The Demise of Submission Wrestling

Back when I was a kid, if Ken Shamrock got you in the Ankle Lock...you tapped out. If Bret Hart got you locked into the Sharpshooter...then you gave up. It didn't matter who you were...you tapped.

Nowadays...the execution of a submission move means one of two things will soon follow:

1) Rope break

2) Break of the hold

They have been rendered the weakest moves in wrestling. Why is it so bad to have someone tap out? And when did this decline of what was once a sure-fire finishing move begin?
