Shipments of PS3s bound for the UK and the rest of Europe have been seized by customs following a preliminary injunction granted in favour of LG in a legal dispute against Sony. The Guardian have reported that tens of thousands of consoles have been confiscated for a period of at least 10-days following allegations of infringed used of LGs patents in the PS3 regarding Blu-Ray playback.
Sony are working to have the ban lifted as soon as possible. However, should LG apply to the patent office for an extension on the ban, it could lead to a shortage of the consoles on UK shelves in the coming months.
A Sony spokesman has said:
We are currently looking into this matter, and cannot make any comments at this point in time
If LG are successful in proving that Sony have infringed their patents, it could lead to compensation being paid for every PS3 which has been sold. This would likely cost Sony into the hundreds of millions.
