"This Is Wrestling!"

TELL ME YOU DID NOT JUST SAY THAT!
A chant one would usually find at an ROH or PWG show has now infiltrated the WWE for the first time (at least as far as I remember, correct me if I'm wrong) through it's NXT system. Chanted during REvolution's final two stellar matches, I found this to be a nice change of pace from the usual standard "This Is Awesome!" chant.

To me "This Is Awesome" has become beyond stale and is often chanted undeservedly when a match is simply just good. Fans have become conditioned to start chanting this at the slightest hint of a match going up to the next level.

I'm not saying it's wrong to show your appreciation for a match that you like, but I'd love if the fans would throw in a "This Is Wrestling!" chant during a good match on Raw, Smackdown, or a PPV. If not for that then do it to get under Vince's skin. "THIS IS SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT DAMNIT!"

I'm not advocating "This Is Awesome" to go away, just switch it up a little bit and stick it to Vince at the same time.

I see the point that it's been overused but some reaction is always better than none & I still prefer "This Is Awesome!" to many other chants. Even "CM Punk" chants are better than nothing & that is easily the most annoying/irritating chant right now.

At least when the crowd is chanting something is better than silence. I rather here "You can wrestle" than the chirping of crickets out side of the arena.

I could see people chanting "this is wrestling" but it does not flow off the tongue too well when you compare it to "this is awesome."

One, Vince has zero to do with NXT. Triple H has said this during his conference calls. Mike Johnson asked him during the last one if Vince watched and he honestly said, "no, he doesn't, but he knows what is going on".

Two, NXT appeals to the smark audience. It started mainly as an Internet show. It moved to the network but the live crowd is very "in-tune" with what's going on in wrestling. E.g. look at the pops that Finn Balor and Kevin Owens got. The fans at Full Sail knew fucking full well who they were. The pop Owens got for his signature moves were because people didn't expect to see him use them.

Three, I HATE the "This is Wrestling" chant. I have always hated it. You're stating the obvious. I get the context of it, "this is wrestling, and what the other guys are doing isn't". I think the chant actually might have started IN ROH, but I still hate when the fans chant it. Don't chant that. Chant the promotions initials, it has much more meaning and it's showing a lot more gratitude than, "This is Wrestling" when it's obviously fucking wrestling. "This is Wrestling" is also one of ROH's slogans which I'm not a fan of. Much prefer, "Creating Excellence".

Yo Saga, your first two paragraphs seem to state the obvious as well. Don't try to educate me on my favourite show. I love NXT. Did I say Vince had anything to do with NXT? I just want people to chant that on the main shows. Just makes me dream of Vince's reaction when he hears that.

It's weird cause it usually pisses me off too when I hear "This is Wrestling" chants but at REvolution it just seemed different to me. For me the meaning behind those "This is Wrestling" chants at REvolution was the crowd saying this is how wrestling should be presented. Great action combined great storytelling leading to a satisfying payoff. As opposed to the dog shit storytelling on the main roster.

Anyone know the origins of the "This is Awesome" chants? It's been around since at least the early 00's when I started watching. Can anyone remember any earlier instances than that?

In my selfish perfect wrestling vision, the only things the fans would chant would be the wrestlers names. Keep it simple. The problem WWE has though is they have a hard time making you root for most baby faces with their awful writing. Which is why the Sami Zayn story was so refreshing and great. You genuinely care about him, you wanna root for him, you wanna chant his name.
