Why not?

Should Tye Dillinger have been preferred over Apollo Crews for the call-up?

Gone. For. Good.
Apollo Crews debuted at NxT TakeOver: Brooklyn last year. He then faced the likes of Samoa Joe, Finn Balor and Baron Corbin in NxT.

He debuted on main roster the next night after Wrestlemania 32. He has had feuds with Social Outcasts (Ugh) Sheamus. The IC Title match with The Miz was lackluster enough to ignore it as a feud.

So this guy has a gimmick of smiling like always and hasn't made much of a connection with the crowd and still he is hotshotted to the main roster in under a year and also he gets a midcard title shot at Summerslam. No disrespect to his wrestling ability, But I would have rather kept him in NxT for a much long time.

Now see the wrestler in contrast: Another good wrestler, good mic skills, Amazing crowd connection, Unique Gimmick, Much Experience in wrestling and he's still in NxT for no good reason.

And his name is Tye Dillinger. I think that Tye should have been preferred over Apollo to get the main roster call-up.

What about you?

Dillinger is one of these guys who MIGHT be over if he was on the main roster, but there's no guarantee. He's over with the NXT crowd but, then again, the same can be said for guys like Bo Dallas and Adam Rose.

Dillinger is, for all intents and purposes, a jobber in NXT and there's no real reason to believe he'd be used for anything other than that on the main roster. While it's true that every wrestling company needs jobbers, I don't see Dillinger ever making it to the main roster to be used as anything but that.

I agree that Apollo Crews definitely should not have been called up to the main roster when he did, if at all. He was never even that over in NXT, please find me the clip where he outpops the likes of Finn Balor, Sami Zayn, Nakamura, or even Hideo Itami. It literally made no sense to me why they called him up and his main roster run has done little to change my mind about that.

As for Tye Dillinger, WWE is kinda on a hot streak when it comes to calling up acts that are extremely over and seeing that retained on the main roster (Balor, Enzo & Cass, Bayley) but I'm not entirely sure if he will fit that mold. I don't think I agree with Jack-Hammer's belief that he's solely just a jobber, but I will absolutely admit he hasn't really been presented as 'top level talent' on NXT. The beauty of NXT being different from RAW/SD though is that you can change perception without too much backlash. Hell, WWE has no problem dramatically changing perception on a dime anyway (look at Dolph pre and post 2016 brand extension). I feel like now is not the time to try it, but I certainly wouldn't be opposed to seeing Tye on the main roster by the time NXT Takeover: Orlando hits next April.
