Talent contests

Pop idol, American idol, X-Factor, Britains got talent, Americas got talent, Fame Academy, How do we solve a problem like Maria?, Popstars the rivals, Etc etc. You know I could go on forever listing the names of these pointless competitions which get people to phone up and choose their winner.

You may wonder why I say pointless, but think about it. I could probably only name 2 people who have won in these competitions. Why? Because they release a single, bring out an album, and then disappear off the face off the Earth. It's like the long way to getting 15 minutes of fame. And this is with very few exceptions.

In my opinion, the best parts of these shows are the auditions. Who doesn't love seeing people making a fool out of themselves? And these auditions are only good because they're so damn terrible. Producers purposely put awful people on tv to generate more viewers. We'd get vored if we saw 15000 people with the voice of an angel.

And I never phone up for these things. No matter who I want to win. It's a complete waste of my money regardless of how much I want the person to suceed. What do I gain from it? I then just have to go out and buy their albums and singles. And no matter who wins, at least 3 other people from these shows bring out an album. So regardless of me paying my money, I will get a result.

The only shows I've ever watched all the way through are the X-Factor and Britains got Talent. BGT was probably the best simply because it's variety. And I had people I really wanted to win on it. But There are about 100 contest all about singing. They find something that wrks and then there's about 5 more rip offs of each competition. It's so repetitive it's unbelievable.

What do you think about these? Do you ring up for your favourites? Or do you not even watch them?

By far the best part of talent shows is the auditions. On the like of x-factor or American/Pop Idol, people have been told they can sing, but they quite clearly can't, and it's just such fun to watch the likes of Simon Cowell put them down, all the while thinking they're the best thing to happen to music.

It really is just 15 minutes of fame as you said, simply because the majority of the artists don't have the ability to work out their own style of music and get lost in covers. The only exceptions I can think off to this are Kelly Clarkson, and for the UK readers, Leona Lewis (will young as well, although he didn't actually win one). The reason for this is that they took time and came back with material they'd worked on themselves and made a success of it - they weren't lazy.

Britain's got Talent was good, except I HATE the fact that the majority of people have some sob story as to why they deserve to win to gte votes. GET BY ON TALENT!!! My view is that if people are talented enough AND want to be in that industry, they can make it work without selling themselves to reality TV

I couldn't have said it better myself. I HATED Andrew Johnston; that fat kid who complained about being bullied all the time. That's probably the reason he got through IMO. He wasn't even that good.

Same with that foreign women; Madonna. It annoyed me how she complained she couldn't afford to send her kids over, yet she has a house, a computer, the internet and a webcam, as an Britains got More Talent it showed her on msn to her kids. And she made Amanda cry simply because of her stupid sob story. Gosh I hate them.

Exactly, leave your sob stories at the door and rely on your talent. A lot of those people got through on sob stories. At least the guy that won had the decency to release his after the programme. Maybe I'm just hard hearted, but I hate things like that. It's like people using their kids to beg...I won't give them any money simply because they're manipulating people.

But to be successful in reality TV contests you need to:
  1. Be good looking (slim with large assets, or a hot looking guy)
  2. have a sob story
  3. Have a big personality
  4. Maybe have some talent
Anything to make the public like you really
