Snow days

Whats your opinion on schools shutting on snow days? Personally i'm quite biased being a kid,but i think they should happen.
Though people say there isnt that much danger, consider something that happened monday-
My city council ordered every council school to shut, but one schools head teacher took it in to their own hands to DEFY the council and stay open.
Three kids got injured falling on the ice, and one teacher broke his arm in a car crash caused by the ice, rang up the school to tell them, to be told he was still expected to come in.
But then, if its only a bit of snow, its not that much of a problem to expect kids to come in, it is their education after all.
Your thoughts?

Growing up, my school was never closed, except in the blizzard of '96. It didnt matter how much snow was on the ground, they still kept the schools open. I remember back in I think it was '91, I actually had injured myself on the ice, I broke a bone in 2 of my fingers. I was only 6 at the time, and you could probably understand how much that hurt.

I do believe that if there is the right amount of snow on the ground, schools should close. I'm not talking about an inch or two. But three inches or above of snow should equal school closing. I never want a little kid to have to go to school in the snow, where some of it may have turned to ice, slip, and break their fingers just like I did.

However, It really all depends on the kid's parents. Yes the city can say, "Schools are open today." But if a parent doesnt want their kids out in the snow, then they shouldnt have them go to school.

My college had 1 day closed, and a couple with an early closure. But my kids schools were closed for a week, meaning I couldn't go in anyway. Being in college, or school, it's hard for us to not be biased, but what about the parents who have to work, but can't due to school closures? Some employers may give them it off, maybe as a day of their holidays. But some won't pay those parents, especially after a day or so. Wherever possible, schools should be open. There are obviously times where this is impossible, but every effort should be made to keep them open.

I also think sometimes teachers just don't come in because they know it'll be a snow day if enough of themn say they can't make it. People with professions that are urgent, such as doctors and nurses, don't really have the option to stay off of work, so they HAVE to find a way in. If they can do it, teachers can.

Well since I'm from Texas we didn't get very many days off from school for "snow days", it's a rarity here. The few times that they did happen, I enjoyed getting to stay home and play video games instead of having to go to school. Having no assignments to work on that same evening was always great too.

I think that schools should only close for a "snow day" if the weather is SO bad that it would be too hazardous to get to school safely because that way the people who rely on school days for work can still get their work and the kids who want days off might still get one or two on the rare days when the weather is insanely bad.

Up here in the lovely cold of Minnesota, it takes around a foot or so of snowfall for schools to start closing. The farther away from the cities you are, the less snow required.

Now to your question. It really depends if the buses can make it through. If they cannot make it, the school will be closed because if state funded transportation is unable to pass through the snow, private vehicles should not risk it.

A way my school district makes up snow days is that any days taken off for snow days get added on to either long breaks (spring, christmas, etc.) are tacked on at the end of year. So regardless, you have to go to school a certain amount of days.

I currently live in California and in the area that I live in, it doesn't snow (there ARE some places where it does snow here although it is a rarity) and I used to live in Queens, NY where it did snow. Back when I lived in NY, we never got days off when it snowed which turned out to be a pain in the ass since I had to commute from Queens to Manhattan on a daily basis to go to school. While a pain in the ass, it wasn't a major problem and I dealt. To me, schools should only close for snow days if the snow proves to be hazardous to people trying to go to school and whatnot. Ultimately, it doesn't really matter because all schools (I think) run for the exact same amount of hours per school year so it doesn't really take away from the education aspect of school.
