This Is Awesome

The Phenom of WZ
It used to be that when the audience used the “this is awesome” chant, it was actually for either a really good segment or for a great classic match. I remember the first time I heard that chant used on WWE programming; it was for the Undertaker/HBK match at WM 25. That match was definitely a fitting occasion to use the chant. After that, for a long time, whenever the live audience would use that chant, it was warranted. Now, however, I feel as though the live audience uses it whenever they get anything that’s even somewhat entertaining. Lately, the chant hasn’t been used for anything near worthy of being called great.

What does that say about the current WWE product? Is it that the live audience is using the chant more and more because it’s become a popular chant or is it that the live audience is using the chant more often because the WWE product is becoming less and less entertaining? Let me know your opinions.

A lot of popular chants like that have become overly used. According to some people around here, Reigns can't have a great match ever, but he's gotten that chant multiple times. Oh wait, he's being carried

But seriously, the first match Goldust had after coming back, he got got the "you still got it!" chants in literally less than a minute. He did the equivalent to a rest hold and running the ropes and the chant started. It was definitive proof that some chants are done simply because they're commonplace.

Like Fire Marshall Bill said, it's just become one of those common place happenings. Some fans chant because they feel it's awesome, some do because others are doing it and some chant just for the sheer sake of it. Sometimes, there's no reason or rhyme for why the live audience does some of the things they do; for instance, Bray Wyatt is great on the mic but even he gets the "What?" treatment sometimes. Also, I can't curse the day enough that Steve Austin introduced that damn thing as it may be the single most annoying thing I've ever heard out of a wrestling audience.

As far as the "This Is Awesome" chant, doesn't really bother me. Hell, considering how much bitching seems to go on about any and every little thing that goes on in WWE, it's refreshing to hear positive feedback for a change.

I reckon WWE Universe still have some conscience about where to use what chants. Talking about the latest, WWE universe changed "Thank you Taker" After The Undertaker's loss at Hell in a Cell against Brock Lesnar. I didn't expect that, possibly not even the WWE creative. Sometimes it's really nice of the WWE universe

Try watching an NXT show. I'm not saying the show itself is bad, but the stupidity of the crowd can be jarring at times. Continuous chants throughout the show, and when the chants don't catch on is where you really hear the rednecks trying to start another chant.

Its just fans and chants, even Eva Marie got "Eva's learning" on NXT because she is not so atrocius in ring now...

I kinda like "This is awesome" because it shows that the audience is entertained and thats what it mathers the most. Never trully understanded "What" chant. Its just stupid chant to interupt some promo.

What does that say about the current WWE product?

Says the same thing as every other source of overkill used in media broadcasting today.

On ESPN, the words 'Breaking News' flashes across the screen every few seconds, whether the subject is the death of a major sports figure or the US Davis Cup team changing the emblem on their official leisure shirts.

On any network's pro football broadcasts, the capitalized words 'Score Update' appears as we watch one team's total change from 6 to 7 because someone kicked an extra point.

Fans like to mimic chants.....and everything that used to be 'good' is now 'great' ......so we see this in WWE, too.

Isn't that positively, absolutely awesome?

I in general don't like most chants..I don't mind if the time calls for it, but I remember going to Raw and some people being absolutely ridiculous.

Hey, I don't mind the This is Awesome chant, probably the only chant I don't mind. A lot of the times when it's used, the match or moment IS awesome. They really only break this out for the best segment of the night. You rarely hear two This is Awesome chants in the same night.

Plus, fans nowadays sit on their hands so much if they didn't chant shit you'd think the wrestlers were competing in an empty arena. Back in the day, maybe they didn't need the chant because fans went nuts for everything, but today? Unless you're in Chicago, Philly, New York, or Toronto the fans are dead.

At this point, we're lucky if WWE provides 1 match per 3-hour RAW worthy of the "This is Awesome" chant.

And there is maybe 1 time per month where a "moment" deserves it.

There are no surprise appearances (outside of the Dudley Boys' return)... very rarely a heel/face turn that is "amazing" (Seth Rollins, that's really it over the last year or so)...

The "dumbing down" of the chant is a direct result of fans desperate to make their experience feel worth the insane price of the ticket. Because if you go through an entire show with nothing to chant it for, you feel as though you wasted your time and money.

Fans use to cheer or boo because you had your fan favorites and the ones that were hated but today it's just fans trying to be the show. Some chants are fine every once in a while but constantly doing it just makes me turn the channel. And then fans complain that the WWE lowered the crowd noise or altered it.

I totally like "This is Awesome" chants because most of the times i also feel that the moment is truly awesome....... And i really dislike the "What" chants!

At worst, the "THIS IS AWESOME" Chants pop up for "good" content, the Smarks definitely spread the chant out though, so we hear it in... "good" and not Awesome segments now, but hey, it's not as bad as WHAT!? or Boring, which Literally do ruin the show for other's. Hey, you paid for a ticket, chant anything that's not Obscene that you want. I personally find crowd reaction more fun to watch than the wrestling recently, so dead crowds are way worse than inappropriate timed chant crowds (Hell, I love when they chant inappropriate times during filler matches)

Holy Shit still hasn't been ruined at least, people are almost scared to start that chant unless it's truly deserving.

The first time I ever noticed the "This is Awesome" chant was when I used to watch TNA on Spike about 8-9 years ago. There is one group that used to always be there, if my memory is good enough they called themselves the "Crucial Crew". Crucial to what I have no idea. It was always the same people and they used to chant "This is Awesome" all the time.

The first time I ever heard it in the WWE I was looking through the crowd to see if those idiots had managed to infiltrate the audience. God they were horrible, and wouldn't know a truly awesome moment if it jumped up and punched them one.

The chant is terribly overused, but until someone comes up with something else that what we'll hear everytime we turn on the TV. Because God forbid the fans don't have something to chant or yell about.

It's funny because I don't remember hearing the chant until pretty recently, like looking back 4-5 years ago I can't recall hearing it or least not nearly as often as nowadays. I don't really mind it that much, there are times where it's really fitting like one of those amazing Cesaro-Cena matches, earlier this year when DB and Ziggler were putting on MITY level matches on Raw/SD or when Owens had one hell of a main roster debut against Cena those chants helped make those already incredible matches just a little more special.

But like everything in life there's always too much of a good thing. Yes the chant is great but there are times where I hear it and say to myself "Um, OK if you say so....." since I would find what's going on to be simply good to above average instead of actually being awesome. And even if it was awesome if the chant happened earlier in the night repeating it somehow makes everything less awesome simply because the fresh cool thing that's happening right now is being treated the same way as something that happened hours ago.

You know I'd prefer "This is awesome" chants to "You suck Cena" or "CM Punk"(When AJ is wrestling) or "Boring". I would rather the crowd chant something positive or fun than smarky or negative.

Who really cares? I mean honestly, out of all the things you could be moaning about, this is what you chose?

I was watching NXT this week and they were chanting "This is Awesome" before the Gable/Jordan match even started.. Why were they doing that? Maybe they just want something to chant. It doesn't make much sense to me chanting that before anything happens.

I’m not moaning or complaining. I’m not one of those people who bitch about every little thing that goes on in the WWE. I was simply trying to have a discussion. I wanted to know if people feel as I do about the chant, which is that it’s over used and why has it become over used. In my post, I don’t recall saying whether I liked the chant or not. So, in the future, don’t ever presume to know what I’m thinking because your opinion on things to be moaning about has nothing to do with this topic.

I get where you are going with the question as the chant is not being used for awesome matches but for matches that are better than people expected - what we used to call good matches. How can you say "this is awesome" 5 minutes into a match? Yet that happens a lot. It is simple - wwe has watered down the matches so much that anything that is better than you average match gets called awesome but really, they are not but the fans are so used to the wwe style that for them, it is awesome. With so few really good matches today, the wwe fans just don't know what the difference is between a good, great and awesome match so everything better becomes awesome.
