The prologue to filmmaker Christopher Nolan's much-anticipated final "Batman" movie will be shown in 32 IMAX theaters across the U.S., Warner Bros. announced Friday.

(Scroll down to see the list.)

The prologue will be shown in advance of select screenings of "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" starting Dec. 16. It will debut in IMAX theaters in Canada that same day.

Starting Dec. 21, the prologue will hit IMAX theaters in the U.K.

Portions of the prologue were shot using IMAX cameras. It is rated PG-13.

Nolan told Empire magazine that the "Dark Knight Rises" prologue is "basically the first six, seven minutes of the film" and will serve as "an introduction to Bane, and a taste of the rest of the film."

For "The Dark Knight Rises," Nolan is using IMAX cameras more heavily than he did in his previous "Batman" movie, "The Dark Knight." That movie was the first major feature shot partially with IMAX cameras.

“Our experience on ‘The Dark Knight’ shooting and projecting IMAX 15 perf 65mm/70mm film was inspiring," Nolan said in a statement. "The immersive quality of the image goes beyond any other filmmaking tool available, and in revisiting Gotham, we were determined to shoot even more of the movie in this unique format."

Christian Bale stars as Bruce Wayne and Batman. Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Miranda Tate and Joseph Gordon-Levitt also star. Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman return to the cast.

Nolan wrote the script from a story he wrote with David S. Goyer.

Nolan, Emma Thomas and Charles Roven are producing.

The movie is scheduled for a July 20, 2012 release.

The enormous amount of hype that surrounds The Dark Knight Rises continues to build, and this prologue will be a big deal. Honestly, I don't think The Dark Knight Rises needs anymore hype. This film has been at the top of 2012's most anticipated list for quite some time, and fans have been foaming at the mouth for years now. Everyone wants to see the conclusion of Nolan's Batman trilogy, the anticipation is already there, and the release of this film will be a big event event next summer regardless, so this prologue feels kind of unnecessary.

Of course, this video will provide more hype for The Dark Knight Rises. People will enjoy this, and the IMAX screenings will provide a pleasing treat for the eyes. A lot of people want to see more footage, and this prologue should satisfy them. And I wouldn't be surprised if this prologue video popped up online somehow. This prologue is supposed to be exclusive to the IMAX theaters, but you just know this video will find its way online soon enough.

I'm going to avoid the prologue, because I don't want it to spoil anything for me. I'll chose the trailer instead (the first full length trailer will be released on the same day). Six to seven minutes is a good amount of time, and I hope the trailer won't give away too many major details. I have some pretty big expectations for this film, and I don't want to see any key details or clues. I really want to feel the surprises in this film, and I don't want to see anything coming.

I was in London last week and got to see the prologue in the IMAX. The prologue itself doesn't actually contain any spoilers about the movie as it's more of an introduction to the character of Bane. One thing though was that it was very hard to understand what Bane was saying during the prologue but i imagine that will be cleared up in production before the movie is released this year.

Turns out the prologue has already leaked online although the quality is very bad. If anything though getting to see the 8 minutes of the film has left me anxious to see the whole film in it's entirety.

Saw it in Manchester a couple of weeks ago, and it looks and sounds breathtaking.
The IMAX visuals are some of the best I've seen since the last Batman film, and as soon as I heard Hans Zimmer's score again the hairs on my neck and arms went straight up.
