Mask of the Phantasm is extremely good, and underrated. The earlier Batman: The Animated series work, including that movie, are some of the best animated programing I've ever seen.
Of course Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns was instrumental in repairing the Batman image after the cutesy campy 70s tv show in the eyes of comic fans, but Tim Burton's Batman movie did the same for the mainstream audience, and Batman: The Animated series is a continuation of that renaissance that showed a new generation what a real superhero looks like.
The Batman character still had a little bit of that campyness in the movies in the 90s, but Batman: The Animated Series removed that and portrayed him as a total badass, which in my opinion, lead to the Christopher Nolan reboot recently. In other words, if there's no Batman: The Animated Series, there's no Dark Knight.
...and that got a little more long winded than I meant it to, but there ya go.
