RAW announce table (2003/2004)

From around 2003 or 2004 we saw the RAWs announcer's table moved up near the titantron near the start of the ramp. While on Smackdown, it remained close to the ring. Can anyone come up with an answer to Why they moved the announcer's table so far from the ring? Its had always bugged me.

One reason might be to make them seem different from Smackdown. Another might be so people would stop confusing The Coach with Carlos Cabrera. Probably the second one.

If I remember correctly, Bischoff made this decision when he was named GM of RAW.

Once he was "fired" by Mr McMahon, the table was moved back to ringside.

1. a commentator should commentate based on what he sees on the monitor, not in person, because that's what the viewers see. If he is watching the action live, how does he know that the camera caught it? So announce table position doesn't mean anything. They could have it facing away from the ring, and it would work fine.

2. Back in the 80's the commentators were in a similar position I believe. So it wasn't the first time it happened. I know back when 80's PPVs aired, they showed the commentators and they were in the same position.

3. Riaku is right also, about differentiating from Smackdown. They were trying to make the shows feel different, and the location of the commentators was one of the ways.

Vince was looking for a good reason to get JR and King off the show with the IWC putting on their replica belts and marching down to Stamford.

Something along the lines of "Freak pyrotechinics kills WWE lead announce team".

I remember reading on wikipedia that people kept giving JR food so they moved the desk.
