Randy Orton, the next... John Cena?

For the last few months, Randy Orton just hasn't been getting the huge pop that he used to.

First he's a heel, but people decided to cheer for him anyway, thus dictating for him the face turn that followed (much the same way Edge changed to a face).

Now, as a face, months later, he's just not getting that pop.

Tonight, he's in a match with CM Punk, and much like John Cena, he's getting cheered by what seems like to be the voices of CHILDREN and WOMEN, while CM Punk gets cheered by most of the male adults.

Is this just a case of CM Punk being very over with adult males or Randy Orton gettin the.. "we're sick of seeing you act like superman every week" John Cena treatment.

Thoughts/Comments?

Just watching raw now pisses me off because all the little kids and girls are cheering RKO and the men are screaming GTS.

I loved orton and now im starting to not like him because there bookin him as super cena. He needs to rework the gimmick and go back to being mean in a very mean way. True Heel.

I think it's because Randy Orton is doing exactly what "Super" Cena did, except he has no charisma. Honestly, if I see one more RKO "out of nowhere", I'll vomit. I miss the Legend Killer soooooo much.

The crowd reaction was normal for london. That's why they cheered Punk. I haven't seen thenm to that to Orton in the states.

i think men want to cheer for heels now because the heel is supposed to be bad ass, and men, well atleast me, like bad ass characters. the faces are more for woman and children. nice guys. they suck

The difference is you dont hear "Orton sucks" or a lot of boos like you do with Cena. Anyway Orton becoming more popular with the younger kids is probably what they were hoping for when he turned face.

Hopefully Punk doesn't get cheered too often because he is a perfect heel. Thats exactly how Orton turned face.

I was one of the men cheering for CM Punk, and you're right, it was pretty much limited to the men. The pop Orton got from the women was something else, but understandable. I'm sure there were plenty of women who just turned up for him.

I think Punk is the full(est) package at the moment and isn't being pushed anywhere near enough. As Zack Ryder would say, WWE are dropping the ball with him by keeping him in the Nexus and not giving him championship opportunities. The promo he did in Chicago(?) a few weeks back is my favourite non-Rock promo of the year thus far.

Randy Orton is just an utter bore. He's really angry all the time and does some stupid viper thing while looking extra angry, then speaks really angrily on the mic, then continues being angry as he walks out of the arena. What an awful gimmick.

Why does............... every thread on here have to have a bunch of ellipses to suggest that what you are asking us is super dramatic? It's super annoying.

ANYWAYS, no, I don't think Orton is the next Cena. He doesn't get booed like crazy like Cena does. Sure, a lot of the kids cheer for him, but so do the guys. Adult males just cheer for Punk cuz they appreciate the type of wrestler he is.

Also there was fake crowd noise since they did tape the show. If it was the legit feed I'm sure it would be louder.

But CM Punk is just that badass so they cheer him.

Also thought it was great how the cheers had british accents too.

Tonight's match between these honestly...no disrespect to Orton...went to CM Punk because I truly felt the emotion that was displayed from him... from the kicks out to the "what the hell do I have to do to this SOB" all the way to how he went from freaking out about a lost to calming down Ryan by simply pointing to the Nexus Band... CM Punk in my opinion is just damn good.... in these day and ages lol

P.S: if Chris Jericho returned and continued his heel personai would really love a fued between Jericho and Punk...very psychological!!!!!

thats just prefreance there. For cena it is lets go cena CENA sucks...

they just hate cena but for orton they dont say suck they sat GTS so they just like punk too but i have to say orton is getting immortal like cena... NOT every face needs to be a superhero...

Orton is not the next John Cena. He's still over with the guys. The reason it went down like that is because England and Canada have a long track record of cheering good heels. What made it worse was: Punk is going through what Orton did. He's such a badass heel, I think it's only a matter of time before he has to turn face too.

Also, Orton may not have been getting cheered as much, but he wasn't getting a mixed reaction of boos and cheers. Some people just decided to root for Punk instead of Orton.

Orton often gets the loudest pop of the night, so I have no clue what you're talking about with him "he's just not getting that pop."

It's lowered to be sure, but I don't think it has anything to do with the crowd being sick of him. He's just in a feud that's been carrying on too long.

its not like they were booing him. but punk is just a likeable charcter cause he's really good.
but i'm sick of everyone saying orton is the new cena. hey you notice even after orton hit the rko on punk he hobble up the ramp and still sold the beatdown he got while the complaints with cena is he takes the beaten goes hulk and the acts as if he was never hurt in the first place. orton and cena both have charisma but they are just different. orton's charisma has to be different or limited based on his character.

this is just what everyone on here does, support people when they are heel and then abandon them when they are face. everyone hated R-truth but he's already got people impressed cause he turned heel. or once someone becomes successful people get sick of them. no one cares that much about miz being champion anymore. the forums have become a waste of time. nothing satisfies you guys anymore.

ok i understand where ur coming from but the fact is randy is not getting booed like cena.Sure it did seemed like he was getting cheered more from women and kids than men but u got to understand that men cheer more heels especially if their great as cm punk.so i guess tonight in the uk there were alot of male cm punk fans,so what.Randy is not like superman like cena.

I think that part of the problem is that they messed up the Orton face turn. People were behind him as the sadistic and intellectual heel. They cheered his vicious streak, and enjoyed the fact that he was the "anti-face". However, the face turn really watered that down.

Instead of being ruthless, he is selectively mean. Instead of being the type of guy who will act on a whim to end anyone's career, he exhibits typical face tendencies. He should never, ever shake somebody's hand without it immediately being followed up by an RKO attempt. He should never do the "honourable" thing. He should never specifically target heels, and should be a threat to everyone. These are the things that got him a face reaction to begin with, not the slow talking, or pounding the mat like a moron before an RKO. He needs to be a face that is booked completely like a heel.

Actually, Orton does seem like he's becoming another Super Cena.. there's been a few times so far, including tonight.. where he was beat down, then all of a sudden bam, RKO.. similar to Cena, beat down at the end or after a match, then bam, AA out of nowhere.. they could have at least had Orton slip out of the ring, selling the beatdown before he was kicked in the head, instead of jumping up like nothing happened and hitting the RKO.. and I was a huge Orton fan for a long time, I'm just not liking him as much these days.. I miss the Legend Killer

and also, I'm a huge CM Punk fan, so him hitting the RKO out of nowhere after being beat down, annoyed me :)

or Randy Orton gettin the.. "we're sick of seeing you act like superman every week" John Cena treatment.

That's definitely why I'm starting to HATE Randy Orton. I can't stand it. After 7 months, not only could Cena NOT eliminate the Nexus.. but they came out even stronger (arguably) in the end with CM Punk as leader. Randy Orton? He just kills them one by one in a 4 week span.

After watching him beat Punk with one leg at Mania, I started to think about the possibility of Super Orton being a new force in the main event scene. But tonight was the final straw. After an exhausting match with Punk, getting jumped by Nexus, and being put down by Mason Ryan... Orton is still able to jump up, RKO CM Punk, and end the night with the last laugh. I yelled out, "Fuck this, he's Super Orton now" which has landed him in the same category as Cena, in my eyes anyways.

What really sucks is that he'll most likely get drafted to Smackdown and we'll be forced to deal with this unstoppable Justice League throughout the entire WWE.

i dont think it's Orton as it is that many wrestling fans like CM Punk. Orton is a good in ring performer, but his mic work isnt what you call great, but his moves are entertaining and his rko usually hits out of no where, but people like this heel Punk because he can both wrestle and speak and knows how to make a match worth watching. IF Orton got booed alot, then i would say yes to this, but he's not really booed often. Cena is.

he sold the beatdown aS HE WALKED UP THE RAMP. SORRY BOUT THE CAPS LOL
but he had like a good 5 minutes after the beatdown before the punt he would weak if he still couldnt fight back after that long. and how bout punk getting up right after the RKO. that was someone not selling. not saying i don't like punk but you're accusing orton of doing something he didn't really do wrong when punk made the rko look weak.

you know, i made this topic before watching Orton jump out, out of NOWHERE, and RKOing Punk.

after watching that go down, i was extremely disappointed with the end of RAW. I appreciate the fact that they gave Orton and Punk such a long segment, but another clean win over Punk...? Where are they going with this?

i read a bunch of posts where people claim that fans from England are very pro-heel. i was at Wrestlemania, CM Punk got a really solid reaction from the crowd. i read that someone said that Orton gets great pops.. over the past few months, Orton has not. That's a fact.

adults cheer for talent. adults cheer for passion. Orton, like Cena, displays the same moveset, the same characteristics on a weekly basis, the same old act. CM Punk does not.

i've always liked Punk, but he really won me over at Elimination Chamber. his mocking of Orton's 'pounding the ring, being a VIPER' routine, was hilarious. ever since then, he's come out and shown a passion, a uniqueness, something different.

sorry, Orton fans, but it's been the same old song and dance for a long time now, and i'm over it

over the past few months, Orton has not. That's a fact.

Actually, it's not a fact. Not at all. You're wrong, sorry to say.

His pops have been crazy since his face turn, and haven't quieted, at all. Did you watch the Royal Rumble? Elimination Chamber? Or any episode of Raw between the Rumble and..well, tonight? He's constantly getting the biggest pop on Raw, week in and week out.

Cena is still the face of the company, and that's not going to change. However, Orton is as over with the fans, right now, as he was last year around Extreme Rules. I'm not sure if you're just an Orton hater, or what the deal is, but his pops are fine.

Tonight, it was mixed. Half of the crowd for Punk, half for Orton. In London, this isn't new. This happens. It's a different crowd. But, it's not like Orton was getting booed. He wasn't.

Then again, if what you say is happening right now (which isn't really happening) actually starts to happen in the near future, I won't be unhappy about it. I like Orton more as a heel anyhow, and if the crowd wants to smark him back into being a bad guy, please, be my guest. But, that's not happening right now, and that's not what's been happening over the last several months.

you guys are predictable and dumb.

He gets that reaction because it's london, so they're smarky, plus Punk is awesome and is kind of the king of the smarks.

I've been to recent live shows. Orton gets a reaction from everyone. It's older women, like moms that cheer him. He gets my 21 year old gf all excited. If he gets boos, it's out of jealousy.

Orton is still more of a "badass" than the all american apple pie eating good guy Cena is. most men like him, all women like him, and children like him because he's a babyface. I have noticed no difference in the cheering except for tonight.

I think you are overreacting. He gets massive pops on his intro and anytime you think he could possibly hit an RKO. When he's getting lukewarm reactions in the south come and see me. You're forgetting the other side of the equation, CM Punk. Instead of saying "Orton is the next Cena" the title should be "CM Punk is amazing."

Anytime the fanbase "forces" a face turn by cheering a heel, the WWE immediately screws it up by changing this heel's cheer-able attributes (like Orton's viciousness against anyone, including other faces). Orton is no different, and time will show this. His pops will dwindle soon (The U.K. and a few other places are just a bit ahead in this regard), and so will his push . A shame really, as he could have worked as the anti-hero. Still prefer Legend Killer Randy, though.

hilarious. The same guys who want to keep a guy who gets cheers as a heel to stay a heel want Cena to turn heel. Basically it seems the IWC wants EVERYONE to be a ruthless, cussing, bloody bastards.

Ever think of this one, now stick with me, because this kind of out there, YOU ARE IN THE MINORITY, THE WWE DOES NOT CARE WHAT YOU THINK. The fact is, beyond London, he gets like 99% massive babyface pops and he IS vicious. Did he not kick Nexus' heads in?

this is more of the IWC jumping the gun and wanting a more brutal wrestler. It's a damn good thing you guys aren't employed by the WWE.

Orton isn't getting booed, I really don't see why people would Boo him when he's making the job squad 2.0 go away with punts, in fact, I think the punts to the Nexus members have had some of the best reactions we've had on free TV this year. Just to repeat a previous poster, punting people in the head is vicious.

CM Punk is a crowd jerker The fact is that he could beat Santa Clause to death with a wrench, and be cheered for it. Especially an international crowd, that's going to mark out for their favorite superstars, heel or face, more so than regular crowds do (I found myself booing my favorites at live shows for some reason).

Orton is in a good place, I think he makes a better heel, but he definitely sells merchandise, and I could see him someday usurping Cena, but right now, they're apples and oranges.
