It's hard to say exactly what could happen because there are so many directions they could go. First off though, you have to remember that there's allegedly heat on both of them that's been building for a while that came to a head with them being sent home early from the European tour by officials. As a result, we don't really know the full consequences of the aftermath; for instance, we saw that the interfered in the men's Survivor Series match, like we all expected, but I think most of us expected them to cost the match rather than beat Shane up for a bit only to be then rousted by Shane using a steel chair. Did the alleged heat cause officials to lessen their role? Are they going to be working primarily as a tag team going forward and, if so, how much of a factor will they be in the division as a whole?
I haven't read anything else regarding problems with them backstage since, so that lends credence to the possibility that the whole thing came off like a much bigger deal in the dirt sheets than it actually was. At the same time, maybe it was also figured that whatever the issue, it wasn't big enough to warrant halting their push to that significant of a degree considering how much talent they bring to the table and everyone kissed and made up. I mean, if they were in as much trouble as you might expect, being sent home from the tour as the result of a series of backstage problems with them, you wouldn't expect that they'd have gone over New Day this past Tuesday. True, New Day was protected due to the chaos that's associated with lumberjack matches but that could also be claimed to protect Owens & Zayn if they'd lost; New Day has generally been the centerpiece of WWE's tag team division for the past few years so Owens & Zayn scoring the win, which was pretty clean under the circumstances, could be a positive sign.
As for the notion of Zayn turning on Owens resulting in a face turn for Owens, it's possible but not something I see happening. When you get right down to it, Kevin Owens has been solid gold as a heel, he's arguably been the best heel on the main roster since his arrival as he's just so good at being a manipulative, lying sociopath. Could a face turn work for him? Possibly so as a lot of fans want to cheer for Owens no matter what, which is the mentality for a lot of modern fans in that they'll cheer or boo for whomever they want regardless of what direction or alignment the company has in mind. The potential problem is that Owens is put into the role of a bland babyface, which WWE can do quite often when they feel like it; I mean, Charlotte Flair went from being the queen bitch of WWE, where she was vastly entertaining, to being Ric Flair's baby girl and as bland as the day is long.
Personally, I hope WWE leaves them be and continues with their push. They've both got the goods as characters, in the ring and on the mic, they're heel personas are fun to dislike and I like the way they play off each other. I get something of a Kevin Owens & Chris Jericho vibe from them because it's been well documented that they have great chemistry, that was widely known long before they came to WWE.
