ROHbots, Assemble!

Uncle Sam

Rear Naked Bloke
There's a few of you still scuttling about, aren't there? I know Xfear is absent more often than a chav at secondary school, but I'd imagine that a couple of you remain. I have a task for you - make me spend money. Sell me on Kevin Steen, El Generico and, if you have the time, Delirious. Shit, sell me on Ring Of Honor. Pretend you're a used car salesman and ROH is a Peugot 206 with a dent in the bonnet.

My thirst for DVDs can no longer be sated by WWE DVDs; I'm trying to expand my horizons. That horizon over there has poor production values and terminal technical problems with iPPVs - let's go over there. I've not seen a Ring Of Honor show since Good Times, Great Memories. That was what, 2007?

There's three DVDs I'm looking at buying (match listings link in images):

For context, I've never seen a Kevin Steen or El Generico match. I saw Delirious job to Samoa Joe in TNA once. Oddly enough, I think that's actually on the Best of Samoa Joe (TNA) DVD.

Thoughts, further recommendations, awkward silence; I'd like to hear it all.

Any of those seem good but I've not seen them and I haven't got any recent ROH shows.

Is that a good replacement for Silver Vision Sam?

No, afraid not. It's a good site for TNA, ROH and other indie DVDs - in as much as it's pretty much the only place in the UK that sells them - but the full-on face fuck of bargain bonanzas remains a strictly Silver Vision experience.

Delirious is legitimately not total shite.

You should sell cars.

"Put it in H!"

You picked three of my favorite indy wrestlers ever there. I don't think any of those three sets will let you down.

Steen is a really unique talent. He's a master of in ring psychology in all his incarnations. Pre heel, he's a pretty solid if unspectacular talent. The most notable work in that time frame is anything hardcore and him with Generico in a tag team. If it's a singles match without a stipulation, it probably isn't worth a ton, but there's a few scattered ones here and there. He has a match with Nigel McGuinness that's pretty good. After turning heel, he became one of the best talents in the indies. His act is great - he does crazy, insane, borderline disgusting shit. His promos are legendary. He's a phenomenal heel and a pretty innovative guy. It carries over into his matches, as he's a heel ring general like few out there today.

El Generico is a pretty classic face with a great suite of luchador moves. I've never been not entertained by watchin El Generico. Lots of exciting moves. He's a very good seller. He's also funny, if you like a little comedy in your wrestling. I'm not the biggest El Generico fan in the world, but he's well worth watching. If I was going to miss one of those sets, though, it'd be his.

Delirious is one of my all time favorites. It's hard to describe what it is about him, but he's just amazing. He's been around for a long time, and he knows the business of wrestling in and out of the ring about as well as anyone on the indies, a big part of why he's booking ROH now. His act, his whole shtick, is very entertaining. The lizard man under the mask who can only speak gibberish, and so forth. But most of all, he just plain knows how to wrestle. He's got all the tools, all the pieces you need to construct a great match. You can stick him in there with anyone and he'll make it worth your while. I would prioritize his set above all.

I love Steen

Delirious is pretty good

El Generico is crap, & does absolutely nothing for me

Of those three DVDs the only one I would buy is Steen's, though I don't think the Delirious would be a waste of money either.

As good as I'm sure those three DVDs are, I can't recommend getting them. ROH has been so awful all year at pretty much everything and have offered such a bland product and terrible costumer service, I can't recommend anyone to buy any of their stuff. Everything about ROH is just bad, and I have a hard time telling anyone to spend their money on them.

I'm only familiar with Kevin Steen as a heel. He is a great one though, he acts like a remorseless bully who wants to spread destruction. He's a sociopath who is having fun beating up people. That's what I expect a heel to act like. And what's more unlike WWE they actually let him be a legit threat to the babyfaces.

El Generico is a classic babyface who does a lot of great lucha style moves and he sells like a pro. Attacking El Generico and turning against him set up Steen's run as a heel.

Delirious is hysterical, if you can't be entertained during one of his matches I'm afraid you just don't have a soul. His gibberish laden promos are hilarious. I loved watching his matches in this one local indy fed near me. Especially when he was feuding with Sami Callahan and the late great Larry Sweeney. He's not all comedy though, the dude actually can wrestle. In fact if I remember correctly he's currently the trainer for ROH.

Other stuff in ROH you'll want to check out is manager Truth martini. that dude is a classic wrestling manager. He looks ridiculous and just makes you wnat to see him get his ass kicked. He's currently managing the stable House of Truth. I also enjoy listening to former ROH wrestler Nigel McGuiness and Kevin Kelly's commentary on the weekly show. They act like they know what they're talking about and don't waste the show trying to put themselves over.

You should probably not start getting into Ring of Honor by reading my editorial yesterday on how New Jersey's ROH fans suck balls. Mostly because I didn't come across as singling out Jersey; I very much came across like I was insulting all ROH fans. Which I wasn't, because I am one. I believe the phrase "mentally challenged throwing a fit at Walmart" was used. Just a tip.

Sam, if you wait for a good sale I'll let you use my Ringside Membership 15% discount. It stacks with sales, so I've picked up stuff from ROH for as little as 20% the original cost.

Most of their Survival of the FIttest shows are great. Any of the 2-day WrestleMania weekend shows have at least something you can get into. They released a "Summer of Punk" DVD not too long ago, and there's a Daniel Bryan collection too if you want to connect some of the current guys to their humble roots in ROH. I haven't seen either, but I hear good things. I dont' hate Generico, and he's incredibly over at live shows. Davey Richards and Eddie Edwards are both solid in-ring workers, but the problem I have with a lot of those workers is their matches end up being largely the same. All 20-25 minutes long, some of the same spots executed multiple times, spilling out to the floor 15 times to stall, and a metric fuck-ton of near falls. There are gems though, and they rarely have BAD matches. But by the 28th almost 3-count you kind of don't care how it ends, so long as it DOES actually end.

I like Mike Bennet. But I'm not sure there's actually anything really out yet worth watching. He's had some good exchanges real recently with Lance Storm. There's some Lethal stuff too, if you're into him. He's a solid wrestler with a TNA-level pop; some fun to be had. I'm also a big Adam Cole fan, but he was the first wrestler I ever interviewed and we still stay in contact every few months, so I'm probably biased.

There's a lot of Generico on the Steen DVD. Two birds, one stone, no?

I'm a genius.

Yeah, you'll get a real feel for what El Generico brings to the table there. Unlike Steen, Generico is pretty similar in both tag team and singles contests.

Don't tell me the DVD feed gets cut.

Genericio should be the one to take the title off of Steen, Only one with the biggest fan following to make it look legit.
