One of the most unprecedented achievements in WZCW history was finally completed on Ascension 50 when "Showtime" Cougar finally won the World Heavyweight Championship, gaining the one title that he has never held and it got me thinking: that was a long time for Show to capture the title since his arrival; I wonder how many other superstars there are on the roster right now that have been around for a long time (or have been around for a while) and did not get the opportunity to hold the title? It didn't take long for me to get a list down of the greatest competitors we've had and compare with the WZCW title history, easily allowing me to find a top 5 list... which, oddly enough, is in reverse alphabetical order as we count down from 5 to 1.
The 5 Greatest Competitors to Never Hold a World Championship:
Disclaimer: each column that I will be producing for this magazine has undergone extensive review and research to make a plausible and fair conclusion, mixed with my own experiences watching as a fan. If you have any queries or opinions, you can send them to me and I will be sure to get back to you during the next issue detailing how incorrect you are.
5. Gordito
A blast from the past: we're going to have a few more of these.
The infamous Dirty One could be considered one of the fastest rising superstars that WZCW has ever seen, starting off at the bottom ranks as a curtain jerker and blazing through the Mayhem division to find himself getting a World Championship opportunity. Although he did not win any titles in the process, his hard-work in the ring and overall toughness got him noticed by many, especially when he took down multiple main event names such as Constantine and Phoenix in the Gold Rush tournament to earn a shot at the then-immortal Ty Burna who had only begun his title reing. Despite the first loss, he got the attention of the Master of Chaos and offered to be a mentor of sorts and was riding a high at that point of his career. He then found himself in another title match against Ty but with Barbosa in the mix, a rival to both men. Gordito would remain in the main-event scene for quite some time before slowly working his way down the ranks and taking time off away from the company.
Gordito did come back for a second run with the company and although he was featured in many high-profile feuds such as the Apostles vs. WZCW war, Gordito was unable to reach that peak in his career and thus never got the World title. A solid effort by the dirty one.
Celeste comes as an interesting piece of work when it comes to this subject: Crimson was apart of the very first roster when WZCW launched in 2007 and is still a member of the roster from this very day, competing at a very high level in the company... although half of that time for Celeste was spent away from the company, coming back at different points in time. However, throughout her entire time in WZCW, Celeste Crimson's first championship opportunity came when she was a contender against Black Dragon's Eurasian Championship at the 4th Lethal Lottery event. For an excellent competitor like Celeste to be around this long and only getting her very first title match 4 or 5 years later seems like something was amiss... but since this is a list about World title opportunities, let's get back on subject.
The only times that Celeste has ever had the opportunity of attempting to fight for the World title was during the numerous Lethal Lottery events she competed in where one of those times was due to Crimson coming in as a surprise attraction (during a time where she was inactive). With all of this behind her, Celeste now has a proper chance at finding her way into the World Championship match at Redemption as she sets to face off against S.H.I.T... so Celeste could potentially be taken off the lists quite quickly.
For those of you who are going to blast me for putting this man in here, let me clarify one thing: the World championship that Carmen won was not an officially recognised championship by WZCW or the wrestling world. The title he won was a creation that Steamboat Ricky brought in and was considered a fake title, despite their match at Kingdom Come II recognising it as an actual title defense. If it's not on the records, it doesn't exist... although they had one hell of a contest that night.
Other than this minor detail, Carmen had been fighting at a grade A level for quite some time, especially in the latter half of his career where he made his most notable stand during the 2nd Lethal Lottery event, lasting the longest time that anyone had ever seen: a record that was not beaten until the 4th Lethal Lottery (which was due to the 10 man number increase, resulting in the match becoming longer and therefore possible times lasting longer). He survived from almost the start of the match right until near the end, putting up a fight of his life. If Carmen stuck around a while longer and continued to work and train, he would have undoubtedly become a World Champion.
One of the more controversial and "love to hate, hate to love" superstars of WZCW makes his way at number 2 for this list.
When Blade stepped foot into that squared circle, you know you were going to be up for a wrestling match. This guy had it all: the technical prowess, an expert in submissions and a high intelligence in the psychological department, doing everything he can to stay one step in front of the opponent no matter what the cost... he even had the cocky attitude and self-nursing ego to go with it. The one thing that separated Blade from the rest of the pack was that he backed up his words with results. We're talking about a man who was able to beat the best in the business when most people who were ranked above Blade couldn't defeat those who were at the top of their game. He beat World champions, former and current, in non-title contest yet every time he had the opportunity to grab the brass ring, Blade jumped a few inches short.
He managed to win the Eurasian championship and as most of the former champions have done, he held onto that title for a very long time and defended it against the best the company had to put forward. He even coordinated his own band of misfits and put on some of the best feuds you'll ever see in a WZCW ring. Blade has truly been a successful wrestler and will one day become a legend but unfortunately, he has yet to call himself a former World champion.
Lucky... or unlucky... number one on the list is the Ratings Winner and one of the best and arrogant competitors around, Austin Reynolds.
Reynolds has been around for as long as men like Blade, instantly getting himself recognised in the company as one of those men to watch out for. Reynolds was very cocky to start out with and annoyed many fans with his unforgiving attitude. As he rose within the ranks, he proved to the fans that he was the real deal and soon became an Elite X champion... and a long-reigning champion at that. Along with this title reign, Austin has achieved much success in the rivalry department having 5 star classics alongside Showtime, Constantine and Ty Burna... even having Ty openly admitting that Reynolds was his hardest foe through his journey as the World Champion. Reynolds has had multiple opportunities at the title and got a couple of matches in return, putting on excellent performances but was never able to win the big one. Reynolds recently took a break from singles competition and began competing as a tag team, forming one of the best tag teams in recent memory and being one of the first teams to defend the title on more than one occasion and tying for 1st as longest reigning tag team champion.
Despite Reynolds may have his quarrels with former partner Ricky Runn, he is a competitor that will truly always be main event quality and sometime down the line, Reynolds will have his day in the spotlight and become a World champion.
