WWE Battleground: General Discussion & Aftermath

Jack-Hammer

YOU WILL RESPECT MY AUTHORITAH!!!!
As Battleground takes place towards the end of the month, here's the general discussion thread. The Fatal Fourway for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and the battle royal to determine a new WWE Intercontinental Champion have already been announced for the show. So go to it.

Not expecting much? MitB was pretty great, and now with the feud reboots before Summerslam, Battleground is looking really strong.

Gotta find a way to keep Ambrose and Rollins from having a 1 on 1. Gotta get the tag titles in there. Gotta have a few mid card matches that really mean something...Rusev v. Swagger doesn't sound that appealing. But otherwise, the field is wide open for what they can do for Battleground.

WWE picked up some heavy momentum at Money in the Bank and on the RAW after it, and in response saw an increase in ratings. If WWE wants to see that again, they'll have to carry that into Battleground. It isn't really an "A" show, let alone a "B" show (I look at Pay-Per-Views like Money in the Bank and Extreme Rules as "B" shows or second-tier shows), but WWE has a stacked card as of right now. I'm really intrigued to see what they do in the main event. I'm certain Cena will retain, and Triple H will interfere in some shape, way or form to screw over Reigns and set up their match at Summerslam or Night of Champions.

I expect the Intercontinental Championship to go to Dolph Ziggler. He's been in the doghouse for quite some time but has been getting a bit more air time lately. I haven't actually looked at all of the participants, so that may change, but right now my e-money's on Ziggler.

So far the card looks like it will be...

WWE Title: John Cena (c) vs. Randy Orton vs. Kane vs. Roman Reigns

WWE Intercontinental Championship Battle Royal

Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose

Chris Jericho vs. Bray Wyatt

WWE Divas Title: AJ (c) vs. Paige

Jack Swagger vs. Rusev

I was dreading Battleground this year especially after last year's show, but this actually looks like a good card for a filler PPV.

As for other matches...

I'm guessing we'll see Naomi take on Cameron but hopefully that will be on the pre-show, not on the main card.

I could see Sheamus defending the US Title against the returning Hollywood Miz as The Miz is "The Marine".

If The Usos are on the card, the only team I can see them defending their belts against are Stardust & Goldust, which should be a good match between the two teams.

Title match - 4 Way
IC Battle Royal
I hope they don't shoot their load early on Rollins v. Ambrose UNLESS there's a swerve, and Summerslam results in Rollins v. Ambrose II Hell in a Cell or something else gimmicked.
Usos and Jericho vs. The Wyatts is what I'm hoping for, to save Jericho v. Bray until Summerslam.
Divas - Who cares?
Swagger v. Rusev, again, I would rather they found a way to move that to Summerslam. Put both of them into the IC Battle Royal, and have them feud it out in there.

I agree with pretty much everything said here. If Goldust and Stardust face off against Usos, I will definitely be rooting for Goldust and Stardust. I love the fact that Cody Rhodes pulls off every gimmick given to him with such efficiency, and I can imagine some really good comedy segments with them in the future. That being said, if there is going to be a feud between Stardust and Goldust, the chances of them winning the championships .. not so much.

I like Rusev's skill, and I have been a fan of Jack Swagger. I would want Swagger to win this and get some form of push, but Rusev's build is much too predictable and has been overdone. Khali, Umaga, Kozlov, etc. all have been through this and will probably finally lose to a guy like Cena.

AJ Lee is back! Paige, despite my wishes, had a pretty lackluster reign and AJ lee's character definitely draws more interest, which is pretty big considering nobody really cares about the Divas division. They should have a good feud, and honestly I'm just waiting for Charlotte to come to the main roster. She will probably be the most successful diva in WWE.

Poor BNB. Can't catch a break and the sad part is he was doing so well. Don't know how many months he will be sidelined for but I would seriously put him in my list as a legitimate royal rumble winner. As far as the IC title is concerned, I guess a good choice would be Dolph Ziggler. I would say Del Rio but people just don't get behind the guy. Kofi doesn't have the momentum Ziggler has right now. This would never happen, but I would love to see a surprise entrant like Kevin Steen or Prince Devitt come and win it. Won't ever happen, but would be really cool. Another person that comes to mind to win the IC title is Corey Graves, if he is cleared to compete.

Personally, I guess Cena was a failsafe option to win the MITB WWE WHC ladder match, but I still hate it. I would have loved if there was a surprise entrant in that match ... Y2J! Become the undisputed champ once again!
At Battleground Cena will probably retain.

Chris Jericho vs Bray Wyatt
I think Jericho should win at Battleground and they can give Wyatt a big victory at Summerslam

Paige vs AJ Lee vs Cameron vs Naomi for the divas championship

Luke Harper and Eric Rowan vs Usos for the tag titles
Wyatts win the tag titles and they go on to defend it against the Usos and Stardust and Goldust at Summerslam

Battle royal for the Intercontinental championship

Jack Swagger vs Rusev
Rusev takes out Swagger at Battleground, preferably beating him by pinfall rather than submission. Rusev then feuds with Sheamus over the US championship while Swagger's out. Sheamus could be the first superstar to defeat Rusev. Rusev defeats Sheamus in their rematch at NOC and then could probably bring back the European championship for the time being. Rusev and Sheamus can probably have a rematch at Hell in a Cell and then the two can be involved in the traditional survivor series tag team match. Swagger returns for Survivor Series and is also a part of the tag match and then they reinstate their feud. It can go on until Elimination Chamber next year probably when Swagger dethrones Rusev, while Rusev can begin a major program for Wrestlemania and Swagger can have a strong reign as US champ.

Roman Reigns vs John Cena vs Kane vs Randy Orton

As much as I'd love to see Rollins vs Ambrose at Battleground, I think they should save it for Summerslam and they can have three straight PPV matches, ending with a Hell in a Cell match at Hell in a Cell. They can also have a traditional Survivor Series tag match at the Survivor Series so that the PPV will once again be considered as one of the 4 major PPVs of the year.

Rollins V Ambrose confirmed via WWE website. This just upped the interest in Battleground for me big time. I anticipate a great match between the two, but fully expect a dirty win for Rollins with interference from the Authority, leading to a rematch at Summerslam with hopefully no interfering.

Battleground is actually shaping up this year. I really like the Ambrose/Rollins match being added as mentioned by the poster above. Ambrose needs to get a win, and continue the feud, but I have a feeling Rollins will get the dirty win. THe title match is probably a given with Cena winning I am sure. The match I am most interested in is Jericho vs Wyatt. I am curious to see the direction they go with this feud. All in all should be a good ppv.

This could be a decent ppv and they need to save some of the matches for summerslam to bring in viewers and I understand tha try need to get the ratings up but try to save the big matches for later on, I would make this my card.

1) Aj Lee (c) Vs Paige
Stays te same.

2) Goldust & Stardust Vs Rybaxle
Number 1 Contenders Match. Have this go to a double count out or something and at summerslam have the champs defend in a 4 corners match.

3) Chris Jericho Vs The Miz
Save this Match for Battleground and have Jericho Vs Wyatt at summerslam

4) Rusev Vs Jack Swagger
Have this on the card and have both men counted out to further the storyline at least.

5) Sheamus (C) Vs Bray Wyatt
United States Title Match. This will be a test for Sheamus it will be a good match and bray wins by DQ after jericho and the miz interfere, I know it sounds stupid but it could work.

6) Intercontinetal Title Battle Royal Match.
The final 4 comes down to Cesaro, Ziggler, Rollins & Ambrose. Have the last two in the battle royal and thy enliminate each other and Cesaro wins the gold.

7) The USO (C) Vs The Wyatt Family.
Same as before but I'm torn here I don't know who I'd like to walk away with the gold.

8) John Cena (C) Vs Randy Ortan Vs Roman Reigns Vs Kane
Stays the same with cena getting the pin on Kane and after the match Lesner comes out and hits a massive F5 on Cena.

That's my card and even though it's not a massive change I think this would be better saving some big money matches for Summerslam.

I believe this will be a better PPV than last year's Battleground and MITB. I like how creative did long term booking getting some of these matches together like Usos/Harper and Rowan and got even more long term booking with feuds being tied within each other like the Fatal Four Way for the WWE WHC.

My biggest worry is they focus too much on trying to make certain people in the feud look strong vs. having clean finishes.

Taking an early stab at predictions for this PPV:

1. Jack Swagger v Rusev
Draw.
Have a feeling that this one might end in count-out so that they can have a rematch at SummerSlam. If not, I imagine Rusev will go over Swagger but with Swagger kept strong.

2. The Uso's(c) v The Wyatt's
This one is a bit harder to predict, but I'm going with The Wyatt's to pick up the win.

3. 20-Man Battle Royal for the Intercontinental Championship
Ziggler is the most over in this match but I doubt will win it. The Miz could pick up the win in order to give him some relevance. But I think the favourite has to be Cesaro.

4. Bray Wyatt v Chris Jericho
Jericho simply has to go over here to make him look like a credible threat, with Wyatt picking up the wins in their (likely) future two matches.

5. Dean Ambrose v Seth Rollins
Could easily go either way, but I'm going with Rollins to pick up the win by cheating.

6. AJ Lee v Paige
Playing hot potato with the title makes no sense. AJ Lee to win and Paige to turn heel.

7. John Cena(c) v Randy Orton v Kane v Roman Reigns
While Reigns will be kept strong and it will most likely be Kane to be pinned, John Cena will win this and go on to face Brock Lesnar for the title at SummerSlam.

Average ppv with plenty of build for Summerslam. Highlights include The Uses, Cena's win, Ambrose and Rollins scuffling.

Surprise of the night was the clean pin on Bray by Jericho. Let's see if the idiot mark masses complain about Jericho burying Bray.

Aj and Paige were trying to do things outside of their skill level and almost hurt each other. That match was dangerous.

I wanted Dolph to win the IC, but Miz is a great mid card heel.

An okay PPV.

The match of the night unfortunately for me is the Usos vs Wyatt's match -- 8.5/10

The Jack Swagger vs Rusev's match was worth mentioning. Though there are many here who hated Rusev, he seems to be able to work well with his opponents. -- 6.5/10

I'm disappointed that Rollins vs Ambrose's match did not take place. Rollins might be hiding his injury. He was limping a little during the scuffle.

The highlight of the Battle Royal is the Sheamus vs Dolph's segment. I hate how the Mist won the title. I've no idea what angle the WWE is thinking or planning for Mist.

Bray vs. Jericho match was good. One of Bray's better match in recent times. -- 7/10

The fatal four-way match between John Cena, Randy Orton, Kane and Roman Reigns was good too. Roman Reigns has got a lot to learn. He is the weakest in the match. -- 7.5/10.

Not meaning to be overly critical, but I didn't enjoy this PPV that much, sadly. Not going to dump all over it as there were a few parts I enjoyed, but...meh.

Didn't see the kickoff show as we don't get it over here, but I didn't care for either of the matches anyway.

I enjoyed the tag-team match a lot. Very much expected to see Harper and Rowan finally go over, but for whatever reason they're sticking with The Usos. That's cool, I like them. I'm entertained by the matches they have, but the feud as a whole could do with finishing either now, or very soon. Rematch after rematch after rematch is becoming tiresome. I'm ready to see some different tag teams get in on the action.

Very disappointed we didn't get a full match between Ambrose and Rollins, but I see the bigger picture, I get it. I did like the various backstage segments. We don't get nearly as many backstage fights as we used to, so anytime we see some I think it's a good thing. It's made me hungry for a hell of a match at Summerslam though.

Had high hopes for Paige and AJ, but for me it just didn't click. There were multiple botches in the match, trying to work themselves over the top rope looked to be the worst one. They were actually given some time to put on a decent match by the WWE which is a rare commodity in the Divas division, but it just fell flat IMO. I'd like a rematch at Summerslam to let them redeem themselves, and hopefully lead to a full Paige heel turn. Didn't really get the whole Paige shouting at AJ throughout the match basically encouraging her to do better. Didn't work for me.

Swagger V Rusev. Enjoyed the pre-match stuff more than the actual match. I'm a little surprised they went as far as to allow Lana to talk about the plane crash, but it wasn't a particularly hot crowd last night, so I don't think they were necessarily wrong to test the waters with it. Lana's reaction to Swagger hitting the pole that knocked him out was gold. :D

Jericho V Wyatt was a really good match. I don't know whether "surprised" is the right word for seeing Jericho going over as I fully expected something to lead to a Summerslam rematch, but until it actually happened I wasn't sure where they'd go. Really good match, and I'm hopeful this feud will get Bray back on the right path again towards main event status.

I disagree with people who call The Miz a good heel because he's disliked. I don't like him because I'm not entertained by him, not one iota. Sorry Miz fans or even indifferent fans, I hated this outcome, that's my opinion.

I found it hard to get into the main event due to everyone and their mother knowing the Lesnar plan going forward. There were some nice spots, though the cameramen and TV directors managing to almost miss not one, not two, but three Reigns running apron dropkicks was a fail. Reigns spearing Orton through the barricade was a nice spot that I'll never get tired of. False finish after false finish gave me a couple of split seconds of hope, but anything other than a Cena win would have been the upset of the century. I am looking forward to Lesnar's imminent return.

I wasn't expecting too much out of Battleground, and speaking personally, I didn't get much. I've seen worse though, so this isn't me trashing it completely. :D

For a pre major ppv event that is not considered one of the bigger b shows like elimination chamber, I though Battleground delivered. The first hour of the show was really good with the match of the night between the Usos and Wyatts, the beginning of the Rollins/Ambrose backstage segments that did what I hoped for and pushed the match back to SummerSlam and the Divas title match which was a good contest. Outside of that first hour the remaining show was average, but I liked that the IC battle royal had a big feel to it. Hopefully that big feel can continue to follow the IC strap. I also liked the handling of the Swagger/Rusev match. Swagger dominating and the count out finish going down as it did begs this feud to continue with some sort of stipulation match. WWE Title match was better than average but all too predictable. From Kane and Orton falling apart to Reigns having multiple spots where he had the title one to Cena ultimately winning. All of that was predictable.... but well executed. In the end Battleground did a great job of building towards SummerSlam and that was its job all along.

I ended up being a bit disappointed in this show. While I did not go into it with very high expectations, the card looked better on paper than it ended up being.

Adam Rose VS Fandango
Why would this not get a match on the main card? First of all they need to stop this crap of adding unadvertised matches at the last second. Also, since we did not get one of the matches that actually WAS advertised, this could have gotten bumped to the main card.

Cameron VS Naomi
Who the hell cares? Glad it remained part of the pre-show.

Usos VS Wyatts - Tag Team Championship match
This match got ruined by its result. The Wyatts should have won the last encounter, and they should have won this one. It is bogus that The Usos still have the belts, let alone having ever won them in the first place. What could have gone down as a good match was tarnished by the end result. It more or less set the pace for the rest of the night and was an ok opener.

AJ VS Paige - Divas Championship match
This was nowhere near what it could have been. One of the guys who watched with us at my PPV party hated it and whined the whole rest of the night about it. Another loved it because he likes both divas. I am in the middle. It wasn't awful, by divas standards it was good, but it could have been better. Being a fan of both divas I went into it with high standards, so that may be why I was a little disappointed with it. I'd say they are probably just saving the better quality match for Summerslam. They had this match too early.

Rusev VS Swagger
This surprised me. I didn't think Lana would talk about the plane crash and I also was pretty convinced Swagger would get the win. I'd doubt that this feud is over. The match was better than expected, nothing to write home about though.

Dean Ambrose VS Seth Rollins
This "match" was highly disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I loved the backstage brawls we got. However, that should have gone on AFTER the actual match while Seth was bragging in an interview or something. If you advertise a match, the fans expect to see said match. Also, why didn't Rose VS Fandango get bumped to the main card when this match never actually happened? Stardust and Goldust could have had a match. Disappointing. Here's to hoping we get the real match at Summerslam.

Chris Jericho VS Bray Wyatt
Very shocked at the Jericho win. The match was good and I found it to be the second best of the night. There's no way this feud is over. Jericho had nothing to gain from winning, so I fully expect Bray to destroy him in some type of gimmick match at Summerslam for the rematch. Either way.... More please!

Intercontinental Championship Battle Royal
I was furious with the result to this match. ANYONE in that match would have been a better choice than Miz, even Bo Dallas would have been better. He does not deserve any type of championship push whatsoever and I cannot fathom what WWE sees in him. He should be in a speaking role only. The rest of the match wasn't bad and I liked Barrett's promo at the beginning. Just like the tag team match, it is tarnished by the end result. There's really no reason why Ziggler or Kofi couldn't have won with the excellent performances they had in the match. No, let's give the belt to a useless guy who sucks other than when he does promos. Shame on you, WWE.

John Cena VS Kane VS Randy Orton VS Roman Reigns - World Heavyweight Championship match
This was the best match of the night and while predictable, I felt that it saved this from being a much worse show. The Cena haters will surely all come post their whiny rants regarding the retention, but it made sense for him to retain. The only other one in the match who could have won would have been Roman and it's too early for him to win the belt. The tension between Orton and Kane got interesting although I never thought either of them were winning this.

Overall Thoughts
Battleground 2014 was a vast improvement over last year's edition, but this remains a garbage PPV brand. If you missed out on this show, you truly missed nothing. Had I not been a member of the WWE Network then I never would have ordered this show. I would have been upset at paying the full price for a PPV the traditional way had I done so, let me tell you. It served its purpose, it was something to watch with friends on a sunday and it set up some potential matches for Summerslam.... but some of the match results were bad decisions, several matches did not live up to expectations, a match that had a ton of potential never even fully took place, and as a whole this card failed to deliver. Not the worst of the year, but it's a bottom tier so far for 2014's PPV's and a step down from the last string of shows just barely being better than the Royal Rumble was. I am 100% convinced Summerslam will be far better.

1. Wrestlemania 30
2. Money In the Bank 2014
3. Extreme Rules 2014
4. Payback 2014
5. Elimination Chamber 2014
6. Battleground 2014
7. Royal Rumble 2014

Extremely disappointed.

For those of you in the USA, the $9.99 a month hit on the network means that a below-par PPV isn't too much of a cross to bear. However for the rest of the world, the $29.90 ($AUD) charged for what was essentially one solid match (obviously the always reliable pairing of the Usos v Wyatts) and a card full of disappointment and filler, left a pretty sour taste.

I am getting pretty sick of these North American wrestling brands brandishing the word "world" into their promotion names, when the international viewership is by large an afterthought to domestic presentation... a conversation for another time I think however.

I really think WWE dropped the ball with what could have been an amazing end to an otherwise bland PPV. Heymans absence by Cesaro's side on RAW (and subsequently Battleground also), along with his mentioning of a "Plan C", laid the groundwork to what I thought would have been a pretty decent swerve.

Cena predictably wins the Fatal 4-Way, after Orton, Kane & Reigns have made their way backstage, Lesnar's music hits. He proceeds to lay waste to an already battered Cena, F5 and leaves him unconscious in the ring.

Rollins' music hits and he tears towards the ring, referee in tow, and cashes in on Cena.

Then we have the perfect angle for Cena vs Lesnar at SummerSlam, without the pressure of the title, WHICH Lesnar is predictably going to drop around Night of Champions due to his schedule anyway. Would also have set up nicely for an all-Shield Triple Threat for the title, which to my mind would be a HUGE money draw.

But no, instead the title picture will tick along methodically and predictably...
Cena > Lesnar > Bryan > (Rollins cash-in sometime before WrestleMania) > Reigns...

...someone wake me around May 2015

Enjoyed the show. It was solid as I expected.

Usos vs Wyatts was waaay beyond what I thought. Great match, MOTN. No, the ending didn't ruin it, that's stupid. What next? Cry when Cena loses? They're over and the belts help them. Tag belts don't help the Wyatts. This was just a good match that entertained the hell out of of people.

Rollins/Ambrose not having a match wasn't predictable (isn't that what you guys like?) and they had a fun brawl that furthered the story. Wrestling has used this for years.

AJ/Paige, not as good as I thought it'd be. Then again, Paige is 21 and this is probably the highest profile they've been. AJ may have been rusty too. Plus both are scrawny, need a stronger base. Not awful though.

Rusev/Swagger, they've won me over with Swagger/Zeb fighting for 'merica. Solid.

Jericho/Wyatt, unpredictable Jericho win (thought that's what you guys liked) and a solid match. Makes perfect sense if they're continuing it. Wyatt will become more violent with the loss.

IC Battle Royal, WWE has gotten really good at these. I remember when they were the most boring thing. Basically 20 minutes of dudes hanging on the ropes. Now there's a bit of story, high spots, near eliminations, etc. Surprise ending (isn't that what you guys like?) with Miz winning. I forgot about him, so the ending worked. I was like "dang, Sheamus unifying, WHOO ZIGGLES, awww Miz". I don't mind Miz winning, he can get a decent reaction, IC title is about where he belongs and this looks like it's setting up a feud with Ziggler.

Fatal Fourway, predictable ending but that's not always bad. Good enough match.

The guy above me, I hate your idea BTW. Why do a big ending on a mid level PPV? What motivation would Lesnar have to face Cena if Cena doesn't have the strap? Do you really think Rollins is ready? Wouldn't Ambrose keep him from cashing in? Do you really think a triple threat shield right now is huge money? Why do you trust the dirt sheets on Lesnar's schedule? You basically sound like you're bummed because they didn't do exactly what you want. You have no idea where this is going. There are better ways to do what the WWE seems to want to do than what they did, but your idea isn't one of them.

Overall this was what I expected. A solid show with several good matches and moments that made me "ooo" and "ahhh". I usually don't care who wins, so none of that bothered me.
