Would You Give Silva A Rematch?

Dressler

Occasional Pre-Show
At the next UFC card (UFC 117: Silva vs Sonnen) the Main Event (in the title) is a Middleweight Championship fight between long time (and very cocky) Champ Anderson "The Spider" Silva vs Chael Sonnen. Although many believe that Anderson will whip Sonnen and completely destroy Sonnen, however I believe Sonnen will take Anderson to the floor and Knock him out. So if this happens, or if Sonnen wins by any other way he can, do you give Silva an automatic rematch? And if not why? Or are there certain circumstances for which he gets it?

In my opinion it all depends on how Anderson loses, if he gets knocked out in the first round and its an "easy" victory, then no I don't think he gets a direct rematch, however if this fight gets to the 4-5 rounds then yes I think he gets a rematch, especially if it goes to decision. Because he has been the Champ for 4 years (correct me if I'm wrong), I think if it goes the distance or close to it, he merits a rematch. He would also warrant a rematch fairly quickly regardless because he has been top dog for so long.

The only thing I see going against him in getting a rematch right away is Dana White, if Anderson loses quickly I don't think Dana even considers a rematch as Anderson is already out of favor with Dana, with that said that could also play into how long he'd have to wait even if he loses in the later rounds.

So what are your thoughts?

Would he "deserve" one? Yes. Will he get one? I don't think so.

I say he deserves one simply because he has more championship defenses than anyone in UFC history. No matter how he uses at UFC 117... that alone makes him deserving of an immediate rematch were he to lose that championship.

However, the reason why I don't think he'll get one is A) I think the UFC desperately wants him in the Light Heavyweight Division and if he lost the title, that would be enough for them to get him to make the permanent move there, and B) Vitor Belfort was promised the next shot at the title anyway, no matter what.

So, yeah.... Silva would definitely "deserve" one (if he wanted a rematch, which isn't even guaranteed he would), but I doubt it would ever come to fruition for the reasons stated above.

Even though he's out of favor with Dana, Dana knows that he's still a major draw despite his recent jackassery during fights. His talent across the board is almost unparalleled in MMA and he hasn't lost since entering the UFC. He'd almost be obligated to give him the rematch. That being said, I know that they've expressed interest in moving him to LHW, but as I said on another thread, I think this is a bad move. Black House fighters have been pretty vocal about their refusal to fight one another and two of the top ten LHW in that division are Black House fighters. It creates a whole different set of headaches for Dana that he could avoid by just giving Anderson a rematch and keeping him a MW.

JMT is correct, the fact that Silva has been champion for so long and defended the belt more then any other champion in history is grounds enough for him to get an immediate rematch. The problem is I don't think the UFC is even banking on Silva losing. They already have the next challenger set up and haven't even considered what should happen if the fight ends in controversial fashion. If this fight goes the distance and Sonnen wins or if it were to end in any sort of questionable ending then the UFC should set up a rematch but it wouldn't be until either the end of the year, or more likely next year and quiet frankly I don't think Anderson would have the patience to wait. We won't know until something happens and the fight is over but hopefully the fight ends with no controversies and the fight with Belfort against whoever wins goes as planned.

I have a distinct feeling that Silva won't be needing a rematch. Sonnen took shit talking to a whole different level and I think Anderson is going to make him pay for his xenophobic comments. SHOULD he lose, yes, I think he will get an immediate rematch unless there's more to this Dana-Anderson love-hate saga than we know.
