Taking Liberties

Is it ever acceptable to take liberties in wrestling? I think it is fine to be stiff with certain wrestlers. And it adds a bit of realism to certain matches. But I don't think there is any need to work stiff with greener wrestlers, or in dark matches, or matches that are 5 minutes long on Smackdown. If it adds to the match, and it's ok with both wrestlers then fine. Both wrestlers must be completley comfortable with each other. Then go for it.

As for taking shots at wrestlers fo no reason, then that is beyond pointless. Rick Steiner beating the shit out of Konnan & Saturn was a waste of time. Vader hitting wrestlers is pointless. Why would you want to get in a ring with somebody who is willing to hit you for there own amusement?

Agreed. With pro wrestling, you have to have trust, and if you get in the ring with someone who works you over to amuse the "guys in the back" you violate that trust. That's something I always liked about Bret Hart and Ric Flair. They are known as guys who would protect the guy(s) they were in the ring with.

Jake, you mention that it is ok when it makes sense in a match. But isn't there a whole host of other things that could be done that would make just as much sense without the risk of injury?

I am cool with the "liberties" in rare cases, like an arrogant newbie who needs to be roughed up for respect reasons (see: Hardcore Holly and Renee Dupris).

As in working stiff. I'm pretty sure that every wrestler is comfortable with Bryan Danielson. I dont think for a second that Nigel McGuinness was upset with Bryan personally when he broke his nose and gave him two nasty black eyes.

Im suposed to "respect" Hardcore Holly? The guy is one of the biggest bullies in the WWE. Its horrible when you hear storries about his stiffness with the rookies. I think he is trying to compensate for nnot having the look or the mic skills to be a main eventer :P

That's a great point, too. I am not condoning Holly being stiff on rookies for the sake of hazing them. I am more talking about when a young guy causes problems backstage and WWE intentionally pairs that kid up with Holly, asking Holly to work stiff and get them to tone it down. I can understand that to an extent because that's the way, I understand, it's been done for some time.

In my opinion there is no reason to stiff your opponent unless he deserves it. Now what I really dislike is when a veteran stiffs a talented young guy just because he feels like it, and when I say talented young guy, I mean somebody who loves the business, means no disrespect and wants to learn from the best. Normally when you get somebody who beats the hell out of you for no good reason, it's either because he's trying to get a laugh out of the guys in the back(like somebody said earlier) or he's only trying to get himself over in the show.
