This just popped into my head a few minutes ago, and I figure I'd test it out here. Here's how it's done, I give you a game and an era, and you tell me if it was the best game, or if it wasnt the best game. Lets get started.

"Super Mario Sunshine" was the best Mario game to come out between the years of 2000-2009

This game was great. Being one of Nintendo's first Mario releases in this era, they certainly didnt disappoint. They took advantage of the Gamecube and what it had to offer, utilizing just about every button on it's controller in the game. However, this game was also cool because you could go to different area's of "Delfino Plaza" and have many different "Stages" to play from. There was an area in:

The Town Square
The Dock
The Beach
The Pier
On A Roof
The Sun (You had to adjust your camera so you were looking at the sun)

But besides that, there were other "Mini-Games" that you could play by going down pipes, and crashing through walls. There were also different updates for "Flood." He was your partner in this game, he is like a hose that Mario carries on his back, and he is essential to this game. His modes were:

Straight-Fire
Hover
Super-Jump
Turbo-Boost

All of these were essential to the game as well. There were also various cut-scenes between the Antagonists, and the Protagonists in the game. Even after you beat Bowser and save Peach, there is still a lot to do before Delfino Plaza is returned to the beautiful sunny place it once was.

So was "Super Mario Sunshine" the best Mario game to be released between the years of 2000-2009?

False.

Don't get me wrong; I love Super Mario Sunshine. It was gorgeous, chock full of scenery porn, great challenges, and tons of fun, but it also had its fair share of problems. Yoshi seemed like an afterthought with his Super Drowning Skills, some of the Shines required counterintuitive methods and were almost impossible to get without a guide, and there were some who just hated the whole FLUDD mechanic. And that damn watermelon level. And the full voice acting that made Bowser sound goofy. I liked it, but most did not.

However, in 2007, Super Mario Galaxy was released, and was a return to the classic platforming action of Super Mario 64 - with a twist. galaxy is widely regarded as THE example of how to change an old formula into something unique. The level design, music, mechanics, and feel of the game are all universally praised. The stars aren't stupidly hidden, the story is more serious and returns to the classic dialogue box format, the level design is unique and ingenious, and most of all EVERYTHING works. There are no major hiccups like in Sunshine.

So no, Sunshine is not the best Mario game of last decade. Galaxy surpasses it in every way by just being better.

False

Super Mario Galaxy was and you'd be a fool to say that Sunshine was better than Galaxy, pretty much for the reasons Doc listed.

With regards to Sunshine Nintendo did disappoint at the time, many people were rightly pissed off with FLUDD, and it took me the second time of playing through the game to appreciate it (and I'm easily the biggest Mario mark on the forum). It's a game that Mario fans enjoy in retrospect but at the time it was just far too gimmicky. Heck even NSMB is better.

Super Mario Galaxy would like to have a word with you.

I literally can not think of one thing that would be considered better in Sunshine than in Galaxy, by traditional standards. It was a gimmick game. Nobody *loves* a gimmick.
