1. a commentator should commentate based on what he sees on the monitor, not in person, because that's what the viewers see. If he is watching the action live, how does he know that the camera caught it? So announce table position doesn't mean anything. They could have it facing away from the ring, and it would work fine.
2. Back in the 80's the commentators were in a similar position I believe. So it wasn't the first time it happened. I know back when 80's PPVs aired, they showed the commentators and they were in the same position.
3. Riaku is right also, about differentiating from Smackdown. They were trying to make the shows feel different, and the location of the commentators was one of the ways.
