I look at what the papers said in August

So lads and lasses lets raise a glass to the mighty toon army!
Newcastle United:- With the season beginning this week Newcastle are without a new owner or a permanent manager. Theyve lost Sebastien Bassong, Obafemi Martins and Michael Owen this summer while bringing in not a single new face. Their head coach has taken charge of fewer than 15 matches as a manager, and yet bookies and pundits alike are tipping them for promotion at the first time of asking. Given how little progress the club has made over the summer, and the scarring the squad would have taken after relegation its unreasonable to expect automatic success. Hughton is not equipped as a manager to get the side even close to the top six, and in truth the squad is hardly in the best shape either. The fans for once might accept a mid-table finish, as they finally abandon their ridiculously ambitious demands.

Newcastle United
Caretaker manager Chris Hughton
One to watch Nile Ranger, 18
The club seemingly no one wants to own, manage or take a relegation-related pay-cut for. The supporters will remain loyal and their team is sure to draw crowds to every ground they visit. Unfortunately that may owe more to morbid curiosity than the talent on show.
Prediction Mid-table mediocrity

NEWCASTLE UNITED
Everyone must be tired of the story that Newcastle United are falling apart. In a desperate attempt to sell the club as soon as possible, owner and president Mike Ashley cfabricio-coloccini-001ompletely gave up his work in the team like hiring a full-time manager (Alan Shearer is on the waiting list) or signing some new players to boost the team in Championship campaign. Caretaker manager Chris Hughton ris working with a blindfold, as he doesnt know if any of his players will be sold or appear on training. Precisely that is what happened with Obafemi Martins this season, who moved to Wolfsburg for 9 million pounds and his coach had no idea about it. Sebastian Bassong (Tottenham) followed the steps of Martins and Michael Owen (Manchester United) a while Habib Beye (Hull), Nicky Butt and Mark Viduka (Portsmouth) are at the door.
Not knowing which of the players will be at his disposal Hughton has nothing to hope for on the start of Championship season. This chaos will cost the club dearly, as even if someone buys the club, it will be too late to make up for what they missed in the meantime. This is definitely the season when popular Magpies, as a really serious English club will aim to survive, believe it or not. As the breaking news is that Ashley will trust the bench with David OLeary, my message to them is: Get used to playing in Championship, as you wont get out of it soon
Tip: 15. place
