Scarlett Johansson In Ghost In The Shell

Of course she's the wrong choice, because she's a white woman signed on to play a Japanese woman in an adaptation of one of the most beloved anime sci-fi series' of all time. The character's name is Motoko Kusanagi, for crying out loud. And Johansson's last solo action role saw her punching out a bunch of people of Asian origins who had no lines but plenty of scary music to accompany them in a film that was based around some bullshit pseudoscience that was disproven ages ago.

Whose stupid fucking idea was this?

First white people Akira, now white people GITS. I love adaptations, but Hollywood needs to fuck off and fast with this shit.

:worship:

Thanks for reminding me of this

Well... no matter what it's still going to be better than white people Dragonball Z.

I tried to watch Ghost In The Shell not too long ago and just couldn't get into it. I really don't see the big deal about it.

That said, a big budget American live action remake could be fun. People have to recognize the key word in that sentence, American. So if it's set in America, why should it be to anyone's surprise that it mostly stars white people, the majority race of this country? Bollyhood remakes shit all the time with Indian actors, does anyone care? Does anyone care that Japan's superb remake of Unforgiven last year starred Japanese actors?

Besides, Japanese anime "white washes" their product all the time. Seriously, who the fuck looks of Asian descent in this picture?

Those are all supposed to be Japanese characters, right? They look white to me.

Now, with that said, Scarlett Johansson can piss off. She's cool in the Avengers movies and everything, but who's fucking idea was it to make her a full fledged action star bad ass? She's not even that attractive anymore after getting that breast reduction and I'm sure now it's even worse after having a baby.

I know people hate Anne Hathaway but she's an incredible actress and I thought she was the best thing in The Dark Knight Rises. She'd kill in a role like this. Rinko Kikuchi or Chiaki Kuriyama would have been the ideal choice(s) if they went the Japanese route.

Well said, couldn't agree more. Japan and India have also remade some of our comic books characters, some turned out rather well. As long as it's good, I see no problem here.

I had been thinking if this was basically just the plot of Ghost In The Shell but set in a futuristic American city could people have as much gripe. I mean Akira Kurosawa had been redoing Shakespeare plays years ago and people seemed to like those interpretations

Bit of trivia for you - Throne of Blood, his reworking of Macbeth, contains 0 lines that are the same as the original play.

See, an adaptation set in an American city is quite a bit different from "Scarlett Johansson is going to be playing a Japanese character with a Japanese name who lives in a Japanese city". I still wouldn't want to see Scarlett Johansson in the role, but I wouldn't mind it and I'd be excited for the film.

White People Akira should straight up not happen though considering what it's actually meant to be about.
