Welcome to My (And Not Sly's) House
WWF European Rampage 1992
Date: April 19, 1992
Location: Sheffield Arena, Sheffield, England
Commentators: Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan

This is a European show that the company would do every year. I’m not sure if this was a PPV or not but it might have been. Savage is world champion here so it’s somewhere between Mania and Summerslam. Also I’m not sure if this is in the same arena or not the whole way through but I think it is. Let’s get to it.

This is presented by Atari. WOW. I think this is a PPV.

A montage of guys on the roster opens us up. I can’t imagine they’ll all make the show barring a battle royal. Yeah this is PPV.

Tatanka vs. Skinner

Tatanka gets an ERUPTION. Sweet DAMN. This is the last night of the tour apparently. Skinner is now the operator of FCW for those of you unaware. Tatanka is relatively new here and is in long tights still. We talk about Colonel Mustafa who is more commonly know as Iron Sheik getting stuck on an escalator for an hour and a half yesterday.

It’s all Tatanka so far as you would expect. This is more about just running down the card for the rest of the show so far which is fine I guess. It’s a glorified house show but that’s all you need sometimes. Gorilla and Heenan are awesome of course as they always were around this time.

Tatanka might be bleeding but I’m not sure. Heenan does that little stutter when he says his name which is funny for some reason. Skinner yells at Tatanka to keep his shoulder down. He’s direct if nothing else. Heenan is apparently reading a rule book and looking for something Tatanka is doing wrong. Skinner scared me as a kid. He was just creepy.

I’m really not sure why this was chosen as the opener. Tatanka meant very little at this point and neither did Skinner for that matter. This would likely be better suited as a dark match or something like that. It’s not terrible though. Skinner goes for a double axe off the middle while Tatanka is on his back. It’s the jump into the boot spot which is one of the dumbest things I can remember. What’s the point of that anyway?

Bobby says no one here has ever seen an Indian. I wonder how true that actually is. Would they be familiar with what his character is supposed to be? He makes a quick comeback and hits the Papoose To Go to win.

Rating: D+. Nothing special but it was ok for an opener I guess. Tatanka wouldn’t mean much of anything for about a year or so. This was just odd to say the least, but it could have been far worse. I don’t think Skinner was around much longer.

Maybe this is on TV as we’re told we’ll get an interview with the LOD when we come back.

The LOD say they’ll beat up Bravo and Mustafa. What kind of messed up team is that?

Dino Bravo/Colonel Mustafa vs. Legion of Doom

Bravo has his hair dyed black again. Mustafa is better known as the Iron Sheik. I guess this is some weird jobber team or something. Bravo would be dead in less than a year, widely considered due to a mafia hit in Canada of all things. The LOD was just awesome back around this time.

Bravo would retire just after the tour, so this might be his last ever match at least in WWF. Animal and Bravo start us off. Take a guess as to what happens. They have more luck with Hawk, who I always thought was the more dominant of the two, although Animal was better in the ring. Mustafa gets an abdominal stretch on Hawk to a surprising lack of bitching from Monsoon. I don’t think I’ve ever heard that before.

Animal gets the hot tag and we go completely nuts for a bit. In a nice little ending, Sheik misses a clothesline on Animal and Hawk comes off the top with a clothesline of his own to end it. Quick ending that keeps the LOD looking dominant. What else did you expect?

Rating: D+. Just a semi-quick squash. I can’t really complain about the heels as this was just meant to pop the crowd by letting them see the LOD. It’s about 5 minutes long and the LOD are never in any real trouble. It’s very odd seeing a not bleached Dino though and even weirder to think it’s his last match.

We go to Sean Mooney (Gorilla says Michaels) with Sid and Harvey Whippleman. We get Sid vs. Taker tonight. That’s an interesting pairing for this era. Sid talks about reading a book and about ripping Taker’s throat out.

Paul Bearer says death is coming for Sid. Taker says he has a tombstone for Sid. Not one of their better interviews.

Sid Justice vs. The Undertaker

Mike McGuirk is the announcer here in something close to a purple tuxedo. It was a different time. For some reason it’s weird to think that Sid was in the main event of two Wrestlemanias. Sid jumps him to start as we preview Mania 13. He might actually move more slowly than Taker does if that’s possible. I love how everyone fears Old School and no one has ever thought of hitting him in the leg or shoving him off the ropes.

Harvey stops the Tombstone maybe two minutes into the match. Heenan says he just got up on the apron. Gorilla asks what does that mean. Heenan: It means he got up on the apron. These two are just perfect at times. Bobby mentions that Sid wants the Warrior. Thank goodness those matches never happened.

Sid hits a chokeslam and then just slams Taker into the mat. Sometimes you can’t beat simple stuff. We go to the floor and Taker gets slammed into the post….and gets counted out? Seriously? This wasn’t even six minutes long. Sid pops him with a chair a few times afterwards and it does nothing. He gives him a neckbreaker which is incredibly odd.

Rating: D-. They did nothing but hammer each other for the most part. When I say hammer I mean punch and forearms to the back that is. This was just bad and with it being so short I’m wondering what in the world they’re going to fill another hour and forty minutes in with. Bad match and just a weird choice of booking.

Buy The Sun.

Shawn says he’ll win the world title.

WWF Title: Shawn Michaels vs. Randy Savage

We’re about four and a half months after Shawn threw Marty through the window and became someone full of potential. I don’t think these two ever fought other than this. If they did I don’t remember it at all or it was never released on video. Gorilla says winning the title would be a feather in the cap of Shawn. The title is now a feather. MONSTER pop for Savage.

Liz actually looks happy here for once. It’s kind of surprising that they would go to Europe in Aptirl only to come back for Summerslam a few months later. To be fair though it was possible they would have gone to Washington DC instead. Savage has a bad leg here. We get a nice back and forth feeling out sequence to start and Shawn is in oversell mode already.

Savage throws a chair in for no apparent reason. Gorilla kind of messes up and suggests the referee was paid off by Heenan at Mania and that it cost Flair the title. Eh I guess one mistake in awhile is allowed. I wonder if the former Sherri and Savage connection will be mentioned. The women get into it so Savage sends Liz to the back, allowing Shawn to take over.

The ring is on that weird platform thing again. We talk about Robin Hood for no apparent reason. Crowd is hotter for this than for the rest of the show combined thus far. Shawn’s offense is far different than what it would become. He’s using neck and backbreakers here. That’s not something you often see from him but it shows another style he’s capable of. We go old school as Savage hits a slingshot but Shawn gets a hand in to block some of it.

Sherri calls Shawn baby and Bobby tries to figure out what pet names Gorilla might have had, including Monkey Man. These two crack me up and steal the show a lot of the time which is saying a lot considering this is a good match. Shawn hits Sweet Chin Music for two. It’s always weird seeing stuff like that when it means nothing.

He hits a top rope fist which I’ve never seen him use outside of a Rockers match. All Shawn here as we’ve been at this for awhile now. The crowd is popping huge for just a punch from Savage. There goes the referee. I thought going back to 92 would get me away from that stuff. Apparently not though. The big elbow hits Shawn but there’s no referee. I’d assume that Savage is the guy he took the elbow from so we might be seeing an education there.

Savage spits at Sherri as the referee is back now. Liz comes back to take care of her so at least we get more eye candy. A top rope cross body gets two and the crowd dies when it doesn’t work. Shawn gets a top rope sunset flip for two and then Savage runs up the corner and hits a spinning cross body for the pin. The bell rings but there’s no music. Shawn keeps beating on him which backfires of course. Ah there’s the music. Weird ending to a quite good match.

Rating: B. Solid stuff here but did you expect anything different really? Like I said I think this is their only head to head meeting so it’s history if nothing else. Shawn was getting a chance to showcase himself here and it worked. The ending really was odd looking. I’ve seen theories elsewhere that the first cross body was the end but Shawn forgot and kicked out so they threw the ending together. That would make sense as it looked totally different from the rest of the match. This is on the Savage DVD if you want to check it out.

We go to Sean Mooney (AGAIN called Michaels by Gorilla) who brings out the Bushwackers. Heenan makes a sheep noise, which is a very old school reference as when they weren’t in the WWF the Bushwackers were called the Sheepherders. They march through the crowd for like three minutes and the music has to be restarted. It’s Easter Sunday apparently. Luke bites Sean’s ass. This is weirder than it sounds.

Alfred Hayes is with the Mountie and Jimmy Hart. He has a very tough opponent tonight. And it’s Virgil. Holy house show match Batman.

Sean is with Virgil, who is apparently one of the most popular wrestlers in the company. I’ll put it like this: Virgil is better in the ring than he is on the mic. He stays on one sentence for about 45 seconds.

The Mountie vs. Virgil

Mountie singing his theme music in the aisle was always funny to me. Gorilla makes gay jokes while hiding them fairly well. Virgil is wearing a nose protector since Sid hurt him recently. Virgil, the face, runs from Mountie to start. Can he do anything right? Hopefully this is short as it’s far from interesting or anything like that.

This is far more about Heenan and Gorilla making jokes than anything in the ring. Virgil steals Mountie’s shirt as the quest for the point to this continues. The mask comes off of Virgil and the Mountie takes over. Jimmy Hart has an earring. That is just WEIRD looking to say the least. We now pause for Mountie to get dressed again. Virgil makes a comeback, Hart interferes, the shock stick to the ribs ends it.

Rating: F+. It was long and boring. Who in their right or wrong mind thought this was a good idea? This is the definition of filler and I’m out of things to say about it.

Ad for a Summerslam contest.

Rick Martel runs down London and says he’s going to win the Intercontinental Title from Bret.

Bret says it’s about ability and not looks.

Intercontinental Title: Bret Hart vs. Rick Martel

This should be good. Someone should start doing the whole give the kid the glasses thing. It’s a great way to get someone over as a face. Both guys are in pink here but Bret’s is manlier. We start with a lot of clotheslines for some reason. Something tells me this is going to be a long one. It’s coming off as a slow build which is one of my favorites. This is rather technical stuff here and while it’s fine it’s not incredibly interesting.

Martel chokes away and works on the throat which isn’t something I’m used to typing. How often do you see an Intercontinental Title match on another continent? Martel takes over for a bit and walks into a small package for the pin. I know it sounds abrupt and that’s because it was. This just kind of finished.

Rating: C-. It’s not bad, but it’s bordering on just being there. The match was ok, but it felt incomplete. There’s no story or anything to it and the match just ends out of nowhere with no real build to it. They never really hit the next gear that they needed to and it hurt this a bit I think.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan is in the bathroom or something. Hayes asks if he’s ready and Duggan says he likes the fans chanting USA. He gets Repo Man I guess.

Repo Man vs. Hacksaw Jim Duggan

Well I guess we have to kill some time before Bulldog has the big match of the show. Duggan gets a fairly solid reaction but nothing great. His run with the company would be done in about a year or so. Duggan starts up a USA chant and the fans go along with it, much to Bobby’s chagrin.

We stall for a good bit before finally starting. That’s actually a good thing here given who’s in the ring. I still can’t get over that that’s Smash. It was one of the best character changes I can ever recall. Duggan gets rammed into the exposed buckle which does very little. You know Heenan is going to make fun of something like that.
Duggan gets rammed into the exposed buckle which does very little. You know Heenan is going to make fun of something like that.

Repo hits him in the jaw which prompts Gorilla to say that’s how you get cauliflower ear. Duggan sells every fall the exact same way. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad. He hits the buckle again with his shoulder this time. Duggan rams Repo’s head into it and I shake my head in awe at the fact that the referee is just fine with this somehow.

The Three Point Clothesline puts Repo on the floor as this is dragging to an extent. And Repo pops Duggan in the face with the hook for the DQ. Repo beats Duggan up more after the match but a shot with a board ends that. Hacksaw gets in the ring and starts a USA chant. Damn xenophobic freak.

Rating: D. Nothing here at all but it could have been a bit worse I guess. The fans were somewhat into it but there was very little point to anything in this. At least it didn’t go on longer. The post match stuff helped it a bit, but not much.

Savage says Michaels is great and that he’s glad to be champion again. Mooney suggest Savage vs. Davey Boy. That sounds interesting actually. Savage challenges Flair for a rematch despite being the champion.

Another ad for the Sun.

British Bulldog says he’s glad to be home and that he’s going to beat IRS. Yeah that’s actually the main event.

IRS vs. British Bulldog

IRS is a tag champion here and is with Hart. Smith of course gets the superhero pop and there is absolutely no way he’s not winning this with the powerslam. I could have seen him having a fluke world title win around this time actually which is something I’ve long thought. Jake and I debated that once and I can’t remember what he thought.

Gorilla threatens to end Heenan’s free speech. We stall for a long time as the fans are all over Irwin. I’d have gone with Smith vs. Flair here but I can kind of see why they didn’t do that. The air horns are going crazy here and now it’s all IRS. Oh no. Do you think the hero could lose? Gorilla says that IRS has had his clocked cleaned for the last ten minutes. Not bad for a match that’s been going on for about 5.

What kind of advantage would holding the ropes help in an abdominal stretch? I get it if it’s another person because they’re pulling the arm back further, but how would pulling the rope help? IRS really likes chinlocks. BREAKING NEWS: SHAWN MICHAELS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING! Good thing this wasn’t WCW at this time of he would be fined for it.

We continue to kill time before the comeback begins. There’s your delayed suplex which wasn’t a big deal yet. Davey stands on IRS’ tie. That would hurt his neck I’d think. Davey sends him into the corner and IRS tries to jump over him by pushing off the top but gets caught on Smith’s shoulder. Take a guess what happens. Massive posing ends the show.

Rating: C-. Totally average match here but a hot as hell crowd helps things out a lot. There was zero drama but this was an occasion where that didn’t matter at all. Smith dominated in the end and the crowd popped like a bunch of cherries. What more can you ask for?

Overall Rating: D. This show SUCKED. There is one, count it one, good match on the whole thing. Other than that everything is either filler or house show level stuff. The pop for the Bulldog is nice but it pales in comparison to Wembley a few months later. This show isn’t worth watching at all so other than the world title match, save your time.

The world title match is on the Savage DVD, very good it is too.

I vaguely remember this show from my youth, but not a whole lot. Wouldn't have been a PPV though as we didn't have them in England by then I don't think. First wrestling PPV here was One Night Only anyhow, probably a Sky special.

Cheers for doing it KB anyway, enjoy these obscure ones.

Savage and Michaels wrestled another title match later in Germany on that same tour. They also wrestled when Shawn was the IC champ. Nice post. Brings back memories. Those were the days.
