley hasn't become something?

It would have been dumb to break up the MCMG's.

Watch the haters now. They want a young guy, they get a young guy, but they have to bitch about it so ... DA TNA ROSTAR IZ CROWDED DEY BE WASTIN' DA MONEYZ!

Good signing. I like him, but he needs to shave that nest off his head. Other than that, I wish him luck.

I agree breaking up MCMG was dumb...and I think he needs to not be in the X Division...he'd be great for the TV title spot. I'm not one those who blame everything on Hogan/Bischoff...but I don't see them helping TNA be different other than cutting out the 6 sided ring...which at this point in time it would be useless...but it was fresh it was new and it was exciting now its a gimmick

Okay, so they shouldn't bring back people some viewers never saw wrestle in 2003?

If you honestly think Alex Shelly would be "great" as a main eventer....You are crazy.

He's a good talent but he is no main eventer. He will never be a serious looking competitor.

And, WWE would not main event him either. Do they main event Cody Rhodes, Kofi? No they do not. Keep dreaming.

Breaking up MCMG has it's benefits, It's time for new tag teams to shine and obviously Alex Shelley and Sabin have evolved to a point they don't need each other anymore. Will they make it big? No they're destined to be just X-Division stars.

Am I complaining about them bringing in Jack Evans despite MY PERSONAL dislike of him? No. I'm not saying don't bring in guys that had a chance, but there are guys out there who are good. TNA is suppose to be the place for guys who aren't Vince's idea of Champions...but TNA people are telling me Shelley can't be viewed as serious or a champion? Next thing you'll be telling me Jericho was never main event material

The Filipino Flex Factory is an excellent addition to the new and improved X Division. I've been lucky to see Shiima for many years now at local shows around the burgh where he has consistently put on great performances. Best of luck to Shiima Xion.

Also, I applaud TNA for putting more stock into the X Division and I hope some hard work and effort turn into success for them. The reboot of the X Division may not be the big answer TNA is looking for, but it will certainly produce some fun matches to watch. Much like cornbread...ain't nothin wrong with that.

I think signing Ion is a good step in rebuilding the X Division, if they are still intent on doing that. He showed that he is good in the rind at Destination X and went toe-to-toe with Austin Aries, Low Ki and Jack Evans. He has the charisma, but he does need to work on harnessing it ro present himself to the audience better. He could also use a little work on his promos, but that will come with practice. I really like this signing for TNA and I think he could go plaecs for them. It might take some time, but I think the TNA audience will give him the chance and he will show what he is able to do.

I agree Zumbo...they're definitely headed in the right direction. I look forward to seeing this guy I like his look.

Did we just miss the part where I said he'd be really good for the TV Title?

Yes and main eventing is not the TV title. The TV title was supposed to be an upper-midcard title but the constant complains of "tna dont push deh x-division! " has TNA now trying to make the X-Division more important than the TV title.

So, if this was the WCW TV title. Then yes, Shelly would be great. But as of right now, the TV title needs credibility. Maybe they could push Shelly to make it that way but MCMG is what people want more than anything.

TNA isn't going to separate them while trying to separate Roode as a single star. Unless, you would like to see Sabin and Storm form a tag-team.

I see what you're saying I just don't want you misunderstanding me as an Anti-TNA guy...I'm not...I want wrestling on tv...I want ROH/TNA/WWE...I want them all to do great. I do applaud them trying to bring back the X-Division they certainly needed to.

And as far as Shelley goes...no I don't mean insta-push him into the scene he isn't ready yet...but that also doesn't mean keep everyone in the X-Division...otherwise AJ would still be there. They have guys who in the future could be HUGE stars...and I do see Shelley as one of those guys eventually. And I do believe he could bring some credibility to the TV Title...not that I dislike Eric Young as he is a great worker...and I did enjoy the D-Lo Brown segment...but I would like to see the X/TV Title be more work heavy titles. Not trying to take your topic off topic though that's long way of trying to say that :D

Hogan,Bischoff, did not break the Motor City Machine Guns. Shelley got hurt and Sabin got hurt. Their not wrestling solo cause the company is trying to bury them as a tag team. I love how these people just blame Hogan and Bischoff for everything.

I do agree, Shelly has talent to be a great star but I see him as a Mysterio/Punk type World champion. A guy who wins from time to time to make things interesting but nothing serious.

I think he needs to retool his look before they could push him as a huge singles star.

Aries is the guy who will most likely come out of the X-Division quickly as a main eventer.

To be fair, Sabin isn't expected back until 2012 so Shelley won't be in the Machine Guns for at least 7 months of so. He'll be working singles in that time and if he impresses as a singles competitor, what would be the motivation to put him back in a tag team? This comparison is going to be a bit of hyperbole, but fans in the early 90's LOVED the Rockers. That said, should HBK's singles push have been halted because fans loved the Rockers? Should Bret Hart have stayed in the Hart foundation with Jim Neidhart? I'm not saying Shelley is either of those guys, but if he goes out and impresses, why can't he move up the card?

The reason you sign guys like Shiima Xion is to fill that lower card division when other guys outgrow it or become stagnate in it. This way you always have fresh blood and you aren't relegating guys who could potentially work higher on your card to continuing to wallow in mediocrity. Right now you are seeing Alex Shelley and Austin Aries feuding. In my opinion, both possess the ability to move up the card as both are incredibly talented. Just because they are small doesn't mean they can't be credible contenders and it certainly doesn't mean they can't be entertaining as all hell. We'll see though, but I gotta believe that while Shelley is a singles, you give him a chance to shine.

On another note, I really hope TNA comes up with a better name for this guy than Zima Ion. That name sucks.

Great signing by the company, I've been a fan of the guy's for awhile from his indy work. He's definitely one of the most flashy and entertaining young "high flyers" (or "X-Division" style) wrestlers in the biz today. Signing him is a great step in building the X-Division for the future, and I'm glad that TNA appears to be serious about continuing to push the X-Division even after the Destination X PPV.

Now, I can only hope and pray that they somehow watch some footage of guys like Rich Swann and AR Fox and sign both of them immediately, and this company will have a REALLY bright future for their X-Division. Those guys plus Xion could produce a new generation/wave of great X-Division talent in the company and I guarantee they would impress the fuck out of everyone in the Impact Zone, backstage, and at home. Look into that shit Dixie!

I'm going to have to break up the love fest a little bit here. Generally speaking, the guy strikes me as just one of a huge number of spot monkeys that've passed through TNA.

He'll make his debut full time with the company before too long, the IWC will be ready to bear the guy's children, there'll be posts and threads practically screaming for TNA to put the guy in the main event 3-4 months after his debut. The two times I've seen him wrestle, I just haven't been overly impressed. Like any other major spot monkey that's made waves, he has a lot of flash and some fancy flips & flops but take away those flips & flops, there's just nothing there. I've seen tons of guys pass through TNA in the years I've been watching that were the exact same way. I'm just not ready to delcare this guy as being anything special if that's all he's got.

What exactly do you mean by "spot monkey" though Jack-Hammer? I respect your opinion very highly on this here forum of ours, but I generally hate when people use that term. What makes him a "spot monkey"? Because he has a certain number of "spots" that he knows how to do and he tries to work them into every match he works? Every single worker alive does that. Is he a spot-monkey like people claim Jeff Hardy was, because he takes huge bumps that others won't? Not really, I've never seen him take a bump I thought was too dangerous or crazy.

I mean, if you want to be all technical, the X-Division was built on these "spot monkeys" as you claim. AJ Styles uses the same set of moves in every single match he's ever worked man, I could practically recite his finishing stretch of moves by heart (springboard forearm, moonsault-into-reverse DDT, Spiral Shock, Styles Clash), and those are all technically "spots". Does that mean Styles is a spot-monkey? No. Honestly I don't think there's such a thing. There are uneducated, untalented indie guys who fit that bill of what you're describing and don't understand the first thing about psychology, pacing, or crowd control, but when you've got people as talented as a Styles or Daniels doing those spots, it's fine. I'm not saying Xion is on their level, he isn't, but he's a really talented young guy who can only improve, and from what I've seen of him he has a bit of personality as well. He cut a really good little promo on an EVOLVE show a few months back that left me thinking highly of him.

Xion is not a "spot monkey", whatever that actually is. He's a great young talent that's only going to improve TNA's X-Division.

As a Filipino myself, I'm always happy to see a Filipino get signed to a contract to one of the bigger wrestling organizations (WWE or TNA). Zima should make a great addition to the X Division for sure and I hope to see him showcase his stuff frequently as I find him (just like most of the X Division talents) fun to watch in the ring. I just hope he cuts his hair. Besides that little pet peeve, I'm happy about this.

While I do not agree with Jack Hammer's opinion, I can certainly understand why he might feel that way. There have been plenty of X Divisioners that have come and gone pretty quickly. Maybe, early in his career Shiima could be classified as a "spot monkey" but I've seen Shiima's work develop over the years. I am also excited to see Shiima continue to develop now that he will be wrestling on national TV. A guy that doesn't have a huge physique such as Shiima needs to use those big spots to get noticed. Sad but true. Now that he's been given an opportunity on Impact Wrestling, hopefully Shiima can learn from all the experienced people around him to help him become a more complete wrestler.

No matter how this run ends up for Shiima, he can still add his name to the list of sweet wrestlers from the state of West Virginia. Big Bully Busick, Jamie Noble, Necro Butcher, and now Shiima Xion. Yeah, I left Heath Slater off of this list on purpose.

I think this is an EXCELLENT Signing for the X-Division and he could be a Key Part to the X-Division's resurgence along with the signings of Austin Aries and Kid Kash. Ion really impressed in his two matches and he has a decent look for an X-Division type wrestler he's pretty good in the ring and he has some charisma from what I've seen from him in indy promotions like EVOLVE, he's also very young so he has time to grow as a wrestler. The thing I like most about him is that he fresh face and someone we have not seen before on TV in TNA. Overall I think this is a Very Good signing for the X-Division.
