Remembering The Goalies: Roman Cechmanek

Mr. TM

Throwing a tantrum
The man who played in three incredible seasons from game 1-82 for the Philadelphia Flyers, Cechmanek was ever so close to winning a Vezina trophy, and one year won the Jennings for least goals allowed by a team. But what happened to him? Well that is simple, he was a failure come April. Philly likes to win, and he was not giving that to them. So they shipped him off to a team that doesn't care much, the LA Kings. He sulked and sucked, and went home to Czech Republic for the lockout season, and never made it back to the NHL.

This is a goalie who not to long ago was one of the premier goalies, and now, he has lost his smile. But now at 38, it seems like there is little chance of him ever making the NHL again.

I'm not a big hockey fan, but I use to watch before the strike and Roman was one of my favorites, considering I was a Flyers fan. Dude was a beast of a goalie and I was shocked when they traded him, even though I expected it to happen. He was so unclutch and just couldn't win when it mattered. Fantastic regular season goalie, not so great playoff goalie.

He was a huge presence in net. He was huge and filled that net very well. As you have both stated, he had great regular seasons, but come crunch time he folded. If you can't perform in the playoffs in the NHL chances are you won't be a starter for very long. That was Roman's downfall. You don't perform when it counts say goodbye. The Fylers made the right move getting rid of him because he wasn't taking them anywhere after the regular season. It's a damn shame, but that's how the cookie crumbles.
