the ecw championship

i am sure this has been covered tons of times and i've probably already asked it but never got the answer. but is the ecw championship still a legitimate world championship, despite the fact that everybody says that it is about just as credible as the us or ic title these days?

like, can we consider cm punk a 2 time world champion since he held the ecw and whc. kane, big show, lashley, morrison, guerrero, henry, hardy: are these guys all former ecw WORLD champions? your thoughts...

i don't know i think it is wen wwe or tna want to elevate someone (like lashley or big show) however when chavo gurrero was the ecw champ in 2008 he was in the royal rumble, so i think there labelling it as a world title but not quite up there with the rest of the world straps.

In regards to the question i think we can consider punk, kane, big show, lashley etc as world champions becasue technically they are, so u really havent got any choice lol

PWI who are the official body for recognising singles championships dont rate the ECW championship as a World championship even though it has been defended overseas, the reason being is that they where against the WWEs said use of the title.

And to be honest the fact that the ECW championship has been used poorly by the WWE due to the fact that they see ECW as a developmental division for the wwe itself and dont care how badly the brand has been treated even though it has done its job manyh times over as it has developed more and more WWE stars, the fact that the wwe does treat it like the red headed step child has decreased the baring of the title itself, rendering it an upper midcard championship for anyone who may be groomed for world title status.

If you need more information you can check out the PWI rankings system it can give you more information in regards to how they rank the titles and what criteria's they use to govern world status.

Its a world title because after the resurection of ECW the broadcast table (Joey Styles and Tazz) called it the ECW World Heavy Weight Championship and later on it was called the ECW World Championship and now it is just the ECW Championship.
YES, its a world title but its not as credible as it used to be or as credible for example: the NWA WHC,WWE title,TNA WHC,WWE WHC, hell its not even as credible as the original ECW title so yes its an easy world title to gain for big fish in small ponds but its really not that credible...

No. It's simply called the ECW Championship. When the champion is in the Royal Rumble competing for a 'title shot', then that says it all. It's a mid-card title. No bones about it.

I think that when the ECW Title was reactivated after RVDs win it was meant to be a world championship but after that (starting probably with Johnny Nitro/John Morrison) it's prestige went downhill pretty fast. Champions like Chavo Guerrero, Mark Henry, and Matt Hardy only help to solidify the fact that the ECW Championship is no longer on the same level as the WWE and World Heavyweight Titles. I would have to agree with those who say it's a mid-card title and I doubt it will ever regain world title status.

the ECW tittle is trash i know they are now trying to make it have some credit. this tittle was meant for hard working wrestlers. the belt use to be always about extreme rules and special matches. to help stars who could not wrestle but go crazy now Vince has ruined its credit. in not saying they should be special matches but atleast give the belt 15-20 minutes on paper-view as that is only time it is defended. the matches are m ade a joke out of. i liked the Decmber to Dismember idea though in 2006 when they decided to have 6 best stars in a Elimnation chamber. this is a good idea for No Way Out now. but Vince is to stupid to take advandage of oppurtunties.

Well, the thing is, if WWE wants the ECW Title to be considered a world title then they need to start treating it as such. They wouldn't even necessarily have to have "extreme" matches to do so. Simply have top level stars compete for the belt, defend the title in PPV main events (rather than the first match of the night), and quit having the ECW Champion participate in the Royal Rumble or Money-In-The-Bank Matches. (I don't know if an ECW Champion has ever competed in MITB but the way things are going it's only a matter of time until one does.)

I would like to think that the ECW Championship would be recognized as a world title, but it's not. As mentioned abouve; it obviously doesn't have the credibility that it once did, and that is a real shame.

Considering all the past ECW champs who held that title, what is seems to me is that it turns out that Vince looked at them all like gum on his shoe that cling on until you scrape them off. Jerry Lynn, Taz, Sabu, Dreamer, Sandman; they were all reduced down to mid-card status, or hardly even put on TV at all. Lynn, being the ROH title holder right now, was immediately placed on Heat, and released later on. Vince saw ECW as scum, bought it out, and used it as the trash he thought it was. Hell, he has a frickin' DIVA as General Manager. I bet you anything that Heyman is laughing his ass off and vomiting at the same time at creative for THAT dumbass idea.

The way that title is being used is a disgrace; I see it as a mid-card title, no more than the US or the IC belt, with the way it's presented. And in all honesty, I could very well see MVP (or any other strong midcarder without a storyline) be booked as the ECW champ later on, sad as that may seem (even though MVP is a phenomenal superstar).

So, I think that no, the ECW championship is not a legit world title. Sum that up to Vince. And I bet you if and when TNA succumbs to the WWE superpowers and Vince buys them out, he'll combine the TNA and ECW belts somehow.

It was considered a World title by PWI while RVD and Big Show held it. After that, it was changed and is no longer considered a world title. Thats why it is now called simply the ECW Championship
