Week 4: Tastycles -versus- Fratelli

Mr. TM

Throwing a tantrum
Should the WWE push talent from multiple ethnics groups to promote growth in those areas of the population?

Fratelli is the home debater, he gets to choose which side of the debate he is on first, but he has 24 hours.

Remember to read the rules. This thread is only for the debaters.

This round ends +2 hours after Friday 1:00 pm Pacific

good luck :)

The idea that WWE should promote people of different ethnicities, just because they are of that ethnicity is wrong. Not only is it wrong, it's racist and it should not be even entertained as an idea.

Tokenism doesn't affect other entertainment mediums and it doesn't affect sports either, so why should it affect wrestling, the mixture of the two? You don't see hispanic basketballers being picked so hispanic people come to watch them and you don't get Denzel Washington playing George Washington so black people watch a period drama, why should wrestling be the only thing that does? Why must wrestling be the black sheep of entertainment?

The thing is that there is no evidence whatsoever that pushing people from that demographic actually improves the ratings from that demographic. Smackdown is typically watched by hispanic people, everyone knows that, but the ratings of the show were completely unaffected by the championship reign of Rey Mysterio, him leaving the brand, him returning to the brand as IC champion. So not only is it discriminatory, it's a waste of time.

Even if it did work, pushing people from ethinc minorities for the sake of it is going to have an ultimately negative effect on the ratings. Minorities are that, minorities. If they made Chavo Guerrero world champion tomorrow, it would seriously hamper the ratings when the vast majority want to see the likes of Cena, HHH and HBK. Even if it doubled the hispanic audience, it would halve the overall audience.

Another thing is that the current wrestlers from minority groups are huge stereotypes: Kofi Kingston, being pushed now, is perhaps the best example. Pushing these guys is as likely to alienate the groups they come from as much as get them to tune in. How out of touch with black youths would the WWE look if they were pushing Cryme Tyme? Nobody in the world is like that, it's like a 1970s sitcom.

So there, I think I have given adequate reasoning for why pushing minority talent because they are minorities is wrong. Talent should be pushed on merit. If they are from a minority and popular, then all the better. I'd love there to be more Rey Mysterios, but giving someone like Primo a title because he's from Puerto Rico is backward tokenism and should be avoided.

Well, Fratelli must have posted porn, because he seems to have disappeared.

Tastycles will get all of my 5 points, and will probably mean another 25 points.
