The Big Gunnzbowski

Damas y Caballeros...
One, A couple, or maybe ALL of these songs will haunt you for the rest of your life... Which is it?

These songs hit us and we ate them up! After awhile, we'd hear them, and we wanted to kill something. Which of these songs (if any) sets off your bloodlust?

Mine is definitely the Macarena. I grew up in a mostly Hispanic town, so we heard it EVERYWHERE! On the radio, at dances, parties, ANYWHERE there were speakers, we had to hear it! I HATE IT AND WANT IT DEAD!

Out of the songs you put up there, I would have to go with the Macarena. THe only reason it got popular was because of some stupi dance, and still played at parties right now. And I seriously think about going up to the person who's in charge of the music, knocking them out, and changing the song. I hate that song.

But there's one that's worse than the Macarena. How could you forget Barbie Girl? I wish I could forget that song, you're lucky. God that song is so annoying, and it sticks in your head too. And everytime I go over to my cousin's house, they play that song. You have no fucking idea how bad that is.

I have to make a write-in vote here.

Yes, every one of those choices you listed were terrificly terrible one-hit wonders. But in terms of song that hit fast, hit hard, and then dropped, two more come to mind.

My runner up - Aqua's annoying but catchy and rythmic "Barbie Girl." God, at the time that came out, my twin sisters were like 12, and that was the greatest thing ever to them. So I was subjected to the song constantly. And when you realize you're humming along, you just want to close your own head in the car door.

My winner - Baha Men and 'Who Let the Dogs Out." Just as culturally iconic as the Macarena, and in fact, whereas the Macarena has gone the way of the do-do, Who Let the Dogs Out is still a perfectly acceptable and repeated sports arena anthem. People are fan less humiliated to yell out "Whooo, whooo, whooo!" then they are to do the Macarena, which was the obvious inspiration for the Pepto Bismol dance.

I'd give the nod to Baha Men, with the Macarena close 2nd.

Probably because Barbie Girl wasn't a one hit wonder?

Doctor Jones, Turn back Time, Cartoon Heroes, Around the world, My Oh My, Candyman and Good Morning Sunshine...just off the top of my head.

So that's seven other singles I can think of off the top of my head, by a band that are annoying as heck, who I didn't like. Surely shows that Barbie Girl was not a one hit wonder.

Okie Dokie, Aqua was a one-hit wonder in the States. I never heard of ANY of those other songs. I guess they are a UK band?

According to me (and I only mention this because Luther spouted off about this band during the Rock Tournament), Kings of Leon are also a 1-hit wonder, because Sex on Fire just hit big here. I am only going by my immediate perspective.

In which case, Barbie Girl qualifies.

Who let the dogs out and the Macerena take it for me. Both songs were huge in their hay day and had their fans but I found both to be cringe worthy. Thoes two are the defenition of a fad and a gimmick and you almost were guarenteed that both groups(Los del Rio & Baha Men)who fade into obscurity living off royalty checks for their 1 and only hit.

The sad thing both still get recognized and are still immersed in our culture(who let the dogs out is played at hockey, football, and other sporting events, while the Macerena still is played in clubs, dances, and parties). Both sucked musical and lyrical wise and it's ashame that the Baha Men won a grammy for the crappy song(Best Dance Recording)and that the Macerena is the second longest #1 song on the Billboard 100 as well as being the best selling debut single of all time.

Well many bands are one hit wonders in some countries and not in others. Crash Test Dummies are the most used Canadian example, with their hit MMM MMM MMM in America was their only one. In Canada however they had countless hits. Aqua is the same way, they had a few hits in Canada even, but perhaps only the one in America. Aqua, I believe are Swedes were also huge in many European countries.

The Macarena from that list is my choice. I never liked the song, the dance was annoying, and it was the first big time I realized how horrible main stream can be. I also think a lot of people my age realized that, and the break off begun.

One hit wonder lists can be fun, but their standards can be poor. In reality, Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix were only one hit wonders. Think about that.

Kings of Leon have had many hits in the UK, but Sex on Fire is their most notable, and I'm guessing the only hit back in their homeland.

I'm going with the damn Crazy Frog, that was annoying as hell, the original ring tone was annoying but when it became a number one single I feared for the British public's intelligence. Seriously, I know its "gimmick" was because its annoying, but seriously, who the hell would have thought a guy doing a motor bike impression over the theme tune to Beverly Hills Cop would have been a number one hit? I sure as hell didn't.

Oh, and for the record, I'm British and have only ever heard of Barbie Girl.

I am going to go with my own and say "How Bizarre" by OMC. While I fully admit to finding it quite catchy, I can't still get over the fact that the lyrics sounded like they took fifteen minutes to write.

And, Aqua, who performed the song "Barbie Girl," is far from a one-hit wonder group. Sure, they may have only cracked the Top 40 (or Top of the Pops, as I think they call them in Britain if I remember correctly) once, but this Scandinavian group lit up dance charts before and after they found their mainstream success with the aforementioned "Barbie Girl."

I knew this would probably happen...haha. I was GOING to go with 10 choices, but that would have made alot of people confused... I SHOULD have made this multiple choice... And the reason I excluded "Barbie Girl" was because I still have nightmares about that song...lol. I tell you what... I'll REMAKE the poll and I'll add the songs that I excluded.

My arguement for the Baha Men is that I excluded it because it's STILL used today in the mainstream... ie, Sporting Events. By one hit wonder, I meant it was here and gone within a matter of a year or so... Hardly heard from again... I've got a few more songs that I'm going to add because I'm sure that you'll all agree and this time it WILL be multiple choice...

Before I even saw which songs were in the poll, Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cyrus came to mind. It was constantly playing on the radio when I was little, and I hated that song even then.

What Is Love is an awesome song, made even better by it's memorable use in Night at the Roxbury. That song and that movie are classics!
