Mick Overlast finally gets his opportunity at the Elite X title after winning the number one contender spot on Ascension 50 where he must stand up against the dominate champion Triple X who has been on a huge winning streak ever since the Lethal Lottery with the company. It's going to be a tough battle for the former Son of Destiny to take on the task but nobody ever has had a long-lasting career with only wins on their resume. Will Overlast be the first person to take down the young gun or will X continue to dominate the Elite X division?

Deadline is Wednesday, July 25th at 11:59 PM Central Time.

Mick Overlast.

We’ve fought twice before. Once in a singles match, prior to Kingdom Come, once in a tag match last week, pinning him both times. But this is a very different Overlast to the one I faced back before Kingdom Come, and compared to last week, there’s more on the line here. He’s hungry. I’ve seen that hunger staring back at me in the mirror many times, and I know how dangerous a tool it can be.

This is gonna be fun.

…What do you think, Xander?

Huh?

Triple X snaps back to reality, to find his mother, Rachel, holding up his old accomplishment board. The torn sides of paper have now been replaced with new, fresh ones; his victory at Kingdom Come, a mid-air shot of him performing The Skyfall, shaking hands with Constantine, and an action shot of him X-Rating Sam Smith in the face are amongst the new additions.

Lounge or hallway?

…neither. The last thing your friends are gonna want to see is me all sweaty and topless jumping on top of other men.

You’d be surprised-

Mom, stop talking.

Frank walks into the room carrying a cardboard box full of a mix of books, pictures, amongst other things.

That’s the last of it.

Thank you Frank. Both of you, in fact. I don’t know what I’d have done without you.

Anytime, Rachel. What do you want me to do with this?

With what? (she see’s the box and it’s contents) Oh…

Rachel hesitates for a moment.

Mom and dad. I thought they were indestructible. Together forever. How wrong can a guy be, huh? Turns out all it took was for one to forgive and not the other. I’m glad I wasn’t here when they argued, but I still can’t help feel responsible. I did fly off at dad, and I knew he was going to be the most difficult to win round.

…I’ll drop it by his later.

The three of them stand for a moment as those words hang in the air, as both Rachel and Frank try to grasp the offer X has just made.

No, I don’t think-

-X, that’s probably not for the-

-besides, I don’t think any of this stuff is important anyway-

-after all, you’ve got your big match coming up, you don’t-

-distractions aren’t what you need ahead of Redemption, sweetie-

GUYS! Seriously, don’t worry.

But Xander, after last time-

-last time, I lost my cool. There was a lot of pent-up emotion. We both had a lot to get off our chest, and we did. One way or another...

…I’ll come with you.

X laughs. Yeah, because he’s not gonna want to knock you on your ass the first chance he gets. In his head, it’s your fault I’m such a disappointment.

Well at least let me drive you. I’ll stay in the car. Promise. You need a ride to get to the airport, anyway.

X hesitates for the moment, then looks at his wrist watch. Dammit Frank. Fine. I need to get going soon anyway.

X walks up to his mother, and they hug.

I’ll see you after Redemption.

Good luck Xander.

Wish Overlast Luck. He’s gonna need it.

Whatever happens, I am so proud of you Xander. Never forget that.

I won’t.

They pull apart, and X picks the box up and heads out with Frank in tow. X places the box on the back seat, then jumps into the passenger seat, as Frank starts the engine and begins to drive off.

You sure this is a good idea, X?

How’d you mean?

Well, not only could you start another fight, but with your match at Redemption only-

Frank, listen. I had a lot on my plate with all of this before Ascension, and I ended up getting the pin on the guy I’m facing. Pressure isn’t something new to me, and I can handle it pretty well.

I know. I just…I guess I worry. That was a good match on Ascension, by the way.

Thanks.

Did Mr Constantine mind you tagging yourself in like that?

X laughs. I was a bit worried. He looked a little puzzled. But he shook my hand and applauded me. At the end of the day, I pinned Mick Overlast; the guy I’m defending the Elite X championship against, which gives me a psychological advantage at the very least. Someone like John can appreciate that.

I guess. Though Overlast is gonna be gunning for you again.

I know. And I can’t take him lightly. Since splitting from Blade, he’s really stepped up a gear. I need to watch my back. But I’ve pinned him twice now, I can sure as hell beat him again.

I hope so, Xander.

There’s a silence in the car for a few moments.

Mom…she’s doing okay, right?

Frank looks puzzled, eyes still focused on the road.

She’s good at hiding stuff when she wants to.

Well…she’s coping. She could be better, obviously, but your mother has this wonderful way of making the best of a situation; good or bad. And I’ve helped out any way I can. To be honest, I was surprised she called me. It’s been a while since your mom and I have really seen eye to eye.

Yeah, well that was when dad was around.

It’s true that he always did the talking. I suppose your mom is just happy to have her son back.

At the cost of her marriage, though.

Frank glances at X quickly, before returning his eyes to the road.

None of this is your fault, Xander.

Frank, honestly, its fine. I’ve come to terms with it. Regardless of the outcome, someone had to do something. If dad wants to act like a spoilt child then he can, but I can’t just sit back and let things deteriorate further. I needed to see them. See if they still wanted their son. Didn’t expect them to be divided quite so…literally.

The car slows down outside some apartment buildings.

You sure you don’t want me to come in?

Thanks for the offer Frank, but you and I both know that’s a terrible idea.

Well, I’ll be here when you’re done. (Frank checks his phone) Your mother says it’s apartment number 1B. Good luck.

X gets out of the car and picks up the box, and heads to the dark, wood door of the apartment marked 1B. He rings the bell.

…who is it?

…it’s Xander. Dad, I’ve got the last of your stuff from home.

…

…Dad?

Leave it by the door and piss off.

How about you open the door like a man?

Silence follows for a few seconds, followed by the shuffle of feet, and the unlocking of a bolt. X takes a moment to steady himself, then enters. The hallway is bare, leading into the lounge. Save for a sofa and a few unpacked boxes, the room is bare. Alan sits on the sofa, looking down to the ground.

So, you gonna keep acting like the spoilt child here, or are you gonna act like a grown up?

Of all the nerve…showing up here like this…treating your own father like…can’t believe you’d hit your own…

I’m sorry about hitting you dad.

Alan looks up for a moment; X can clearly see his dad hasn’t been sleeping, and that he’s most likely been drinking.

Oh, you’re ‘sorry’? Okay then. You’re forgiven. Easy as that. Little prick.

Hey, hold on a second. I said I was sorry, but you were still out of line with the things you said.

Out of line, huh? You’d know about that…even when I specifically said…

-when you told me not to be a wrestler, I know-

-but you still did it! Didn’t you? Didn’t matter what I said, what I thought. Kept saying you’d get hurt, kept saying you’d fall off the wagon. But would you listen? Noooo. Of course not. You’re Xander Knight. ‘Triple X’! The risk taker. Why would you listen to your own dad?

Because you were wrong. No falling off. Getting hurt is my choice, but not once have I relapsed. Don’t take my word for it; I have medical records that can prove it. But that’s still not enough for you, is it dad? You just…why can’t you accept it?

Why… you’re a disappointment! I had high hopes Xander. You were top of your class, best at everything, then you go and meet that ****.

I’ll let it slide this time but don’t you ever talk about her-

-and you’re going out, and you’re doing drugs, and you’re getting drunk, and you waste your life away, and for what? A decent paying job with a future? No. You commit yourself to doing stupid things that’ll end up with my son either dead or crippled. You think I want that, Xander?

Do you think I do? I do this because I love it. No other reason. And, as it happens, I tend to be pretty damn good at it. (X sighs and looks at his watch) Look, I’ve gotta go. Got some things to do.

Yeah, your ‘big-shot’ career as a wrestler. Hey, I’ve seen that Mick Overlast guy; I hope he kicks your ass and brings you down to reality. I hope he wins your ‘precious’ title. I really hope he wipes the floor with you.

X stares at his father for a few seconds, before turning around and leaving without uttering another word. He closes the apartment door, and gets back into the car.

You okay?

X sits there for a moment, before looking up to Frank.

Fine, Frank. Just ready to hand out an ass-kicking.

A couple of WZCW officials are helping Ty Burna up the entrance ramp as Ascension 51 has gone off the air. A few groups of fans in attendance have already headed for the exits, looking to beat the traffic coming out of the arena, while others are waiting to see if there is anything to come in the aftermath of the Apostles' attack on Ty. What happens next is somewhat unexpected.

Mick Overlast strides out onto the ramp with an angry look on his face, his wrestling attire discarded for his trademark black suit with dark pinstripes. The fans still in the arena boo him, while some have taken to bellowing out chants of “You got beat!” and “Triple X!”

Overlast shakes his head and walks down the ramp and gets into the ring, asking for and receiving a microphone. He paces around the ring, staring down at the fans standing before him before moving into the center of the ring.

Overlast: I am sick and tired of hearing about Triple X!

The fans cheer at the mention of the hero in the upcoming battle as the chants of “Triple X” get louder.

Overlast: Ever since the Lethal Lottery, everyone – the guys in the back, WZCW Creative, you idiots in these seats – can not shut up about how perfect he is. Well, let me tell you all something. It's all a front.

A small smattering of boos can be heard throughout the arena, but it's mostly silent as people are waiting to hear what else Overlast has to say.

Overlast: Xander, I know you're back there and I know you can hear me. I want to congratulate you...for you have fooled everyone. You have successfully tricked everyone into thinking you're someone that you're not. You want to know how I know you're not who you seem to be? Because you haven't faced a lick of pressure in a long, long time. And from what I know about you, you haven't dealt with pressure especially well.

Ladies and gentlemen, years ago, Xander Knight had a chance to be a decent human being. But like all of you weak, gutless souls, he caved into peer pressure and delved into a life of alcohol and drugs. Yet that wasn't enough for him. He had to drag his sweet, innocent girlfriend into his degenerate lifestyle. And the poor girl left him a note apologizing to him before she overdosed and died. All he was left with was a memory and demons that will haunt him for the rest of his life.

The crowd gets more vocal, seemingly disgusted with Overlast's recollection of Triple X's past. Boos and obscenities start to shower upon Mick, who eats it up with a cheesy grin.

Overlast: Xander, you say you've changed your ways; that your new high comes from competing in the ring and being Elite X Champion. But deep down inside your soul, I know that junkie that put you through so much misery still lives. At Redemption, I fully plan on bringing him out.

You see, once upon a time, I was a perfectionist too. Everything I did had to be done the right way; everything I said had to come out right. I was adored; I was looked up to! But as I got older, the pressure mounted and I realized that it wasn't worth the half-eaten meals and the sleepless nights to try and remain perfect. My life got monumentally better upon that discovery, which brings me to you.

For the past six months, you have made your mark in this company. You haven't lost a single match dating back to the Lethal Lottery – hell, you've even beaten me twice. Every move you have made has been so calculated; every word you have spoken has given hope to the helpless peons that watch these shows. Yet you and I both know the pressure is mounting to remain perfect. What's even worse for you is that at Redemption, you are facing the single greatest challenger to your Elite X Title in me. I am the man that Johnny Scumm and Sam Smith wish they could be – in this ring and on this microphone.

You will make mistakes in this ring, and I will be there to capitalize on each and every one of them. I will apply pressure that you have never felt before, and I will finally break you. But I'm not planning on just exposing your flaws in the ring. Once I take that title from you, I will also go to work on exposing every one of your character flaws because you...are not...perfect! You...are a fraud! You are not a good person!

Overlast yells into the microphone, his face turning red. The boos begin to get louder, but not enough to drown out his booming voice. He takes a few deep breaths and speaks in a calmer tone.

Overlast: Everyone will soon get to see you for who you are, Xander. You've blinded everyone for too long, but two truths will be revealed in a couple weeks: perfection never lasts forever...and redemption isn't for everyone.

The top contender to the Elite X Title drops the microphone in the center of the ring before exiting the squared circle. As Overlast walks up the ramp, he carries a stoic look on his face, ignoring the insults hurled at him by the fans. He disappears behind the curtain as the riled-up crowd begins to head toward the exits.
