First thing they NEED to do. Make any possible pin/combo move into a pin/combo. IE, you can pin from almost anything. Why would this be better? Because then it gives you a LEGIT flow.
For instance....
Say you're playing as CM Punk in a match against Cena. (Cleanest example I can think of.) As Punk, you hit the Savage style elbow drop...this should have the option. You can pin, or not, and get up immediately. Say you're playing as Michaels and you hit the sweet chin music. You should have a choice to pin or not. This should be a mandatory for all moves - the choice to pin or just get up to inflict more damage.
The biggest problem for me has never been proportions of things. It's never been "what size ladders are" despite the fact that I DO think ladders should have a range of sizes and it should be randomized with what type of ladder you pull out...
My biggest issue with the games has ALWAYS been the flow. At times it feels like the matches are too quick and the AI likes to just fly into it with no feeling out process. It feels like matches have always been far too quick, hence why you can easily finish any match within 3 mins if you just hit a barrage of moves.
It's almost far too easy to squash every opponent you have.
My other issue is commentary and the set phrases. This I don't mind, but I feel it's always very disconnected from the game. A part of me thinks they should do away with set phrases about people, IE, "CM Punk believes he is the savior of the WWE"...and they should work more toward the model they used with UFC Unleashed 2010, which was that they had designated things to say about the previous matches and then the MOVES they were using.
IE, if they used the universe mode, you could quite easily have the commentators saying that Wrestler X is on a winning streak as of late, or Wrestler Y is on a losing streak, or Wrestler Z just beat Wrestler X in the biggest match of his career and if he keeps on winning, he could become the #1 contender. Then just add in a few set phrases about the moves, IE, "That's a nasty suplex", "I'd watch out for those stiff kicks if I was wrestler A, he could kick your head right off your shoulders!" and then...the big things a commentator SHOULD announce properly. Things like pins and submissions.
I feel like in current games, the commentary feels lackluster towards a pin. They should count with and get excited about pins happening. They should actually say, as soon as you go for a pin that you're going for a pin attempt and then they should get excited when the other end kicks out, so for instance, count with the pin and then answer with "HOW THE HELL did he kick out of that?!" just to build a lot more excitement. Submissions need to have the same sort of thing too, and they ALSO need to build in a meter which allows you to tap it and the more you get towards a designated amount, the closer to ropes you should get.
It feels to me like the games MISS out certain parts. TKO's for a start, and I'm not talking about the MMA TKO's. How about when for instance Wrestler A and Wrestler B collide with joint clotheslines and there's that exciting moment where neither man gets up until the 8 or 9 count? They've missed THAT off completely in every rendition. Also as said above in my last paragraph, there's a lack of submission attempts actually TRYING to get to the ropes, yet I remember in 99% of matches where a submission can end it, the ropes ARE the pivotal part of it, and one person crawls to the ropes while the other tries to pull them away and back into the centre of the ring. There needs to be a minigame for this somewhere.
I feel like if they want to present the game as you're playing the WWE, they need to add in ALL of the rules and not bend and break the rules of WWE in officiating to suit them.
