WWF House Shows 1991

Occasional Pre-Show
Hello,

I have been reading wwf house show results for 1991.

I was curious to read what matches took place. As I got into wrestling just after the Royal Rumble that year. I was kinda surprised that on some days there was as many as 4 house shows. They would divide the roster with half being on or around the east coast and the other half on or around the west coast. How did they decide who would be where?

I also noticed that they had matinee house shows. Does anyone know what time there were?
The evening ones I would assume would be around 7-9pm. I would have thought that there wouldn't be many people at house shows but some had attendances of 14,000 which is better then some ppv's nowadays.

in terms of pay, were wrestlers paid in regards to house show appearances or would it depend on how much money was made via attendances and merchandise?

I also read about Brutus Beefcake being used as a character called the Mariner who would attack Rick Martel and Earthquake after matches at house shows. I was surprised by this as I thought he wasn't active due to his facial injuries. Why was this character never mentioned or shown on tv?

I am sure I will have more questions when I finish reading the rest of the house shows from 1991. I'm currently coming up to WM7.

Thanks

Usually there was at least an A-list and a B-list show. The b-list might be headlined by say Savage vs. Perfect while the other would have Hogan vs. Earthquake. It helped to double revenue and got a cheap dollar out of a lot of people. Rather successful.

I also noticed that they had matinee house shows. Does anyone know what time there were?

This was a common thing and usually they would be at about 3-4 PM. Mania used to start at around 4 in the afternoon. As for the attendance, the shows were more popular back then. With no Raw, they had the Sunday morning Superstars show and Prime Time Wrestling which were just random matches. House shows were the big deal.

People made money off merchandise indeed. Hogan made a fortune off of it. I'd assume they were paid a base salary but I honestly don't know.

I also read about Brutus Beefcake being used as a character called the Mariner who would attack Rick Martel and Earthquake after matches at house shows. I was surprised by this as I thought he wasn't active due to his facial injuries. Why was this character never mentioned or shown on tv?

He was a masked man and often times you would see characters and stories on house shows that were never mentioned on TV. Hogan vs. Perfect was a mega house show feud in the very early 90s and was glossed over on TV. Undertaker fought Nailz a bunch there and you would never hear about it. Sometimes MSG had full on hour long Royal Rumbles but they were never mentioned. Hogan once pinned Flair for the WWF TItle and it was never once mentioned on TV and Flair was always recognized as champion. Very common occurance.

I am sure I will have more questions when I finish reading the rest of the house shows from 1991. I'm currently coming up to WM7.

Thanks

Thanks KB for answering my questions.

Oh I have to give you props for your reviews. I love reading the old wwf stuff from the early 90's and the wcw ppvs.
Keep up the great work.
