New Match Official For WWE "Night Of Champions" PPV
by Matt Boone
Sep 09, 2010 You can officially pencil in a match between the Big Show and CM Punk for this year's WWE "Night Of Champions" pay-per view event.

Despite the PPV label, the Show-Punk match is not currently set for any kind of championship. Go figure.

go figure is right. with all these gimmick payperviews and NoC being one of the few gimmick ppvs i like, what is a match that has no title involved in it doing on the card? is wwe that stupid. this has bad booking written all over it

I find this funny, considering most were speculating that the 6 pack challenge was orginially booked due to the theme of the PPV being all championship matches and needing to find a way to get all the big money players from RAW into the show. Clearly that is not the case.

Surely the reason for this is that there is a lack of matches, there is only 1 tag team championship, and the womens title unification match. There is no ECW Championship this year, so there will only be 6 matches, most PPV's have 8, so they added this match, not that odd really.

Why is everyone reading so much into this? It's a fairly simple concept to grasp.
The point of Night of Champions is not to have every match be a title match, but to have every title defended. Oftentimes there are ppvs that some title is not defended. They don't always get the US and IC title in, almost never seem to have the Diva's and Women's title in, and lately haven't even always had the tag titles defended. Obviously the world titles make every show.
Now in past years, this was no big deal as there 8-9 titles around so the whole card could be comprised of championship matches. However, as some have been combined or just now defunct such as the ECW title we are down to just the 2 world titles, tag titles, 2 midcards, and 2 women's. Obviously the women's are being unified so that leaves for 6 matches which is not quite enough to fill a ppv card. As such, expect to see at least 1-2 non title matches.
If they do go through with the unification of all titles then there will only be about 4-5 championships after Wrestlemania depending on whether they decide to keep both midcards and keep one as a Television title of sorts or just make some incarnation of a TV title. If that is the case, then I don't think this ppv will be around next year because it's pretty easy to get 4-5 championships on each show so there will be no need for NoC.

Hopefully this has cleared things up.

Adding a #1 Contender's stipulation would easily remedy just how dumb this move is. If the gimmick for the show reads "Night Of Champions" then you'd think that would mean the show is about champions and championships. Having these guys fight it for an opportunity for the title would make a lot more sense to the theme of the show. Even if in the end, that shot is thrown off in favor of the Kane/'Taker feud.

Starchild, i think u r absolutely right, but i think b/c NoC has been all titles since its inception, peple r kinda ticked off at the fact of a match with no title on the line is going to take place n a ppv thats suppsed to be all titles, all the time!!!!

As Starchild said the idea of the PPV is that every title be defended, not every match being a championship match. Now in the past this has never been a problem as they had two divas titles, two tag titles and the ECW title which made more than enough titles to fill up a PPV card but now with only one divas title and one tag title we are down to six titles and a six match PPV isn't really enough (especially when one is a divas match). On top of all of that these two are way too important to leave off a PPV and they have been fueding so this match makes perfect sense, if it is really that much of a problem then there is a simple solution make it a No 1 contenders match.

It basically means Night of Champions will devolve into another of the random "gimmick" PPV's where only half of the matches follow the gimmick because otherwise we would be stuck with a 4 match card if/when every title is unified. I'm not a big fan of having non-title matches at Night of Champions either, but it's a small price to pay if WWE wants to have undisputed champions for every division (world, midcard, divas, tag team).

Now Night of Chgampions is a paperview where all titles are on the line. Nowhere does it say that there can't be other type of matches. Plus considering that you lose a match due to the unification divas match the card right now is really pathetic. In addition the the Punk/SHow mathc I would probaly gurentee Mysterio VS Del Rio for the night

All titles should be defended on every ppv. With a few grudge matches. When some of the titles aren't defended on a ppv then it shows the lack of prestige the title now has.

It more helps the Show/Punk feud by almost implying that the feud and issues between the two are so intense that either Punk or Show demanded the match take place at the PPV. It would havebeen awesome to see Punk bust into Teddy's office and demand that the match be on the PPV and the bantering back and forth of Punk and Teddy with Long claiming it's "an all title match show" with Punk constantly screamng back that he doesn't care until teddy just gives in just to get Punk to leave. They missed an oppurtunity to explain why a non title match is added to a supposedly "All Title Match" PPV.

Yes, I agree with this. The added single match may be due to the lack of titles or the missing ECW championship.

They have to fill the card but with so little titles left, they have to find some other way to do it, right?

What sort of prestige does the Divas' Title have? That's why they're unifying it. Or the US Title, even, at this point? They're heading towards unifying all the titles, so this is probably the last NOC PPV.

Fella the ultimate underdog is injured so your guarantee is wrong and i actually have no idea what the storyline for punk and show is supposed to be and i'm not interested really so i expect this match to kick off the ppv due to no title being on the line or come on second
