You're So Vain

Ever year that classic song? Carly Simon was an idol of music in the 70s, and the named single was her most famous song. But almost everytime the song got a playover, the DJ would make a remark, stating who they felt the song was about. Carly never did tell the full name, but as a marking campaign for her greatest hits album, she added an easteregg. By playing the single in reverse, the name of the person would be identified.

Was it Kris Kristofferson? Warren Beatty? Mick Jagger? Cat Stevens? Trinity Bowles? James Taylor?

Well apparently it was never any of them. The name is a David. David who? That is for you to guess. Any guesses? She has once said the name contains the letters "A, E, and R.

DAvid LawRence GEffen is rumoured as the man behind the name. But just because they have a history, doesn't make it so. I always liked the posibility that the song was about David Bowie, (David Robert Hayward-Jones). A song about Vanity and Bowie go hand in hand, and although they have never been connected, David Bowie was abole to connect with so many people through different Mediums, that I suspect he is the man.

Not surprising that no-one has replied to this. However this

"Oh, you had me several years ago
When I was still quite naive
Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me"

suggests to me that it's not David Geffen, seeing as he is gay. The description couldn't be further from Bowie either. I've always believed it was Warren Beatty but that rumour has been killed this week.
I'm reading and apparently it's about 3 people, one of which is Beatty. Which is kind of cheap. In all likelihood it's about a nobody or someone from the L.A scene 1967-69 when the likes of Joni Michell, James Taylor, David Crosby, Jackson Browne etc were all living within 200 metres of each other.
