The Brain

King Of The Ring
It’s time for the next installment in the manager series. Judging by the number of responses and votes more people cared to discuss Bobby Heenan more than Jimmy Hart. They may not bode well for this thread but I’ll give it a go anyway. This time we will discuss the Doctor of Style, Slick. Slick may not be as well known, or at least not as often mentioned, as Heenan and Hart but he too was around for many years during the Hulkamania era. Which of these guys do you most associate with the Slickster? I’ll include the Bossman and Akeem both individually and as a tag team.

My vote goes to the Big Bossman individually. I expect One Man Gang to be a popular vote but when asked to name one of Slick’s wrestlers Bossman is the first to enter my mind. I remember when the Bossman debuted in the summer of 1988. It was obvious he was going to be a major player and within only a couple months he laid out Hulk Hogan on the Brother Love Show. One Man Gang had a couple matches with Hogan and Savage but didn’t really have a feud with them. Bossman was the first of Slick’s guys to have a main event feud with Hogan. Slick was kind of venturing into Heenan territory by trying to take out Hogan. The feud went on and off for about eight months. It went through Survivor Series and the Royal Rumble before cooling off around mania so Hogan could regain the belt from Savage but picked up again when Hogan was champ. Slick was always around but looked at as a distant third behind Heenan and Hart. Bossman brought Slick to the big time.

As a special bonus here is the music video to Slick’s awesome entrance music.

I vaguley remember Slick. Thats not a knock on him, I just dont remember seeing much of him. When I think of Slick, Bossman/Akeem tag team comes to mind, they get my vote. I do remember him with One Man Gang and The Warlord as well.

Damn Brain, GREAT topics. I went with the Twin Towers. I didn't look at the choices but when I popped into the thread and saw Slick they were the first ones to pop into my mind. Akeem the African Dream and Bossman.

IMO Slick was very underrated. Man he would have been the PERFECT manager for Doom.

Yeah Brain, keep these threads coming, you're doing an awesome job. After looking through the list there and who to vote for, I'm just going to go with the Twin Towers. I do remember Bossman's feud with Hogan, a match that I've seen a couple times is a cool cage match between Bossman and Hogan. Thinking about it, Bossman made a pretty good heel when he first came to the WWF and I think they tried recreating the magic with the Mountie which well, not so much. I also agree, Slick was a distant 3rd compared to Jimmy Hart and the Brain.

While I haven't seen much of Slick, from what I have seen, he seems like a great manager. It's like Teddy Long if he had charisma. If Slick had stayed around, I'd have loved to have seen what he could have done with 90's superstars like Ahmed Johnson, or even joining the Nation of Domination.

Also, the "Jive Soul Bro" music video is classic. And I bet WWE will never air it again, or else it'll be the "GLAAD Situation" all over again, except with NAACP.

Wow, I'm surprised I was the only one to vote for Akeem because when I think of Slick, that's who I think of. Between Akeem's music, his walk to the ring and his debut vignet with Slick he's the first guy I think of when I think of Slick. To be honest I thought everybody thought that too but judging by this poll I guess not.

Had to go with One Man Gang/Akeem.

I don't think he managed anyone nearly as long as he did OMG/Akeem. And to be completely honest, aside from Warlord, Akeem, and Bossman I don't think I remember him spending any real time managing someone else.

BTW, totally looking forward to answering this question about Harvey Wippleman.

Akeem and later on (when he became Reverend Slick), Kamala. Butch Reed was the first guy he had that was truly 'his' (when he debuted in 1986, he was co-managing Fred Blassie's men). Big Bossman was with him for a while, but I think he did better on his own after he turned face.

Definitely Akeem "The African Dream." To be honest if he never had that gimmick and stuck with the One Man Gang character for his entire WWE run then he wouldn't be my choice, but as Akeem he was extremely memorable. From his debut to his mannerisms he was very entertaining and he and Slick played off of each other well.

The doctor of style slick!! Ahhh yes i remember him well. The one guy i associate him with is big boss man and OMG/akeem the African dream. Its really a tie for me on that one but when bossman debuted i knew he was gonna be a major player its too bad he was not given a push at least an Intercontinental title run.

Good ol slick looked like a cheap pimp didn't he?

Im going with Power and Glory...and i'm sure i'm the only one...lol. But I just remember how he used to say their names...It was HILARIOUS.
But I wish Slick was still around, I think he'd be a great manager for the Funkasaurus!

The Twin Towers, their combined feud with the Mega Powers is my defining memory of Slick, and I guess the fact the bigger star of the two went after Hogan no the champ Savage was an indicator of where things were heading.

Glad you put that vid in the opening post Brain, Slick had one of the best entrance themes ever. :D

This one was a little different for me, and I can see The One man Gang/Akeem was the most popular with the Bossman being close behind. I think of them collectively when I think of slick. Akeem is one of my favorite of the cartoon/sterotype characters of that time. He was just totally ridiculous with the arm movements coming to the ring, and even the exaggerated way he talked. He and bossman were not overly successful as a team, but they had a few good feuds, and when I see slick or hear jive soul bro I think of the twin towers

Oh man how I love Slick. Easily my favorite manager in wrestling history. Sure Heenan was great (and I love me some Heenan), but Slick was just so cool. First name that comes to mind is Akeem. A close second and third to Bossman and Power and Glory. But whenever I think of Akeem I think of Slick. Like Big Sexy said they played off each other so well and again if he would have stayed One Man Gang I would have likely went elsewhere with my vote. Akeem though was memorable, no matter how silly it was. Him and Slick were perfect together. Slick could do no wrong in my book though.
