The Cashless Society: 2010 and Beyond

Big Boot, Leg Drop, 1....2....3
At the turn of the century we started converting our check books into debit cards, and our cash into credit cards. Our paychecks are direct deposited, and money orders are now Paypal. Western Union is now on a side ride at a truck stop, and check cashing places hardly ever have long lines.

I reach into my pocket, and I barely have $20 cash on me at a given time, yet my bank account doesn’t say that, and I can essentially get anything I want with my cards since that’s where my “money” is. Welcome to the future folks. But is this necessarily a good thing? Every single purchase is now tracked, or can be easily tracked. I’m not saying that it’s necessarily a “bad thing”, but does that make for a better society?

Should we still use cash as much as we did years or rather decades ago? I don’t miss cash that much, but I wonder where our society is headed, and how “money” will be integrated into our society in the future. I’m on the fence here, but I think this can lead to trouble ala Big Brother like overseeing of our personal transactions. We really aren’t too far from that if you ask me. What is your stance on cash versus card use in our culture?
