Tournaments Suck

Fuck erbody but me
Everyday I'm seeing more and more people suggesting we have a tournament of some sort for just about any situation. Punk is leaving with the title? Let's have a tournament to crown the new champion! Back when Edge was injured during his Tag Title reign with Jericho, there were tons of people suggesting that we have a tournament to crown new champions. Even remember seeing one person suggest we have a 16 team tournament. That's stupidity on a whole new level. Oh and I'd be a fool not to acknowledge those who constantly clamor for the King of the Ring tournament to make it's triumphant return. You know, the tournament that has been meaningless since like 2002 at best?

So I have to ask, what is your obsession with tournaments? Having a series of back to back to back 5 minute shit matches isn't an appealing concept to me. Nor is watching the crowd slowly lose interest after seeing the same people come out over and over again, to the point that they couldn't care less when the winner is finally crowned.

I suppose that they aren't all bad if they are spread out over a period of time rather than a one night thing. Most will clamor for them because they want to see more actual "wrestling" as most dipshits like to put it. Color me stupid, but I prefer title wins and accomplishments to come from actual stories. Not watching a series of bad matches culminate in a forgettable title match. Remember the Gold Rush tournament? The only thing we actually got out of that was a weak Kane/Edge feud, and even that didn't start until afterward. I think Edge won that tourny but I can't remember who the champion was for the life of me.

So who is with me? Who is against me? Will I even come back into this thread after you guys ruin it with your inability to spell or read comprehensively? Stay tuned.

The last King of the ring that was any good was the one that Edge won, but that was only good because its the event where Kurt Angle really came into his own and his match with Shane O'Mac. That was the last time a tournament really benefitted anyone, Edge for the win, Kurt for looking like a machine, and I wouldnt even call myself a Kurt Angle fan.

The tag title tournament for the new belts on Smackdown wasnt bad, but that only made sense because it was a new belt and loads of people who werent normally tag teamers were in it. Also, coincedence maybe, Edge and Angle were in the finals again.

These days they suck, theres loads of them, theres usually no real storylines with them, all done in about 2 weeks and the winner is usually known from the start. It's like Wimbledon but worse.

I definately agree. There is nothing worse in entertainment than trying to make it more sporty. Now, before some asshole shits on me, I don't mean less in ring time. I mean like being silly and having 100% clean matches, or having a win/loss standings, or having tournaments. If I want to watch a "sport" where 90% of the matches/games suck and have no drama and are anti-climatic, I'll go watch a real sport. Pro wrestling is athletic theater. It should be emotion driven.

One of the worst wrestlemania's is mania 4. Yea yea it has Savage and Dibiase and all that shit, but watch the first 3 hours. It's literally 14 straight 6 minute matches that are all basically the same. I used to have like a "23 days of Wrestlemania" where I'd watch all 20-whatever up until that years. Mania 4 and 5 are the hardest because they both have about 15 seven minute matches and they're back to back. So I'd sit through about 9 hours of punch/kick.

Instead of a tournament, a battle royal or a multi-man elimination match is better.

Tournaments are njice to have as a rarity in wrestling, but can be overdone, ask TNA (or iMPACT Wrestling). TNA has a tournament about every month and a half to the point where it is pretty ridiculous.

Also the last to King of the Rings did nothing to benefit the wrestlers who won them. Regal was just the lower-mid card guy again after he won it during his RAW GM tenure and Sheamus in fact went a losing streak and became John Morrison's bitch. There was even a point where Santino invited him to a tea party in Manchester.

So, in closing the concept of a tournament is slightly dead but can still be done right.
