Basically the Governor of Missouri Jay Nixon cut funding to the public defense office by 8%. The Public Defense Office countered by using a little-known legal statute allowing them to make any attorney a public defender for a case to make said governor Jay Nixon (a licensed attorney) a public defender and begin assigning him a case. Best part is that there's no in-writing limit, meaning theoretically Nixon could keep getting assigned more and more cases.
